GB Test Lab is a free diagnostic ROM for the original Nintendo Game Boy DMG-01. Load it from a compatible flash cartridge to check system behavior, measure all eight buttons, inspect cartridge behavior, and run tests involving a link cable or Game Boy Printer. It can reveal faults that a visual test-pattern cartridge cannot—but it cannot read every part of the console, and some checks still require a person to look, listen, or connect additional hardware.
What GB Test Lab does
Created by Marcel Pflug for the Game Boy Museum, GB Test Lab runs tests on the Game Boy it is plugged into rather than launching a game. Its distinctive approach combines automatic checks and measurements with user-guided observations, then records results for that console. Hackaday describes its scope as including CPU, RAM, interrupts, button bounce, intermittent connectivity, link-cable communication, and Game Boy Printer use: Hackaday’s overview.

The project compares this broader diagnostic role with Nintendo’s DMG-AGING-01 test cartridge and the varied approaches taken by modern homebrew test cartridges. Many simpler tools show a pattern or play a tone for the user to judge. Pflug’s stated distinction is that visual patterns suit screen checks, while other subsystems benefit from measured, logged tests or explicit procedures.

What the tests check
System, memory, and cartridge checks
A quick check runs memory, cartridge-slot, interrupt, and system tests in sequence. Each reports PASSED, FAILED, or INCOMPLETE. The suite also examines memory areas and compares what a cartridge header claims with observed mapper, RAM, write-lock, and battery behavior. These checks can help distinguish a console-side issue from unexpected cartridge behavior, but a test result is evidence about the tested behavior, not a complete repair diagnosis.

Buttons and intermittent behavior
The ROM measures bounce behavior for all eight Game Boy buttons. Mechanical contacts may produce multiple transitions when pressed or released; measuring those transitions is more informative than simply lighting an on-screen button icon. The tool also checks for intermittent connectivity, which may not show up during a single quick press.
Link port and printer
With two DMG-01 consoles connected by a link cable, the suite compares serial timing and counts arriving clock edges. The Game Boy Museum describes a timing interval of about 3.5 seconds, endpoint uncertainty of about 15 microseconds, and estimated ratio precision of roughly four parts per million. Those are the project’s stated measurement characteristics, not a guarantee that every cable or console fault will be detected. The linked-console mode also includes a Pong demonstration.
If a Game Boy Printer is attached, it can print a six-page report with test verdicts, button-bounce figures, cartridge findings, decoding information, a dynamic QR-code page, and a page listing the suite’s limits. Its printer-dot check exercises 160 print-head heaters. These functions require the relevant physical hardware.

Sound, display, and extended operation
GB Test Lab includes sound tests, display patterns, and human-observation checks for contrast and viewing angle. It also has a burn-in run intended to stay operating for an extended period. The project contrasts a 20-minute run with leaving a repair test running for a weekend; choose a duration appropriate to the repair question and supervise the console as you would other powered electronics.
What you need to run it
The Game Boy Museum offers the ROM as a free download, a browser-based run option, and use on original hardware through a compatible flash cartridge. Its documentation names the EverDrive GB X7 as a flagship example of a suitable DMG-compatible flash cartridge. A flash cartridge with a working battery can preserve per-console logs after power is switched off. See the Game Boy Museum’s GB Test Lab page for the project’s download and access details.
- For console tests: an original DMG-01 and a compatible flash cartridge with the ROM loaded.
- For retained logs: a flash cartridge whose battery-backed save function works.
- For link tests: two DMG-01 consoles and a link cable.
- For printed reporting: a compatible Game Boy Printer and its connection hardware.
The public ROM download ZIP is listed as 1.82 MB by the Game Boy Museum in 2026. Project development began in September 2023; the changelog records button, sound, and memory features during 2023–2024, followed by burn-in, battery-backed logging, printer-dot checks, reporting, and other features before the first public version in September 2026: GB Test Lab changelog.

Browser emulation is not a hardware substitute
The browser version is useful for trying the ROM, but it cannot reproduce all physical measurements. In an emulator, a key changes in one cycle rather than bouncing mechanically, so button timing reads as a single edge and 00.00 milliseconds. A browser also has no physical link device or printer, so those screens cannot establish how a real cable, second console, or printer behaves.
Use real hardware when the question concerns electrical or mechanical behavior. Treat browser results as a view of how the software operates under emulation, not as a health certificate for a DMG-01.

GB Test Lab cannot directly test every component because the DMG-01 does not expose every signal to software:

- Battery condition: the console has no analog-to-digital converter, so the ROM cannot read battery voltage or assess battery health.
- Contrast and volume wheels: these are analog controls and are not connected to readable processor inputs. Use the visual and listening checks rather than expecting a numeric software result.
- Speaker, amplifier, and headphone socket: these sit beyond the last register software can reach. A sound test can guide a listening check, but software cannot independently verify the complete audio path.
- Displayed image and display hardware: the Game Boy cannot read back its own screen image. Dead pixels and ribbon-cable faults require human inspection of the display.
That limitation is why the suite pairs software measurements with explicit observation steps: some symptoms exist outside the console’s software-readable inputs.
How to interpret a result
A PASSED result means the tested check completed successfully under the conditions in which it ran; FAILED indicates that check found a problem; INCOMPLETE means it did not finish or could not establish a verdict. For a useful diagnosis, note which test failed, whether the result repeats, and whether it changes with a cartridge, cable, or peripheral. Do not infer that every subsystem is healthy from a passing quick check: analog controls, battery condition, audio output, and visible screen defects have separate limitations described above.
GB Test Lab is most useful when you want more than a static grid or tone: measured button behavior, automatic system and cartridge checks, saved per-console logs, and optional link or printer procedures. Its measurements make certain faults easier to investigate, while the tests that depend on human senses or external devices still call for those observations and accessories.
