Firefox 157.0 added Firefox Suggest address-bar suggestions in 16 European countries. To stop particular types from appearing, open Firefox Settings → Search, scroll to Address Bar — Firefox Suggest, and clear the checkboxes for the categories you don’t want. The rollout was first offered to Release-channel users on September 29, 2026, according to Mozilla’s Firefox 157.0 release notes.
What changed in Firefox 157
Mozilla’s release notes list Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland as new locations for Firefox Suggest address-bar suggestions. The notes say users can control the feature in Firefox Suggest settings.
The phrase “silently enables” describes how the change may have appeared to users; Mozilla’s release notes document the rollout and controls but do not say whether users saw a consent prompt or quantify how many people had suggestions enabled.
What Firefox Suggest can show
Firefox Suggest is built into the address bar and can provide different types of results as you type. Mozilla’s Firefox Suggest support article describes these categories:

#1 Best Overall
- Used Book in Good Condition
- Browsing history: pages saved locally on your computer.
- Bookmarks: pages you have bookmarked.
- Open tabs: pages already open in Firefox.
- Contextual suggestions: suggestions from the web.
- Sponsored suggestions: occasional sponsored results.
Which categories are available can depend on your Firefox version and region. Turning off one category does not require deleting the underlying history or bookmarks; use the category controls to choose what appears in address-bar results.
Turn off suggestions in Firefox Settings
- Open the Firefox menu and select Settings. Some systems label this page Preferences.
- Select Search in the left sidebar.
- Scroll to Address Bar — Firefox Suggest.
- Clear the checkbox beside each type of suggestion you do not want to see.
These controls change which types appear in address-bar results. Mozilla’s instructions for changing address-bar result settings note that labels and available controls vary by region; in the United States, for example, the section may include additional settings.
Choose narrower controls if needed
If you want to change a specific behavior beyond the visible checkboxes, Firefox has separate advanced preferences for suggestion categories. Mozilla documents these in its configuration editor reference:
| Preference | Controls |
|---|---|
browser.urlbar.suggest.bookmark |
Bookmark suggestions |
browser.urlbar.suggest.history |
History suggestions |
browser.urlbar.suggest.openpage |
Suggestions for open tabs |
browser.urlbar.suggest.searches |
Search suggestions in the address bar |
browser.urlbar.suggest.quicksuggest.enabled |
Firefox Suggest |
browser.urlbar.suggest.quicksuggest.sponsored |
Sponsored Firefox Suggest results |
browser.search.suggest.enabled |
Global search suggestions; Mozilla says this is also exposed in Search Preferences |
These are advanced settings. Prefer the Search settings page unless you understand the effect of changing individual preferences; changing the wrong preference can affect a different category of results than intended.

When Firefox is managed by an organization
On an enterprise-managed computer, an administrator can use Mozilla’s SearchSuggestEnabled policy. Setting the policy to false hides search suggestions and locks the setting. It covers suggestions in both the address bar and the separate search bar, and affects browser.urlbar.suggest.searches and browser.search.suggest.enabled. If a setting is locked, contact the organization’s administrator rather than trying to override it locally.
