Those features may make it a worthwhile upgrade for some S70 owners, but Garmin’s announcement does not establish that the S72 improves golf accuracy, battery performance, or scores. If your S70 already covers your golf needs, compare the actual prices and decide whether the S72’s additions are worth the difference.
What’s new on the Garmin Approach S72?
Garmin announced the Approach S72 on October 6, 2026. Its U.S. launch announcement describes 43mm and 47mm models with AMOLED displays, a titanium bezel, a sapphire lens, and a ComfortFit fabric band. Garmin said U.S. suggested retail prices start at $799.99 and that the watches are available now; those details are specific to the U.S. announcement, not a guarantee of local pricing or retailer stock elsewhere. Golf features
- On-wrist swing metrics: Garmin highlights hand speed, backswing length, and wrist rotation.
- Round review with biometric data: The watch can show golf-round information alongside data such as heart-rate trends.
- Practice and putting tools: Garmin lists driving-range activity logging and putting analytics in the Garmin Golf app.
- Green reading: Contour-based green reading is available on select courses and requires an active Garmin Golf Membership, according to Garmin.
Everyday features and battery claims
The S72 announcement also lists a speaker and microphone for calls and basic voice tasks, plus a built-in flashlight with variable white and red light. Garmin rates the larger S72 for up to 20 hours on-course and up to 16 days in smartwatch mode with GPS off. These are manufacturer specifications; Garmin’s announcement does not provide a direct S70-versus-S72 battery test.
What the S70 already does
Garmin places the Approach S70 in its premium GPS golf smartwatch category. Its golfer comparison listing includes full CourseView mapping, PlaysLike Distance, Touch Targeting, Virtual Caddie, green contours, heart rate, sleep score, built-in sports apps, and Garmin Pay. For an S70 owner who mainly wants course maps, distances, and Garmin’s established premium golf-watch features, the S70 already covers a substantial set of functions. Garmin golfer watch comparison

Size and display specifications
Garmin’s Connect IQ compatible-device listing gives the following display resolutions. Resolution is a specification, not proof of better brightness, clarity, or outdoor readability.
| Model | Case size | Display resolution |
|---|---|---|
| Approach S70 | 42mm | 390 × 390 |
| Approach S70 | 47mm | 454 × 454 |
| Approach S72 | 43mm | 416 × 416 |
| Approach S72 | 47mm | 454 × 454 |
Source: Garmin Connect IQ compatible devices. The S72’s 47mm resolution matches the S70’s 47mm listing; the 43mm S72 listing has more pixels than the 42mm S70 listing, but the one-millimeter size difference and resolution alone do not establish a visible improvement.

Should you upgrade from the S70?
The S72 is most compelling if you will use specific additions rather than simply wanting a newer model. Consider how each one fits your routine:
- You want swing feedback on your wrist: The S72’s hand-speed, backswing-length, and wrist-rotation metrics are a clear reason to consider it if those measurements matter to your practice.
- You want golf and biometric information together: The round review with heart-rate trends may be useful if you want that post-round context.
- You play a supported course and value green reading: Check course coverage and account for the active Garmin Golf Membership requirement before treating this as a reason to switch.
- You would use the watch away from the course: Calls or basic voice tasks through the speaker and microphone, and the built-in flashlight, could add everyday value.
- You are choosing a size: Compare the 43mm and 47mm S72 options with the S70 sizes on your wrist; published resolution figures cannot replace a fit or readability check.
- You are weighing the cost: Garmin’s U.S. launch price starts at $799.99 for the S72. A current S70 street price and a live price gap are not established here, so compare the prices available in your market when you buy.
Garmin’s announcement is a feature-based launch comparison, not an independent comparative test. It does not establish that the S72 improves GPS or sensor accuracy, extends battery life relative to the S70, or helps golfers lower scores. If the S70’s existing golf functions meet your needs and the new features do not justify the price difference, there is no demonstrated need to upgrade based on the announcement alone.
