The Garmin Approach S12 is a lightweight GPS golf watch for players who want on-course distances and basic scoring without a touchscreen or a complicated feature set. Its main tradeoffs are a small monochrome display and manual shot logging: it does not automatically identify each shot or club on its own.
Is the Garmin Approach S12 worth it?
It can be a sensible fit if your priorities are clear yardages, a readable display in sunlight, simple physical controls, and scorekeeping. Garmin lists the watch at 34.1 g, and Golf Monthly’s 2026 roundup describes it as easy to get started with and highlights its Big Numbers mode.

The S12 is less compelling if you want detailed color maps, automatic shot tracking without accessories, or broad everyday smartwatch and health features. Golf Monthly’s 2026 roundup identifies those as areas where the watch gives ground to more advanced options; TechRadar’s 2026 guide likewise notes that its monochrome screen can make maps harder to interpret.

What golf features does the S12 provide?
On the course, the S12 supplies yardage to the front, middle, and back of the green, along with distances to layups, doglegs, hazards, and other course targets. Green View lets you adjust the pin position manually. Garmin also lists scorekeeping, statistics for strokes, putts, greens, and fairways, plus a round timer and odometer. The product page states that the unit is tournament legal.

Garmin’s current product page advertises more than 43,000 preloaded CourseView maps. The owner’s manual and two 2026 buying guides state 42,000. These are differing figures across product information and guide versions, not an independently audited count of the current database.
Does the Garmin S12 track shots automatically?
No. The S12’s built-in shot-distance function is manual: you record a shot rather than relying on the watch to identify each shot and club automatically. Garmin says a full set of Approach CT10 sensors can add club tracking. The sensors are optional and sold separately; they are not needed for the watch’s basic yardages or scorekeeping.

How accurate is the Garmin Approach S12?
TechRadar’s 2026 golf-watch guide describes the S12’s GPS as accurate based on its testing, but that is the publication’s assessment, not a universal accuracy measurement. There is no standardized accuracy figure established here, so course conditions, satellite reception, and the individual round matter more than a single numerical promise.
For a reliable GPS fix, Garmin’s manual recommends using the watch with a clear view of the sky. It says initial GPS acquisition may take 30–60 seconds in open sky. Garmin also recommends syncing regularly with a Garmin account to download satellite data that can help acquisition.

How long does the battery last?
Garmin’s Approach S12 Owner’s Manual (2021) rates battery life at up to 30 hours while playing golf and up to 10 weeks in watch-only mode. These are manufacturer maxima, not guaranteed results. Garmin says actual life depends on GPS use and that extreme cold reduces battery life.
Does the Garmin Approach S12 need a phone?
No phone is required for the watch’s core on-course yardages and scorekeeping. Garmin lists Bluetooth Smart connectivity and compatibility with iPhone and Android. Pairing with the Garmin Golf app adds scorecard syncing, course updates, live scoring, and software updates.

Garmin’s product page also lists green contour data as a membership-dependent feature available on select courses. It is not the same as the standard green distances and manually adjustable pin position.

The S12 has a 0.9-inch (23 × 23 mm), 176 × 176-pixel sunlight-visible transflective MIP display. It is monochrome, not a color map screen. TechRadar’s 2026 guide notes the screen’s sunlight readability as a strength but says maps can be harder to interpret on it. Big Numbers mode makes the key yardages easier to read at a glance.

Garmin lists a 43.7 × 43.7 × 11.5 mm case, 34.1 g weight, silicone strap, rechargeable built-in lithium-ion battery, and proprietary plug charger. The physical-button approach keeps the interface straightforward, though it does not offer the richer visual interaction of a touchscreen display.

The useful distinction is not simply basic versus premium; it is whether you want the S12’s focused yardage workflow or more visual and automated tools. Setup, course updates, and care
- Set up the watch: Turn it on, choose your language and units, and pair a smartphone if you want Garmin Golf features. Garmin recommends fully charging it before a round.
- Allow GPS to acquire: Stand in open sky and allow time for the initial fix; Garmin’s manual gives 30–60 seconds as a typical acquisition window.
- Sync regularly: Connecting to a Garmin account can download satellite data that may help GPS acquisition, as well as deliver course and software updates.
- Recover missing course data: If a course update is interrupted and nearby courses are missing, Garmin’s manual recommends running the course update again, including through Garmin Express.
- Rinse and dry after exposure: Garmin recommends thorough freshwater rinsing after contact with chlorine, salt water, sunscreen, cosmetics, alcohol, or similar substances. Let the watch dry fully before charging; moisture or sweat on the contacts can cause corrosion.
- Store it sensibly: Garmin recommends charging the watch to at least 50% before storing it for several months.
Is the S12 waterproof?
Garmin rates the watch at 5 ATM. Its Approach S12 Owner’s Manual says, “The device withstands pressure equivalent to a depth of 50 m,” but also advises against pressing the keys underwater. The rating should not be read as permission to operate the buttons underwater.
