No. The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is water-resistant, not waterproof in every situation. Samsung rates it IP68 based on a laboratory test in still fresh water up to 1.5 meters deep for up to 30 minutes. That limit does not make deliberate swimming, underwater photography, or exposure to salt water and pool water safe.
What does the S23 Ultra’s IP68 rating mean?
IP68 is a standardized ingress-protection rating, not a promise that a phone will survive any encounter with water. Samsung’s product specifications describe the S23 Ultra as water-resistant in up to 1.5 meters of fresh water for up to 30 minutes, under laboratory test conditions. Samsung Canada clarifies that its IPX8 test involves still water and that the device is left without movement. The rating also indicates dust protection.

Those conditions are boundaries for a test, not recommended operating conditions or a guarantee for every real-world incident. Depth, time, water movement, pressure, and the phone’s condition all matter. Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra specifications and water-resistance guidance document the limits.

Samsung advises against using the phone at the beach or in a pool. Swimming and underwater photography add movement and may expose the device to water pressure beyond the still-water lab test. Salt water and chlorinated pool water are also not the fresh water specified in the rating.

- Multi-layer defense: solid inner shell and soft outer cover (No Built in Screen Protector)

Samsung’s support guidance also warns against deeper or longer immersion and high-pressure water. It advises avoiding soapy water, oils, perfumes, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, cosmetics, and liquids containing alcohol. Do not treat the IP68 label as protection against these substances.
What should you do if the phone gets wet?
For incidental wetting, Samsung’s product page says to rinse residue off and dry the phone. That advice does not guarantee that a device will avoid damage, particularly after exposure to a liquid other than fresh water.

- After contact with salt water, pool water, or another residue-bearing liquid, follow Samsung’s rinse-and-dry guidance rather than assuming the IP rating covers it.
- Avoid further immersion, jets, and high-pressure water.
- If the phone was submerged beyond the stated depth or duration, or behaves abnormally after getting wet, consult Samsung support for guidance.
Does water resistance last forever?
No. Samsung says water resistance can diminish over time, and its support guidance cautions that it may weaken through wear. A used, damaged, or repaired S23 Ultra should not be assumed to retain the protection of a new device tested in a lab.

Is water damage covered by warranty?
In a Galaxy S23 Ultra feature, Samsung’s Global Newsroom states: “Water or dust damage is not covered by warranty.” Warranty terms can vary by market, so check the terms that apply where you bought the phone rather than treating that statement as a complete warranty ruling for every country. Samsung’s article also describes an Arctic river plunge, but one feature story is not a substitute for the stated test limits or a guarantee of survival in similar conditions: Samsung Global Newsroom’s Arctic river feature.

How to protect the phone near a pool or beach
If you expect to use the S23 Ultra near a pool or saltwater, consider a waterproof case compatible with the S23 Ultra. A case does not change the phone’s IP rating, and its protection depends on the specific model. Before relying on one, check its manufacturer’s instructions for compatibility, permitted depth and duration, port and button coverage, and any stated testing or warranty. No particular case model is established here as suitable for a given depth or activity.
