There is no universal weekly or monthly cleaning schedule for garbage disposals in the manufacturer guidance reviewed. How often should you clean a garbage disposal?
Use the instructions for your specific model rather than following an arbitrary calendar schedule. Moen says its disposals scour internal parts during use, while InSinkErator describes its disposers as maintenance-free and recommends regular use. Neither source sets a universal cleaning interval. Moen’s cleaning guidance and InSinkErator’s support FAQ are product-specific, not rules for every disposal.

In routine use, run cold water while grinding and continue for several seconds afterward. When odor or visible residue points to buildup, inspect and clean only the accessible parts your manual allows you to remove. Food can collect under the sink baffle as well as in the grind chamber, according to InSinkErator’s user manual.

- Switch off the disposal. Keep hands out of the grinding chamber at all times.
- Check your manual before removing the baffle. Remove it only if the instructions for your model permit it.
- Scrub the underside of the baffle. Use a scouring pad or small scrub brush to remove residue. A brush is for the removable baffle, not for inserting into the grinding chamber.
- Reinstall the baffle as directed for your model.
- Rinse with cold water. Run the disposal with a medium stream of cold water, following the manufacturer’s directions.
These steps reflect the procedure in InSinkErator’s cleaning FAQ. If your baffle is not meant to be removed, do not force it; follow the manual’s directions for accessible cleaning instead.

What to do about disposal odors
InSinkErator says odor is usually a sign of food buildup and identifies the underside of the sink baffle as a place to check. Clean that accessible area first if your model permits. Ice cubes with lemon or lime wedges are another freshening suggestion from the manufacturer, but they are not a substitute for scrubbing residue from the baffle and are not established as a fix for a plumbing or drain problem.
InSinkErator also mentions baking soda for freshening. These suggestions should not be treated as proof that citrus or baking soda disinfects the disposal. If odor persists after cleaning, consult the appliance manual or a plumbing professional rather than assuming the disposal is the source.

What not to put in the disposal while cleaning
- Keep hands and fingers out. InSinkErator’s manual warns against putting them inside the unit.
- Do not use bleach or chemical drain openers in the disposal. The manual also advises against other drain-cleaning products.
- Use cold water during grinding and keep it running for several seconds after grinding, as the manual directs.
If the unit is jammed or an object is lodged inside, do not reach into the chamber. The manual gives separate troubleshooting directions, including switching power off and using an appropriate long-handled tool; follow the instructions for your model.

The U.S. EPA advises septic-system owners to limit garbage-disposal use because food waste adds solids to the tank and can affect pumping needs. This is guidance about disposal use and septic maintenance, not a special cleaning schedule for the appliance.
