Adaptive cruise control (ACC) adjusts a vehicle’s speed to maintain a preset following distance from a vehicle detected ahead. It can accelerate and brake, but it does not make the car self-driving: the driver must keep watching the road and be ready to take control.
How adaptive cruise control works
The driver switches on cruise control, sets a target speed, and—if the vehicle offers the option—chooses a following-distance setting. A forward-facing sensing system looks for a vehicle ahead. If that vehicle is slower or closer than the selected gap allows, ACC can reduce the car’s speed. When the way ahead clears, the car can accelerate toward the set speed again. Toyota describes its system as actively controlling distance to the vehicle ahead through automatic acceleration and deceleration (Toyota operating overview); Ford likewise describes slowing to match traffic and resuming the set speed when traffic clears (Ford Driver Assist Features).

The exact behavior depends on the vehicle and model year. Some systems support stop-and-go traffic; others may disengage or prompt the driver to act at low speeds. Speed ranges, distance settings, and controls are not universal, so check the owner’s manual for the specific car.

What ACC does—and does not—control
ACC controls the vehicle’s speed by managing acceleration and, on systems designed for it, braking. It does not by itself steer the car or keep it centered in a lane. NHTSA classifies ACC as an example of Level 1 driver assistance, which provides support with either steering or acceleration and braking; lane-centering assistance is listed separately. A system that combines speed and steering support may be Level 2, but the driver still has to monitor the road and remain responsible (NHTSA: Driver Assistance Technologies).

ACC is not a collision-prevention guarantee. Toyota’s 2025 Highlander manual says its dynamic radar cruise control does not include functions to prevent or avoid collisions with vehicles ahead, and instructs the driver to take direct control when danger may arise (2025 Highlander owner’s manual). Treat ACC as assistance with speed and spacing, not as a substitute for steering, judgment, or braking when needed.
When to use it, and its limits
Use ACC only under the conditions allowed by the vehicle’s manual. Some systems are intended primarily for highway driving, and conditions that obscure or obstruct sensors can affect operation. Toyota cautions that its system is not an aid for poor-visibility conditions and that the driver must continue assessing danger (2025 Highlander owner’s manual).

Limits differ between vehicles. For example, a Volkswagen technical service document revised in March 2019 says one ACC implementation can become temporarily unavailable when the sensor view is limited by dirt or inclement weather, including heavy rain, snowfall, or ice (Volkswagen technical service document hosted by NHTSA). That example should not be treated as a universal list of limitations.
A 2019 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid manual also cautions that detection and distance control may not function correctly in some conditions and tells drivers to choose a speed appropriate to the speed limit, traffic, road, and weather (2019 RAV4 Hybrid owner’s manual). Even when ACC is working normally, the driver remains responsible for choosing a safe speed and gap.

What to check in your vehicle’s manual
- Which controls activate ACC and set the target speed or following gap.
- Whether the system works in stop-and-go traffic and what it does at low speeds.
- What warnings or prompts require you to brake or take control.
- Which road, visibility, and sensor conditions can limit or suspend operation.
- Whether a separate lane-centering feature is available and how it operates alongside ACC.
Manufacturers use different names and configurations for these features. Toyota’s safety information, for example, notes variation among systems and highway-oriented use (Toyota Safety Hub); the vehicle’s own manual is the relevant guide to its actual capabilities.
