Yes—sticking with one main gaming platform can work well alongside choosing subscriptions or individual purchases game by game. Keep a home platform for its friends, account history, convenience, or services, then compare the actual cost, availability, and access terms for each game elsewhere. The combination only works when the particular game, device, entitlement, and service support it.
What platform loyalty does—and does not—mean
A main platform can be valuable even if it is not where you access every game. Your friends may be there, your account may hold years of progress or purchases, or its interface and services may suit you. Loyalty need not mean buying every title from that platform’s store; it can simply mean treating it as your default.

But a purchase on one console storefront generally should not be assumed to work on another console. In a 2023 proceeding, New Zealand’s Commerce Commission described the Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo console storefronts as console-specific, in contrast to the wider range of PC game distribution options. That is the regulator’s description in that proceeding, not a guarantee about every current game or product. Check the exact edition and store before buying. When a subscription makes sense—and when a purchase may be better
A subscription is most useful when you expect to play several included games during the membership period and value variety over keeping access to one particular title. The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s March 2025 report says subscription models may appeal to regular players who prefer variety over buying individual games they are particularly interested in. A subscription can also help you try games you might not otherwise purchase.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.
- Redemption: Online
Buying a game individually can fit better when you want a specific title that is not in a catalog, expect to play it for a long time, or prefer not to depend on an active membership. A buy-to-play purchase may provide access to a game unavailable through a subscription, as the New Zealand Commerce Commission’s 2023 regulatory material notes. Compare the cost over the time you actually expect to play—not just the first month or the sticker price. Subscription access is conditional
Catalog availability is not the same as ownership. Sony says some PlayStation Plus Game Catalog and Classics Catalog titles have end dates, and access to catalog games lasts while you remain an active member. Its US page describes three membership options with varying benefits; prices, terms, and availability can differ by region and plan. Check the current page for your market and the title’s listing before subscribing. PlayStation Plus (US)

Platform-specific terms also matter. EA says its membership selection applies to one platform, so do not assume an EA Play membership on one device carries over to another. Review the current FAQ for the platform you use. EA Play FAQ

- Redeem for anything on PlayStationStore: games, add-ons, PlayStationPlus and more.
- Everything you want to play. Choose from the largest library of PlayStation content.
- Use gift card funds to contribute towards PlayStationPlus memberships.
- Cross-buy means one qualifying purchase grants access to supported versions on more than one device. Microsoft’s Xbox Play Anywhere program describes a single purchase of an eligible game from an Xbox online store as providing access to both its console and PC versions. Eligibility and implementation conditions apply; this is not a general promise that any Xbox purchase works on PC. Xbox Play Anywhere
- Cross-progression means game progress can carry between supported devices or platforms. It depends on the game’s compatible save and account support, not simply on owning the game twice or using the same storefront account.
- Cross-play means players on different devices can play together. By itself, it does not transfer a purchase or saved progress.
Before paying for a second copy, check the game’s own support information for the specific features and platforms you need. The ACCC report discusses how games and platforms may support play across devices, but compatibility remains game- and service-dependent. ACCC report
What to check before choosing where to play a game
- Confirm the exact game and edition. Check whether it is sold on your preferred platform, included in a subscription catalog, or eligible for a cross-buy program. Do not assume editions share entitlements.
- Work out the cost for your expected play period. Compare the purchase price with the membership cost over the months you are likely to play. Include whether you already subscribe and whether you would keep the membership for other games.
- Check catalog terms and membership requirements. Look for removal or end dates, active-membership conditions, plan tiers, regional availability, and any multiplayer requirements relevant to your use.
- Check your people and your setup. Your friends’ platform, your available hardware, and where you want to play may matter more than the store price. Confirm that the game supports the multiplayer features you expect.
- Verify cross-device features separately. Look for explicit support for cross-buy, cross-progression, and cross-play for the exact title. Treat each as a separate capability.
- Decide what kind of access you want. A subscription trades ongoing membership for access to a changing or conditional catalog; an individual purchase avoids that membership condition but remains tied to its supported platform and entitlement terms.
Can an Xbox disc also provide a digital version?
Microsoft announced on August 26, 2026, that supported Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games can be used to claim digital entitlements. The feature is limited: Microsoft says not every title is available at launch, so it does not apply to every disc, game, or platform. Confirm that the specific title qualifies before relying on a disc for digital access. Microsoft’s Xbox Wire announcement

A practical way to balance a home platform with flexible buying
Keep your main platform where your social and account benefits are strongest. For each new game, compare the purchase and subscription options that actually include it, then check how long access lasts and whether your preferred devices and multiplayer setup are supported. Use a cross-buy entitlement only when the program explicitly covers the title, and verify progress transfer separately. This avoids treating platform loyalty as an all-or-nothing buying rule.
