Start by gathering nearby materials, making basic tools, and building a small shelter you can use for crafting, storage, rest, and a dependable return point. Then eat for the health and stamina your next activity needs, explore the biome around you, and prepare before pushing into unfamiliar danger. Valheim’s early loop is about learning one area at a time—not following a mandatory build or speedrun route.
What should you do in your first session?
Valheim combines resource gathering, crafting, building, exploration, environmental survival, and combat in a procedurally generated world. A useful first-session rhythm is to collect what is close, make simple equipment, establish a base, and take short trips outward. Iron Gate’s official overview describes these systems and the game’s biome-based progression.

Begin with materials you can reach safely. Use what you find to craft basic tools and equipment, then let those tools help you gather and build more efficiently. You do not need to clear a large area or chase distant resources before you have a safe place to return to.
Build a functional shelter
Make a modest shelter that serves a purpose: a place to work with crafting, keep useful materials together, rest, and orient your trips around. Prioritize function over size or decoration. Expand it as your needs become clearer rather than spending your first session trying to construct a finished base.
#1 Best Overall
Take short trips from a reliable home point
Once you have a base, explore outward in manageable loops. Bring back materials you recognize, pay attention to what the area contains, and avoid turning an early scouting trip into a long expedition with no clear way home. This gives you room to learn the local terrain and threats without making every mistake costly.
How does food affect survival?
Food is not a hunger countdown. Iron Gate Studio’s FAQ puts it plainly: “Eating food is not vital for survival in Valheim, but your total health and stamina depends on it.” In practice, eating changes your available health and stamina, so food is preparation for the task ahead rather than a box to tick once and forget.
Eat for the activity you are about to do
- Exploring: Eat before a longer trip so you have more capacity for movement and unexpected encounters.
- Building or gathering: Choose food that supports the amount of work and travel you expect, instead of setting out with no buffer.
- Combat: Eat before engaging a dangerous enemy or attempting a boss. More available health and stamina can make room for blocks, dodges, and recovery.
There is no single food combination that every new player must use. Recipes and balance can change between updates, so learn what is available in your current build and use food that suits your immediate plan. The official Valheim FAQ explains the relationship between food, health, and stamina.
How do you progress without spoilers?
Treat your current biome as both a learning area and a progression stage. Each biome has its own resources and level of difficulty. Learn what you can safely gather there, notice which dangers are beyond your current preparation, and use the biome’s Forsaken boss as the broad progression gate. Defeating that area’s boss and using what you gain helps open the way forward.
Learn the area before trying to conquer it
- Explore the nearby terrain and identify safe routes back to your shelter.
- Gather resources that are accessible with your current equipment.
- Notice when an enemy or environment signals that you should prepare more before returning.
- Build up equipment, food, and familiarity with combat before taking on the local boss.
Valheim’s combat includes blocking and dodging, and the environment matters as much as the enemy. Practice those basics in manageable encounters before treating a boss attempt as a test of raw damage. You do not need a complete boss-by-boss walkthrough to understand the early goal: become capable in the biome you are in, then take on its progression challenge.
Should you play alone, host friends, or use a dedicated server?
Choose a world setup based on when your group plays and how much configuration you want to handle. Official Valheim materials describe solo play and multiplayer for up to ten players. A player-hosted session and a dedicated server are different: the first depends on the host being active, while a dedicated server can keep a world available for friends to join at other times.
| World setup | When it fits | Availability | Setup burden |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo or local play | You want to learn at your own pace or play when convenient. | Your world is available when you are playing it. | Lowest; no server configuration is needed. |
| Player-hosted multiplayer | Your group usually plays together at the same time. | Friends depend on the player-host being active. | Simple compared with running a dedicated server. |
| Dedicated server | Your group wants a persistent world that can be joined while the usual host is away. | The world can remain available independently of a player-hosted session. | Self-hosting can involve configuration, scripting, and router setup; managed hosting is an optional paid convenience. |
Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide covers self-hosting and configuration. Renting a server is not a requirement for multiplayer; consider a managed option only if persistent availability matters enough to justify its cost and administration trade-offs.

Roaming too far while carrying everything
Long trips make it harder to respond to danger and easier to lose track of your route. Keep early explorations short, return to store useful materials, and avoid taking every valuable item with you when you do not need it.
Entering a harder biome before you are ready
A new area may offer tempting resources, but its difficulty can exceed what your current equipment and food support. If you are repeatedly overwhelmed, return to a familiar area, improve your preparation, and approach the new biome deliberately.

Treating one route as mandatory
Valheim worlds are procedurally generated, and players do not have to follow one exact base design, food set, or travel sequence. Use the progression structure as a guide, but adapt your choices to the resources nearby and the way you prefer to play.
A spoiler-light checklist for your next session
- Gather accessible materials and make basic tools.
- Set up a small shelter for crafting, storage, and rest.
- Eat with your next trip or fight in mind.
- Explore your current biome in short, deliberate trips.
- Prepare for that biome’s Forsaken boss before attempting it.
- Choose a multiplayer setup based on whether friends need the world available when the host is away.
