Start with a dedicated low-latency USB connection, then check microphone design, console compatibility, battery rating and fit. On that basis, the five most useful alternatives are SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds, Sony INZONE Buds, JBL Quantum TWS, Razer Hammerhead Pro HyperSpeed True Wireless and EPOS GTW 270 Hybrid.
The best choice depends on your platform and session length. SteelSeries is the strongest current shortlist candidate according to RTINGS’ 2026 roundup; Sony is the most feature-heavy option; JBL has the clearest documented microphone hardware; Razer is aimed at players who want a performance-focused wireless model; and EPOS remains interesting for short sessions if you can verify stock and support.

What an earbud must do to replace a gaming headset
A headset replacement has to keep audio delay low enough for gunshots, rhythm cues and directional effects to arrive when the action happens. It also needs a microphone that survives voice chat, a connection that works with your console or PC, enough battery for a normal session and a reliable seal in your ears.
Latency comes before soundstage
A dedicated 2.4 GHz USB transceiver is the safest connection for competitive and rhythm-sensitive games. It sends audio through a purpose-built wireless link rather than relying on a general Bluetooth profile. Bluetooth can be perfectly usable for music and slower games, but gaming modes differ by product and device. RTINGS specifically warns that the Bluetooth-only Hammerhead True Wireless Pro can be too latent for many games; that is a different generation from the Hammerhead Pro HyperSpeed model listed below.

Microphone quality is a hardware and placement problem
Earbuds do not put a boom microphone beside your mouth, so beamforming, noise rejection and the physical position of the microphones matter. JBL documents six microphones with integrated beamforming on Quantum TWS. Sony advertises an AI-assisted microphone on INZONE Buds. Those are manufacturer specifications, not an independent ranking of call quality, so treat them as evidence of design rather than a guarantee that every voice will sound better.
Platform support is not interchangeable
USB-C dongles are convenient on a modern PC, phone or handheld, but console support depends on the console, the port and the exact package. The Arctis GameBuds family has separate PlayStation and Xbox versions, and those SKUs should be treated as different products. Sony and JBL document USB-C connection methods, but regional packages can differ. Confirm the target platform before buying rather than assuming that a dongle will work everywhere.
Fit determines isolation and comfort
An earbud can have excellent electronics and still fail if its tips do not seal your ears. Seal affects bass, outside-noise reduction and how loudly you need to play. Ear shape and tip preference are personal; the available testing does not establish a universal comfort winner. If possible, buy from a seller with a practical return policy and test each tip size before a long session.

1. SteelSeries Arctis GameBuds: the current all-round shortlist leader
RTINGS’ 2026 roundup replaced the Razer Hammerhead Pro HyperSpeed with Arctis GameBuds as its top pick and checked the selections for current validity and stock. That makes GameBuds the most defensible starting point when you want one pair to cover everyday gaming rather than a narrowly defined use case.
Rank #2
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
The critical buying detail is the platform SKU. PlayStation and Xbox versions are not interchangeable labels; choose the version intended for your console and still confirm the included transmitter and supported devices on the retailer’s listing. If you play on PC, check whether the console-specific package also meets your USB and audio-routing needs.
GameBuds are a sensible choice when you value a current product line and broad gaming focus more than a published specification sheet. Because the cited material does not establish a battery figure or microphone ranking, do not buy them on an assumed endurance or voice-quality advantage. Treat RTINGS’ current recommendation and the verified compatibility of your SKU as the reasons to shortlist them.
2. Sony INZONE Buds: the feature-rich option for immersive solo play
Sony’s INZONE Buds combine an 8.4 mm driver with active noise cancellation, personalized spatial sound and a USB-C dongle designed for low-latency operation. The personalization feature is intended to tailor spatial processing to the listener, while noise cancellation can reduce steady external sound during a single-player campaign or a noisy commute.

Sony advertises an AI-assisted microphone, which is useful evidence that voice pickup was designed for gaming rather than treated as an afterthought. It is still a manufacturer claim, not an independent microphone test, so players whose team communication is critical should try a voice recording or return the product if the pickup does not suit their voice.

The rated endurance in the comparison table is a major reason to consider INZONE Buds for long sessions. Remember that “up to” figures depend on volume, radio mode, processing features and other settings; they are not a standardized real-world test. Use the USB-C dongle for gaming and reserve ordinary Bluetooth for devices or activities where delay is less important.
3. JBL Quantum TWS: the clearest documented microphone design
Quantum TWS gives you two connection paths: Bluetooth for general use and a low-latency 2.4 GHz link through the included USB-C dongle for gaming. That split is practical if the same earbuds need to move between a game system and a phone, provided both devices can use the relevant connection.
JBL’s six-microphone beamforming specification is the most explicit microphone hardware description in this group. Beamforming uses multiple microphones to emphasize the speaker’s voice and reduce sound arriving from other directions. It can help, but room reflections, keyboard noise, wind and the earbud’s fit still determine the final result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe battery rating combines an eight-hour earbud figure with 16 additional hours supplied by the case. Those are rated capacities, not a controlled endurance result across identical volume and radio settings. Quantum TWS is therefore a strong candidate when voice chat and connection flexibility matter, as long as the USB-C dongle is compatible with the platform you intend to use.

4. Razer Hammerhead Pro HyperSpeed True Wireless: performance-focused, but avoid the generation mix-up
RTINGS’ wireless-gaming comparison rates the Hammerhead Pro HyperSpeed model ahead of Sony INZONE Buds. That result applies to the Pro HyperSpeed generation only. The standard Hammerhead True Wireless Pro is a separate Bluetooth-only product, and RTINGS warns that its latency can be too high for many games.
This distinction matters when shopping because product names are similar and older listings can remain visible. Confirm that the listing says “Pro HyperSpeed” and that it includes the expected gaming transmitter or connection hardware. Do not infer the performance of one generation from reviews of the other.
The cited material does not establish a battery figure or independent microphone ranking for the Pro HyperSpeed. Choose it because of the comparative wireless-gaming result and your confidence in its compatibility, not because of an assumed endurance advantage. Players who mostly use Bluetooth on a phone should also recognize that the gaming comparison is not the same as a promise of identical performance in every mode.
5. EPOS GTW 270 Hybrid: a short-session specialist with useful EQ
RTINGS describes the GTW 270 Hybrid as one of the better-tested wireless gaming earbuds for short sessions. Its bass-rich tuning can add weight to explosions and music, while the companion app provides EQ adjustment when the default balance is too warm or masks detail.

That sound profile is a preference, not a universal benefit. Bass-heavy earbuds may be enjoyable for action games but can make subtle footsteps or spoken dialogue less prominent until you adjust the equalizer. Use the app to create a profile for competitive play if the software and your platform support that workflow.
The GTW 270 Hybrid is older than the other products in this shortlist. Before paying, confirm that the seller has current stock, that the warranty applies in your region and that the connection method works with your console, PC or handheld. It makes most sense for buyers who find a legitimate, supported unit at a sensible price and primarily play shorter sessions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to choose between the five
Choose by latency requirement
- Competitive shooters, fighting games and rhythm games: prioritize a dedicated 2.4 GHz USB connection and use the dongle rather than ordinary Bluetooth.
- Turn-based, story-driven and casual games: Bluetooth may be acceptable if your device’s implementation is stable, but test audio and controls before committing to a long session.
- Mixed device use: JBL Quantum TWS is the clearest documented dual-mode option; verify that both the Bluetooth path and USB-C dongle fit your devices.
Choose by voice-chat needs
JBL has the clearest published microphone hardware through its beamforming array. Sony’s AI-assisted microphone is another purpose-built approach. For the other three models, the cited information does not establish an independent microphone ranking, so prioritize returnability and test your voice in the apps your group actually uses.

Choose by battery expectations
Sony and JBL are the only models here with current, published rated figures in the supplied specifications. Compare the earbud-only number if you often play away from the case, and compare the case contribution if you travel or cannot recharge between sessions. Never treat an “up to” rating as a guaranteed runtime.
Choose by console and connector
Check three things before ordering: the console or device listed as compatible, whether the package contains a USB-C or another connector, and whether your platform permits USB audio while charging or using other accessories. For Arctis GameBuds, identify the PlayStation or Xbox SKU first. For Sony and JBL, verify the regional package and dongle support. For the older EPOS model, check support status rather than relying on a current-looking retailer page.
Setup checklist for replacing a headset
- Charge everything first. Charge the earbuds and case, then install any companion application offered for EQ, firmware or spatial-audio personalization.
- Connect the gaming transmitter. Plug the USB-C dongle directly into the console, PC or handheld when possible. Use an appropriate adapter only when the platform requires one.
- Select the USB audio device. In the operating system or console audio menu, choose the earbuds’ transmitter for output and chat input instead of leaving a previously connected headset selected.
- Pair and update. Follow the model’s pairing instructions and apply available firmware updates before judging connection stability or microphone behavior.
- Test voice chat in the real environment. Record a short sample with your game audio, keyboard or controller noise present. Adjust microphone level, noise processing and ear-tip size before your first competitive match.
- Check game-specific balance. Set chat and game-volume sliders separately, then confirm that spatial processing does not make positional cues confusing. Save an EQ profile for competitive games if the app supports profiles.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Buying the wrong generation: the Bluetooth-only Hammerhead True Wireless Pro is not the same product as Hammerhead Pro HyperSpeed. Read the complete model name.
- Assuming all console versions work everywhere: Arctis GameBuds’ PlayStation and Xbox versions are separate SKUs. Verify the package before checkout.
- Using Bluetooth for a latency-sensitive game: switch to the dedicated USB connection when the product provides one.
- Reading rated battery life as a guarantee: Sony’s and JBL’s figures are manufacturer “up to” or rated values affected by settings and usage.
- Ignoring fit: try the supplied tips, check the seal and stop increasing volume to compensate for a poor fit.
- Buying an older model without support checks: for EPOS GTW 270 Hybrid, confirm current stock, warranty coverage and platform support first.
- Expecting a feature to prove sound quality: noise cancellation, spatial personalization, beamforming and EQ can change the experience, but none guarantees that every listener will prefer the result.
A practical buying decision
Start with your platform. If you use PlayStation or Xbox, identify the correct Arctis GameBuds SKU or another package explicitly compatible with that console. If you want the most documented microphone hardware and two connection modes, shortlist JBL Quantum TWS. If immersive features and long rated endurance matter most, shortlist Sony INZONE Buds. If RTINGS’ comparative wireless-gaming result is your deciding evidence, consider Razer Hammerhead Pro HyperSpeed and verify the generation. If your sessions are short and you value bass plus app-based EQ, look for a supported EPOS GTW 270 Hybrid unit.
Whichever pair you choose, use its low-latency transmitter for gaming, test the microphone in your actual room and confirm the return and warranty terms. Those checks matter more than a generic promise that earbuds are automatically more comfortable or more accurate than an over-ear headset.
