Games Like Hell Is Us: Four Cryptic Adventures With Minimal Hand-Holding

Start with Outer Wilds if what you want from Hell Is Us is discovery driven by observation, inference and environmental clues. Choose TUNIC for a stronger action-combat connection, Return of the Obra Dinn for rigorous detective work, or The Witness for pure environmental puzzle solving. None reproduces every feature of Hell Is Us, but each matches a specific part of its deliberately unguided design.

Why Hell Is Us feels different

Hell Is Us is a third-person action-adventure set in a semi-open world shaped by civil war and a supernatural calamity. Its defining choice is to remove the usual navigation and quest aids: there is no map, compass, quest marker or quest journal directing you from one objective to the next. The official design brief says players should observe their surroundings, listen to non-player characters, reason from clues and trust their intuition.

That approach changes what “progress” means. In a conventional open-world game, progress is often a matter of reaching a highlighted destination. In Hell Is Us, progress depends on understanding a place well enough to decide where to go. Its melee combat remains important, but the world itself supplies much of the guidance. The game was released on 4 September 2025, developed by Rogue Factor and published by Nacon.

The recommendations below are therefore organised by the kind of self-directed play you want, rather than by surface similarities such as camera angle or setting.

Hell is Us – PlayStation 5
  • A HOSTILE WORLD: In addition to the civil war dividing the country, the region is suffering from a mysterious calamity, which has given rise to supernatural creatures that no modern weapon can defeat. Your drone and sword from a different age are your faithful allies as you cut a path through lands infested with terrifying chimeras and try to unravel the mystery of their appearance.
  • A UNIQUE EXPLORATION SYSTEM: No map, no compass, no quest markers. Following your instincts is part of the adventure. Enjoy a unique experience that uses innovative writing and level design to let you make your own decisions and follow your instincts as you explore. Your discoveries are yours alone.
  • COMBAT AGAINST ORIGINAL CREATURES: Swords, spears and axes. A wide range of weapons forged specially for fighting these supernatural creatures is available. You must learn how to fight these monsters and use your drone wisely to stay alive.
  • 'The central theme of Hell is Us is that human violence is a perpetual cycle fueled by human emotions and passions.'' – Jonathan Jacques-Belletête, Creative Director

At a glance: which game matches which part of Hell Is Us?

Game Guidance and progression Combat emphasis What it shares with Hell Is Us Main difference
Outer Wilds Knowledge gained by investigating environmental changes, signals and ancient writing Not the focus Self-directed discovery and inference First-person space exploration with an endless time loop
TUNIC Instruction-manual pages, secrets and techniques reconstructed by the player Action combat against monsters Cryptic exploration combined with action Isometric, stylised and fairy-tale-like
Return of the Obra Dinn Logical deduction from scenes and evidence No combat focus Investigation without waypoint-led play First-person mystery on a contained merchant ship
The Witness Puzzle rules learned from examples embedded in the island Virtually no melee or horror framing Environmental clues and discovery of systems A puzzle-first island rather than an action adventure

1. Outer Wilds is the closest match for knowledge-driven discovery

What you do

Outer Wilds is an open-world mystery about a solar system trapped in an endless time loop. Its worlds contain hidden locations that change over time. You investigate those changes, follow signals and decipher ancient alien writing to understand what is happening.

The important similarity is that information, not a conventional equipment ladder, is what unlocks the next step. A location that seemed inaccessible can become understandable once you have learned the right fact elsewhere. The player’s growing mental model of the solar system functions as the real progression system.

Why it suits a Hell Is Us player

If the appeal of Hell Is Us is being placed in an unfamiliar environment and having to read it for yourself, Outer Wilds is the strongest recommendation. Both games make observation more valuable than following a waypoint. You are encouraged to notice an environmental change, connect it to an earlier clue and decide what to test next.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That makes it a particularly good choice for players who enjoy keeping a mental record of locations, symbols and unanswered questions. The satisfaction comes from realising that separate observations describe one larger system, not from being handed the next objective.

What is not the same

The perspective and setting are entirely different. Outer Wilds is first-person space exploration, while Hell Is Us is a third-person adventure in a war-torn, supernatural landscape. The time-loop structure also changes the rhythm of discovery. There is no reason to expect the same melee-combat experience or the same tone.

Rank #2
Hell Is Us (Deutsche Verpackung) (PS5)
  • German packaging. German instructions. German playable.
  • 3rd person action adventure that combines intense close combat with the thrill of exploration. Player plating, full control over adventure, through research, discovery and decision. A wide range of weapons including swords, spears and axes.
  • A huge semi-open world and a unique mature setting paired with an innovative design philosophy.
  • Intense action and a unique risk reward system that combines endurance with the health of the player.

Choose Outer Wilds when the priority is deciphering a world through accumulated knowledge. Do not choose it because you want a direct substitute for third-person fighting.

2. TUNIC combines cryptic exploration with action combat

A world you learn page by page

TUNIC sends a small fox through an interconnected ruined world filled with secrets, hidden treasures, monsters and puzzles. Its signature discovery system is an in-game instruction manual reconstructed one page at a time. Those pages reveal maps, tips, special techniques and deeper secrets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The manual is more than a conventional tutorial. Finding a page can change how you interpret an area you have already visited. A diagram, phrase or illustration may explain a technique, point toward a hidden route or clarify a rule that was previously opaque. The player gradually assembles the context needed to read the world.

Why it suits a Hell Is Us player

Among these recommendations, TUNIC is the best fit for someone who wants cryptic exploration without giving up an action layer. Combat against monsters gives your exploration a physical risk, while the interconnected world rewards close attention to landmarks and secrets. The game asks you to discover what matters instead of presenting every answer immediately.

Its design also captures the pleasure of finding an apparently minor object and later recognising its importance. The manual pages make that learning process explicit: maps, techniques and deeper secrets become meaningful as your understanding grows.

Rank #3
Brothers in Arms Hells Highway
  • Experience the largest paratrooper operation in World War II
  • Get orders from HQ, go on patrol, spot the enemy, and set up a devastating ambush
  • Each character designed with individual personality, unique story and background
  • Incredibly realistic, from trading ammunition to helping wounded allies
  • Fight major multiplayer battles with dozens of players on each side

What is not the same

TUNIC is isometric and stylised, with a lighter fairy-tale tone. Hell Is Us uses a third-person viewpoint and frames its exploration around civil war and supernatural calamity. The visual language and emotional register therefore differ even when the discovery structure feels familiar.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pick TUNIC if the phrase “action game with secrets you must decode” describes your ideal follow-up. It is less suitable if you specifically want realistic landscapes, a darker war setting or the same camera perspective.

3. Return of the Obra Dinn is the pure deduction option

An investigation built from evidence

Return of the Obra Dinn is a first-person mystery adventure based on exploration and logical deduction. You investigate a merchant ship that returned without a visible crew and reconstruct what happened from scenes and evidence.

Its central question is not “Where is the next marker?” but “What can I prove from what I have seen?” Each observation contributes to a larger reconstruction. Progress comes from identifying relationships between events and drawing conclusions that account for the available evidence.

Why it suits a Hell Is Us player

This is the strongest choice for readers who value the investigative side of Hell Is Us above combat or open landscapes. Both games ask you to pay attention to context and act on your own interpretation rather than wait for a quest journal to tell you what a clue means.

The experience is especially appropriate if you enjoy testing a theory, revisiting a scene and changing your conclusion when the evidence no longer fits. The game treats deduction as the main activity, not as an optional layer on top of exploration.

What is not the same

The setting is a contained merchant ship rather than a semi-open world. The presentation is monochrome, and combat is not the focus. There is no melee system to complement the investigation and no broad landscape to wander through.

Choose Return of the Obra Dinn when you want the most concentrated no-hand-holding detective experience. It matches Hell Is Us in its demand for reasoning, not in genre balance, scale or atmosphere.

4. The Witness turns environmental discovery into a puzzle language

Rules hidden in the landscape

The Witness strands you on a strange island containing clues, dozens of locations and more than 500 puzzles. Its official description says that it treats the player as intelligent and their time as precious, with each puzzle introducing a new idea.

The island is therefore both setting and curriculum. You encounter examples, infer the rule they demonstrate and apply that rule to later puzzles. The environment communicates mechanics through arrangement and repetition rather than through a stream of explicit instructions.

  • HOW TO PLAY: The Dealer draws a Scenario Card and reads it aloud. The other players choose two of their Action Cards and play them, facedown. The Dealer shuffles the Action Cards and picks the one they definitely would not do, saying "HELL NO!" Then, they pick the Action Card they definitely would do, saying "HELL YEAH!"
  • SITUATION: While scuba diving, your wound starts bleeding, and sharks begin to circle. What do you do?
  • ACTION: Ask for an autograph! Hell No
  • ACTION: Use your jetpack to escape! Hell Yeah
  • REPEAT PLAY: With 135 Situation Cards and 387 Action Cards you'll never run out of wild predicaments

Why it suits a Hell Is Us player

If the part of Hell Is Us that interests you most is learning to read a place, The Witness is the specialist recommendation. It provides a concentrated version of environmental storytelling in the broad design sense: the world itself teaches you how to think about it.

This is a good fit for players who enjoy stopping, examining a scene and asking what rule the arrangement implies. It rewards patience and independent reasoning instead of reflexes or route optimisation.

What is not the same

The Witness has virtually none of Hell Is Us’s melee or horror framing. Its focus is environmental puzzle solving on an island, not action-adventure traversal through a landscape affected by war and supernatural forces.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose it when puzzles are the reason you want minimal hand-holding. If you need combat or a narrative mystery to drive exploration, one of the other three games will be a closer fit.

How to choose among the four

  1. Choose Outer Wilds for discovery through knowledge. You will investigate a changing solar system, track signals and decode ancient writing. It is the broadest match for the feeling of building your own understanding of a world.
  2. Choose TUNIC for action plus secrets. Its interconnected ruins, monsters and reconstructed manual make it the closest option when combat must remain part of the formula.
  3. Choose Return of the Obra Dinn for evidence and deduction. The ship setting is compact, but the reasoning burden is unusually concentrated. This is the pick for solving a case rather than clearing a map.
  4. Choose The Witness for environmental puzzles. More than 500 puzzles and a rule-learning structure make it the clearest choice when the landscape itself should teach you the game.

What “minimal hand-holding” means in each game

The phrase covers several different design decisions, and separating them prevents a mismatched recommendation.

  • Navigation freedom: Hell Is Us removes maps, compasses and quest markers. Outer Wilds similarly centres self-directed movement, but its setting is a solar system rather than a war-torn terrestrial region.
  • Knowledge as progression: Outer Wilds expects you to connect environmental changes, signals and writing. What you learn determines what you can understand next.
  • Instructions as discoveries: TUNIC makes its manual something you reconstruct. Maps, tips and techniques are rewards for exploration rather than a complete briefing at the start.
  • Evidence as progression: Return of the Obra Dinn asks you to reconstruct events logically from observed scenes.
  • Rules as progression: The Witness introduces puzzle ideas through examples and expects you to apply them independently.

These are related forms of player responsibility, but they produce different moods. A player who dislikes waypoint chasing may love all four; a player who specifically wants melee combat should start with TUNIC, while a player who wants a mystery to solve may prefer Outer Wilds or Return of the Obra Dinn.

The recommendation order

For most people searching for “games like Hell Is Us,” begin with Outer Wilds. It most closely matches the idea that careful observation and inference should replace constant direction. Move to TUNIC when action combat and hidden techniques matter more than matching tone. Pick Return of the Obra Dinn for a focused, evidence-based investigation, and finish with The Witness when the puzzle language of a place is the feature you want to explore.

That order is based on the specific aspects these games share with Hell Is Us, not on a claim that they have identical stories, perspectives or mechanics.
