Crimson Desert is no longer an upcoming release: Pearl Abyss launched the open-world action-adventure worldwide on March 19, 2026. Whether you have not played it yet, want a game with some of its qualities, or are waiting for more content, the closest choice depends on what you want most: open-world discovery, action combat, story-led quests, or a broad historical setting.
What makes a game feel like Crimson Desert?
Pearl Abyss describes Crimson Desert as an open-world action-adventure. Its world includes wilderness, cities, ruins, and varied cultures; its combat uses weapons such as swords, axes, and spears alongside ranged and hand-to-hand attacks; and its systems include flexible progression and traversal such as climbing and gliding. Those ingredients make it more useful to compare games by individual strengths than to look for a one-to-one substitute.

Challenge and guidance are also worth weighing. TechRadar notes that Crimson Desert does not provide difficulty options and does not hand-hold players through puzzles. The games below differ in how they emphasize exploration, combat, story, and direction.
Which game should you play?
| Game | Best match for | What it shares | Key difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elden Ring | Open-world discovery | Exploration that rewards finding your own route | This comparison is about exploration, not a claim that its combat, story, or difficulty matches Crimson Desert. |
| Dragon’s Dogma 2 | Action combat and monster encounters | Combat-focused fantasy action; community recommendations also point to climbing large creatures | A combat alternative, not a clone. |
| The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt | Story-led fantasy quests | A rich, story-filled world with quests and diversions | Its stronger story emphasis may not suit players who mainly want combat. |
| Assassin’s Creed Valhalla | A large, accessible historical open world | Free roaming, quests, and treasure hunting | Its medieval historical setting and action-RPG structure differ from Crimson Desert’s fantasy continent. |
Choose by what you want to do
For exploration without a prescribed route: Elden Ring
Elden Ring is the strongest pick if your favorite part of Crimson Desert is setting out to see what lies beyond the next landmark. PC Gamer describes its world as centered on organic exploration and discovery. Choose it for that sense of finding your own way, rather than expecting the same story structure, combat, or challenge.
#1 Best Overall
- The outer worlds is a new single-player first-person sci-fi rpg from obsidian entertainment and private division
- In the outer worlds, you awake from hibernation on a colonist ship that was lost in transit to halcyon, the furthest colony from earth located at the edge of the galaxy, only to find yourself in the midst of a deep conspiracy threatening to destroy it. As you explore the furthest reaches of space and encounter various factions, all-vying for power, the character you decide to become will determine how this player-driven story unfolds. In the corporate equation for the colony, you are the unplanned variable
For fighting monsters up close: Dragon’s Dogma 2
If you want fights to be the main attraction, consider Dragon’s Dogma 2. TechRadar explicitly says Crimson Desert’s combat may remind players of it, and community recommendations highlight the series’ combat and the spectacle of climbing large creatures. That makes it a relevant action-focused alternative, though the two games are not interchangeable.
For quests and a story-rich fantasy world: The Witcher 3
Pick The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt if you want fantasy quests and diversions to carry the experience. PC Gamer emphasizes its rich, story-filled world. A community commenter also notes that it is more story-oriented, so it is a less direct fit if you are looking for combat first and lore second.

For roaming a broad historical setting: Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Its historical setting and action-RPG structure set it apart from Crimson Desert’s fantasy world, while keeping open-world exploration central.
How to make the choice
- Prioritize exploration: Start with Elden Ring for a world built around organic discovery.
- Prioritize action combat: Try Dragon’s Dogma 2 for fantasy fights and monster encounters.
- Prioritize narrative quests: Choose The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for its story-rich world.
- Prioritize a historical open world: Choose Assassin’s Creed Valhalla for roaming, quests, and treasure hunting.
- Consider challenge and guidance: Compare how much direction and difficulty flexibility you want; these titles should not be assumed to match Crimson Desert on either.
