Set up a HomePod mini or HomePod and it automatically becomes a home hub; an Apple TV becomes one after you assign it to a room in Home. Then use the Home app on an iPhone or iPad to add compatible accessories. A hub lets you control devices while away, share access, and run automations. Whether you need one depends on the accessory and the features you want—especially for Matter and Thread devices.
Choose and set up an Apple home hub
Apple’s home hub must be in your home, connected to your home Wi-Fi, and powered on. Choose a device that suits your home and the accessories you plan to use.

Add a HomeKit or Matter accessory
Use an updated iPhone or iPad; Apple says accessories can’t be added to Home from a Mac. Before you begin, check the accessory manual for compatibility, required bridge hardware, firmware updates, or setup steps in the manufacturer’s app. Keep the accessory powered on and nearby, and turn on Bluetooth.
- Open the Home app: Tap Add, then Add Accessory, and follow the onscreen instructions.
- Pair the accessory: Scan its QR code or enter its Apple Home setup code. An eight-digit Apple Home code may be printed on the accessory, its box, or its documentation. Matter accessories may use an 11- or 21-digit code.
- Choose an existing Matter pairing if needed: If the Matter accessory is already paired with another app, tap More Options and select it. The app it was paired with may provide a pairing code.
- Finish configuring it: Allow network access if prompted, assign the accessory to a room, and give it a name you’ll recognize. Siri can use that name when you ask it to control the accessory.
Apple’s accessory setup instructions and iPhone Home guide cover the prompts and code-entry flow.

Do Matter accessories need a hub?
Not always for local pairing and control: Apple says an iPhone with iOS 18 or later can add and control Matter accessories in Home without a hub. Apple nevertheless recommends a hub for the best experience. If you want the hub functions—such as control while away and automations—set one up. Thread-based accessories have a separate requirement: hub operation for them requires a Thread-enabled home hub.

Fix accessory setup and response problems
If the accessory won’t add
- Confirm it has power, is close to the router, Bluetooth is on, and the accessory type is supported. Install available software or firmware updates.
- Check the manual for a required bridge or manufacturer-app setup. If the accessory belongs to another home, reset it only as directed by its manufacturer.
- If you see a network compatibility warning, check whether the accessory requires 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; some accessories do not work on 5 GHz networks.
- If Add Accessory is missing, check your Home permissions. The home owner must give residents Add and Edit Accessories permission.
- For a Matter setup error, verify any required hub is configured and use the Apple Account used to set up the home.
Apple’s accessory pairing troubleshooting guide provides additional checks.
If Home shows “No Response”
First consider the scope of the failure. If only one manufacturer’s accessories are affected, work through that manufacturer’s devices and bridge; if accessories from several manufacturers are affected, check the shared network, software, and hub.
