Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteGalaxy AI translation failures usually come from one of five causes: an unsupported phone, Android or One UI version; an unavailable language or missing language pack; no network or Samsung account for Live Translate; blocked microphone access; or speech that the microphone cannot understand. Work through the checks below in that order. Interpreter can work in an offline conversation mode after its language packs are downloaded, while Live Translate calls require a network connection and a signed-in Samsung account.
Start with the failure you can see
Identify the symptom before changing settings. The fastest fix depends on whether the feature is missing, cannot hear speech, or fails while translating a call.

| What you see | Most likely area | First check |
|---|---|---|
| Interpreter or Live Translate is not listed | Device, Android/One UI, region, app, or language support | Confirm a supported device running Android 14 with One UI 6.1 or later, then check the supported-language and app lists. |
| The microphone button does nothing | Interpreter permission or the device-wide microphone switch | Allow microphone access for Interpreter and turn on the microphone tile in Quick Settings. |
| Interpreter opens but does not transcribe you | Recording control, noise, distance, or speech recognition | Tap the microphone beside the selected language, speak one at a time, and move somewhere quieter. |
| A language is absent | Language pack or regional availability | Check the supported pair and download the pack. English and Spanish are preinstalled; other supported languages need a free download. |
| Live Translate cannot start or stops during a call | Network, Samsung account, call-app support, or regional availability | Reconnect Wi-Fi or mobile data, sign in to the Samsung account, and verify the app under Live Translate settings. |
| Phone-based control is inconvenient | Optional accessory setup | Use Samsung’s Galaxy Buds integration if both the phone and Buds model are compatible. |
Verify that your phone, software, region, and app are eligible
Galaxy AI translation is not a universal Android feature. Samsung limits it to select phones and tablets running Android 14 with One UI 6.1 or later. A device can therefore have a recent-looking interface but still lack Interpreter or Live Translate if its model is outside the supported group.
Check the software baseline
- Open Settings > Software update and install any pending system update.
- Open the Galaxy Store and apply updates for Interpreter and other Samsung applications. Install updates offered for the Phone app as well.
- Restart the phone after the updates finish. This reloads the updated translation components before you test them.
The exact model list, supported languages, and regional availability can change. If the feature remains absent after updating, treat that as a compatibility or regional-availability problem rather than a microphone fault.

Check whether the calling app is supported
Live Translate is available through Samsung’s Phone dialer and through listed apps that include WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, Signal, Line, WeChat, Telegram, Meet, and Kakao Talk. An app can be installed and still lack the translation control if Samsung does not support that app on your device or in your region.
For a supported-app check, open Settings > Galaxy AI > Call assist > Live Translate > Other apps. The app must appear in that list. If it does not, Live Translate cannot be enabled there through the documented settings.
Update Interpreter and restart it before changing anything else
Samsung’s troubleshooting sequence for Interpreter that stops or fails to recognize speech begins with software updates, microphone access, and an Interpreter restart. Do all three before testing a language change, because an outdated component can make a correct permission or language configuration appear broken.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Install pending system updates from Settings > Software update.
- Open the Galaxy Store and update Interpreter and Samsung apps. If the Phone app is listed for update, install that too.
- Close Interpreter completely, reopen it, and start a new conversation. If the problem persists, restart the phone and test again.
Run the test after the restart with the same language pair and in a quiet place. Changing several variables at once makes it difficult to tell whether the update or another setting solved the problem.
Restore microphone permission and the recording control
Interpreter cannot transcribe speech when Android has denied its microphone permission, when the device-wide microphone control is disabled, or when recording has not been started for the selected language.

Allow Interpreter to use the microphone
- Open Settings > Apps > Interpreter > Permissions.
- Choose Microphone.
- Select Allow only while using the app. Samsung also documents Ask every time as an available choice.
- Return to Interpreter and approve the prompt if Android asks again.
Check the device-wide microphone switch
Swipe down to open Quick Settings and look for the microphone privacy control. If the microphone is disabled at the device level, an app-level permission cannot restore recording. Turn the device microphone back on, then reopen Interpreter.
Start recording for the correct language
Interpreter has a microphone control beside the selected language. Tap that microphone icon before speaking. Selecting a language alone does not necessarily begin a recording session; the control indicates which participant is currently being heard.

Fix missing or unavailable languages
Language availability has two separate parts: whether Samsung supports the language pair for your device and region, and whether the required language pack is installed.
Understand the preinstalled packs
English and Spanish are preinstalled in Interpreter. Other supported languages require a free download. A language can therefore appear in Samsung’s supported list but remain unusable until its pack has finished downloading.
Download packs before an offline conversation
- Open Interpreter and open the language selector.
- Find the language you need. A download icon indicates that its pack is not installed.
- Download every language required for the conversation and wait for each download to complete.
- Select the two installed languages and begin a new conversation.
Interpreter conversation mode can use downloaded packs without a network connection. This offline behavior applies only after the necessary packs are already on the device; it does not make every language available offline.

When the language is not listed at all
Samsung says supported languages and regional availability are limited. If a language does not appear in the selector, do not substitute a similarly named dialect and expect it to work. Check the current supported-language information for your device and region. Samsung’s October 14, 2026 language expansion lists 24 supported languages for Live Translate, but the total does not mean every language pair is offered in every country or on every eligible model.

Separate Interpreter from Live Translate
The two features use different requirements, so a failure in one does not prove that the other is broken.
| Feature | Where it runs | Connection and account requirement | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interpreter conversation mode | Interpreter app on supported Galaxy phones and tablets | Downloaded language packs can support conversation use offline | Supported device, One UI/Android version, installed packs, microphone permission, and recording control |
| Live Translate | Samsung Phone dialer and listed messaging or calling apps | Network connection and a signed-in Samsung account are required | Language pair, network, account, app listing, and regional availability |
Do not use an offline Interpreter test to diagnose a Live Translate call. Live Translate needs an active Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection even when the corresponding language pack is present.
Repair Live Translate call setup
Choose both languages and install any requested pack
- Open Settings > Galaxy AI > Call assist > Live Translate.
- Choose the language you will speak and the language for the other participant.
- Look for a download icon next to either language and download the requested pack.
- Save the setting and place a test call through the Samsung Phone dialer or a listed supported app.
Restore the network and Samsung account
- Turn off Airplane mode.
- Reconnect to a reliable Wi-Fi network or enable mobile data.
- Confirm that the phone is signed in to the Samsung account requested by Galaxy AI.
- Retry the call after the connection is restored.
Live Translate availability varies by language and region. A network and account check will not make an unsupported language pair or unavailable country setting appear.
Check the in-call control
Use the documented Live Translate control in the call interface after selecting the two languages. If no translation control appears in a third-party app, return to Settings > Galaxy AI > Call assist > Live Translate > Other apps and confirm that the app is listed. If it is not listed, use the Samsung Phone dialer or another app that Samsung supports instead.

Improve speech capture when Interpreter hears nothing or mistranscribes
Permission fixes do not solve recognition problems caused by how speech reaches the microphone. Samsung notes that recognition varies with pronunciation, voice level, and the surrounding environment.
Use a controlled two-person turn
- Have only one person speak at a time.
- Tap the microphone button for the person whose language is selected.
- Speak at a normal, steady volume and pause when the sentence ends.
- Wait for the translation before switching to the other language and microphone control.
Remove physical and acoustic obstacles
- Keep the phone microphone unobstructed by a hand, case flap, or clothing.
- Move away from traffic, music, fans, and several simultaneous conversations.
- Hold the phone close enough for a clear voice but do not cover the microphone opening.
- Repeat the test in a quiet room before deciding that the language model is failing.
Samsung’s documented limitation is explicit: “Not all accents, dialects, and expressions are recognized, and actual performance may vary depending on pronunciation, voice level, and the surrounding environment.” Translation output is not guaranteed to be exact; Samsung also states, “Translation results may vary.”
Use Galaxy Buds only as an optional control path
Samsung documents Galaxy Buds integration with Interpreter. Touching the Buds can start a conversation, which is useful when holding the phone is inconvenient. Buds are not required for Galaxy AI translation, and adding them will not fix an unsupported language, missing network connection, or blocked phone microphone.
Exact behavior depends on the phone and Buds model. If the touch gesture does not start Interpreter, first verify that the phone itself can open Interpreter, has the required language packs, and passes a microphone test. That separates an accessory-compatibility issue from a translation-service issue.
Symptom-based recovery paths
Interpreter opens, but the microphone icon is unavailable
Check Interpreter’s microphone permission, then the Quick Settings microphone switch. Reopen the app and tap the microphone beside the selected language. If the control remains unavailable, install pending system and Galaxy Store updates and restart the phone.

The app hears speech but returns no translation
Confirm that both languages are supported and that any download icons have been completed. Select the language pair again, start a fresh conversation, and test one speaker at a time in a quiet location. An offline test is valid only for Interpreter packs already downloaded.
Live Translate works in Phone but not in a messaging app
Check whether the app is listed under Settings > Galaxy AI > Call assist > Live Translate > Other apps. If it is absent, the documented integration does not cover that app on the current phone or region. Also restore Wi-Fi or mobile data and confirm the Samsung account is signed in.
A language worked before but disappeared after setup
Open the language selector and look for a download icon. A pack may not have been installed on the current device, or the selected pair may not be available in the current region. Recheck the supported-language list rather than assuming that every Live Translate language is available in every Interpreter conversation.

Reduce background noise, keep the microphone clear, use one speaker at a time, and speak at a steady volume. Accents, dialects, expressions, pronunciation, and environmental noise can all affect recognition, so compare the result with a short, clearly spoken sentence before changing other settings.
Complete checklist before concluding that Galaxy AI is broken
- The phone or tablet is a Samsung-supported model.
- Android 14 and One UI 6.1 or later are installed.
- System, Galaxy Store, Interpreter, Samsung app, and Phone updates are complete.
- Interpreter has microphone permission set to Allow only while using the app or Ask every time.
- The device-wide microphone switch in Quick Settings is enabled.
- The microphone icon beside the selected Interpreter language was tapped before speaking.
- Both people speak one at a time in a quiet location with the microphone unobstructed.
- The required language packs are downloaded; English and Spanish are already preinstalled.
- The chosen language pair and region are supported.
- Live Translate has Wi-Fi or mobile data and a signed-in Samsung account.
- The calling or messaging app appears in the Live Translate app list.
- Any Galaxy Buds being used are compatible with the phone and Buds model.
If every applicable item is correct but the feature is still absent or unusable, the remaining explanation is likely a model, language-pair, app, or regional availability limit rather than a setting that can be repaired locally. Samsung’s support documentation should be checked for the current device and country before replacing hardware or repeatedly changing permissions.
