Buy the Galaxy A56 5G if its extra cost is reasonable. It has the stronger Exynos 1580 platform and a higher-resolution ultrawide camera, giving it more hardware headroom for several years of One UI updates. The Galaxy A36 5G is the better value when the price gap is large and your use is mainly messaging, browsing, streaming, social apps, and everyday photos.
Software support does not separate them: Samsung promises both phones up to six generations of Android and One UI upgrades plus six years of security updates. The long-term case for the A56 is therefore based on hardware, not a longer official support window.

Galaxy A36 vs A56: the short answer
Both phones are unusually similar in the areas that determine basic ownership: each has a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED display with up to a 120Hz refresh rate, a 5,000mAh battery, 45W charging, a 50MP optically stabilized main camera, IP67 protection, and the same stated software-support policy.
The meaningful differences are the processor and the ultrawide camera. The Galaxy A56 uses Samsung’s Exynos 1580, while the Galaxy A36 uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 6 Gen 3. On the published specifications, the A56’s platform is stronger. That makes it the more sensible choice for demanding apps and for maintaining performance as future One UI versions become more resource-intensive. This is a hardware-based longevity inference, not the result of a new standardized benchmark.

One UI 9.0 and Android 17 availability
As of 21 October 2026, Samsung’s firmware notice for model SM-A366U lists Android 17 with One UI 9 and a release date of 19 October 2026. The notice also identifies the September 2026 security patch.
A separate Samsung notice for model SM-A566B likewise lists Android 17 with One UI 9 and a 19 October 2026 release date. These notices confirm that both model families are covered; they do not mean every A36 or A56 receives the update on the same day.
Samsung cautions that the exact changes and availability can differ by device model, country, and service provider. A phone sold in another market may have a different model code or a later approval date. Check the software-update screen on your own handset instead of relying on a rollout date reported for a different region.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
How to check your phone
- Open Settings on the Galaxy A36 or A56.
- Open Software update and choose Download and install (the wording can vary slightly by carrier).
- Read the model and Android/One UI version shown before accepting the download. Confirm that the phone is connected to Wi-Fi and has sufficient battery or is charging.
- If no update appears, check again later. A missing prompt does not prove that your model is unsupported; staged, carrier-dependent distribution can delay availability.
Software support: a tie on paper, not necessarily in use
Samsung says both the Galaxy A36 and Galaxy A56 receive up to six generations of Android and One UI upgrades and six years of security updates. Samsung summarized the policy in its 2025 A-series launch announcement: “Now with up to six generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades and six years of security updates, the Galaxy A series reinforces its software longevity even more.”
“Up to” matters. It describes the maximum stated policy, while the actual delivery schedule can vary by model, market, and service provider. The two phones do not have different official end dates in the published promise, so paying more for the A56 does not buy extra guaranteed update years.
Why the A56 can still last better
Long-term usability depends on more than the number of updates. Newer Android and One UI releases can increase demands on the processor, memory management, graphics, camera processing, and background services. The A56’s Exynos 1580 gives it a stronger documented starting point than the A36’s Snapdragon 6 Gen 3. It should therefore have more room to remain responsive as the software grows, although that conclusion is an inference from specifications rather than a measured multi-year test.

The A36 can still be a six-year-support phone in policy terms. Whether it feels comfortable that far into its life will depend on workload, storage configuration, battery condition, app requirements, and network use. A buyer who uses lightweight apps may never notice the A56’s additional headroom.

Performance and everyday responsiveness
Galaxy A56: the safer choice for demanding use
The Exynos 1580 is the A56’s clearest hardware advantage. It is the platform to choose if you regularly switch between many apps, edit photos or video, play demanding games, or plan to keep the phone until the end of Samsung’s promised update period. The available evidence supports a likely advantage in sustained headroom, but it does not establish a particular frame rate, benchmark score, or battery result.
Galaxy A36: enough for ordinary phone work
The Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 in the A36 is paired with the same 120Hz-class AMOLED display and the same software-support promise. For messaging, email, web pages, video streaming, social networks, navigation, banking, and ordinary photography, the A36’s specification is adequate. The value question is whether those tasks describe your use for most of the phone’s life. If they do, the A56’s processor premium may not translate into a benefit you notice every day.
Camera differences: the ultrawide is the real divider
Main camera: a specification tie
Both models use a 50MP f/1.8 main camera with autofocus and optical image stabilization. That means the A56 does not have a higher-resolution or stabilized main-camera advantage on the published specifications. OIS can help reduce blur from hand movement, but final image quality also depends on processing and lighting; the supplied specifications do not establish that one phone produces better main-camera images in every scene.
Ultrawide: A56 has more capture detail on paper
The A36’s ultrawide is 8MP, while the A56’s is 12MP. The A56 is consequently the better-equipped option for landscapes, architecture, interiors, and group shots where you need a wider field of view. More megapixels do not guarantee better images in all lighting, but the 12MP sensor gives the A56 a higher-resolution starting point for this camera.

Front camera and video
Both phones have a 12MP front camera, and Samsung lists 10-bit HDR front recording for each. There is no documented resolution advantage for selfies or front-camera video, so choose between them based on the rear ultrawide and processing platform rather than the front-camera specification.

Display
The two phones share a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED panel with refresh rates up to 120Hz. For reading, streaming, scrolling, and general viewing, the headline display experience is therefore closely matched. The available comparison does not establish differences in peak brightness, calibration, touch sampling, or panel glass, so those should not be assumed from the model names alone.
Battery and 45W charging
Each phone has a rated 5,000mAh battery and 45W wired charging. Neither model has a documented capacity advantage. Actual battery life will depend on screen brightness, refresh-rate behavior, mobile signal, gaming, camera use, background synchronization, and battery aging. A 45W rating describes the charging class, not a guaranteed time from empty to full under every condition.

Both models carry an IP67 rating and a Corning glass cover according to the published comparison. IP67 is a laboratory protection classification for dust and temporary immersion under specified conditions; it is not a promise that a phone is damage-proof. Ports, seals, and glass can wear or crack, so keep liquid exposure within the manufacturer’s stated limits and avoid treating the rating as insurance against accidental damage.

Is the Galaxy A56 worth the extra money?
At UK launch, TechRadar listed the Galaxy A36 at £399 and the Galaxy A56 at £499, a £100 difference. Those are launch figures, not a universal current price: country, storage configuration, retailer, promotions, and time can change the gap substantially.
Use the size of the actual gap where you live:
- Small or moderate premium: choose the A56. You are paying for the stronger processor and 12MP ultrawide, while retaining the same display class, battery capacity, charging class, protection rating, and support promise.
- Large premium: choose the A36 unless you need the A56’s performance or camera headroom. Put the saved money toward storage, a protective case, a screen protector, or a compatible 45W USB-C charger if those are required for your setup.
- Unclear pricing: compare phones with the same storage and warranty terms. A cheaper A56 configuration and a heavily discounted A36 can reverse the value calculation.
Which phone fits your use?
Choose the Galaxy A36 5G when:
- Your main activities are messaging, browsing, streaming, social apps, navigation, and routine photos.
- The A56 costs substantially more in your market.
- You value the same six-generation Android/One UI and six-year security promise but do not need extra processing headroom.
- Your camera use is mostly the main camera or standard selfie camera rather than wide landscapes and large groups.
Choose the Galaxy A56 5G when:
- You intend to keep the phone for four to six years and want more margin as applications and One UI evolve.
- You play demanding games, multitask heavily, edit media, or want the stronger documented processor.
- You frequently use the ultrawide camera and prefer its 12MP specification over the A36’s 8MP unit.
- The price premium is close to the £100 UK launch difference or lower after local discounts.
Do not choose solely for these features
Do not buy the A56 expecting a longer official update period; both models share the stated maximum. Do not buy it for a larger battery, faster rated charging, a bigger display, a higher-resolution main camera, or a higher-resolution front camera, because the published specifications are shared in those areas.
How to plan a six-year ownership period
- Start with the price gap. Record the current prices for equivalent configurations in your country rather than using the UK launch figures as a current benchmark.
- Classify your workload. List the apps and tasks you actually use. Heavy multitasking, demanding games, and media editing favor the A56’s documented platform advantage; communication and streaming do not require that premium as clearly.
- Decide how important the ultrawide is. If you often photograph groups, buildings, travel scenes, or small rooms, the A56’s 12MP ultrawide is a meaningful specification difference. If you rarely switch from the main camera, it matters less.
- Check local update timing. Confirm your exact model code and carrier rollout. The SM-A366U and SM-A566B notices demonstrate One UI 9 availability, but they are not a guarantee for every regional variant on the same date.
- Budget for physical wear. Both phones share the same battery capacity and IP67 classification. Battery aging, cracked glass, and damaged ports can end practical ownership before the software promise does, so protection and careful charging remain part of a long-term plan.
Bottom-line buying decision
The Galaxy A56 5G is the better long-term buy when you can afford its premium: it combines the same unusually long software promise with the stronger Exynos 1580 platform and a 12MP ultrawide camera. The Galaxy A36 5G is the rational value choice when the discount is substantial and your needs are ordinary day-to-day phone tasks. One UI 9 and Android 17 are documented for both, but the release date and feature availability still depend on the exact model, country, and service provider.
