You can give a compatible older Windows PC a Chromebook-like interface with FydeOS, but it is not Google ChromeOS and it does not convert Windows in place. You boot FydeOS from a USB drive to check compatibility; installing it may replace Windows and its data. FydeOS for PC is available without a time-limited licence, although major-version updates may cost extra, according to the FydeOS edition guide.
What FydeOS changes—and what it doesn’t
FydeOS is based on ChromiumOS and aims to provide a Chromebook-like experience on compatible conventional PCs. It is a separate operating system, not Google ChromeOS, and installing it is not a way to keep Windows running underneath. Treat the project as an operating-system replacement, not a Windows makeover.

The word “free” needs a qualification: the FydeOS edition guide says FydeOS for PC can be used without a time-limited licence, while major-version updates may carry a fee. Check the current edition and licensing terms before downloading, since those details can change.
Can I install FydeOS on an old laptop?
Possibly, but “old” does not identify a compatible image. FydeOS offers PC variants selected largely by processor and graphics hardware, and the available choices can change. Its current selection guidance describes Intel Legacy for older Intel Core systems, Intel Slim for certain lower-power Celeron and Pentium systems, Intel Modern for newer Intel Core systems, and an AMD graphics variant. The download page currently marks Intel Legacy as discontinued, so do not rely on an older guide to choose an image.

Before downloading, identify the exact CPU model and graphics hardware. FydeOS suggests checking Windows with a system-information utility such as CPU-Z, Speccy, or HWiNFO. Then compare that information with the current FydeOS PC download options and edition selection guidance.
- NVIDIA graphics: FydeOS says its PC edition does not support NVIDIA graphics cards. If the computer also has Intel integrated graphics, its compatibility guidance suggests disabling NVIDIA in BIOS, if that option is available, and booting with Intel graphics.
- Android and Linux environments: FydeOS says these subsystems require a CPU with SSE4.2 support. A machine may boot the operating system yet lack these features.
- Other hardware: A supported processor does not guarantee working Wi-Fi, audio, graphics acceleration, touchpad, touchscreen, or sleep. Test the functions you depend on before installing.
FydeOS’s compatibility guidance and installation guide describe these limits. They do not establish compatibility for an unspecified computer model.

How do I install FydeOS from a USB drive?
Make the USB installer on a working Windows, macOS, or Linux computer if necessary. You will also need access to the target PC’s boot menu or firmware settings, and an 8 GB or larger USB 3.0 flash drive. Creating the installer erases the flash drive, so copy anything important off it first.

In Windows, identify the processor model and graphics hardware. Check the current FydeOS download and edition pages to select an image that matches; do not assume one “old PC” image covers every machine.
- Back up the target PC. Copy important Windows files to another drive or service before installation. FydeOS installation may overwrite the existing operating system and data. Confirm the current installer’s prompts before proceeding.
- Create the USB installer. Download the appropriate image from the FydeOS PC download page and write it to the USB drive. FydeOS recommends balenaEtcher and also permits Rufus on Windows. The USB drive will be erased during this step.
- Boot from USB and test. Connect the drive to the target PC, open its boot menu or firmware settings, and select USB boot. Follow the FydeOS startup instructions to run the system from the drive without committing to installation.
- Check the essentials. Test Wi-Fi, audio, display and graphics, touchpad or touchscreen, and sleep or wake. A successful startup alone does not prove that these functions work reliably.
- Install only if the trial is satisfactory. If you decide to proceed, follow the current on-screen installer carefully. Verify which disk and data it will affect; do not continue unless your backup is complete and you are comfortable replacing Windows.
FydeOS’s step-by-step installation guide was last updated May 5, 2025. Firmware menus and boot-key labels vary by PC maker, so consult the computer manufacturer’s instructions if the USB drive does not appear.

Will FydeOS run Android apps on my PC?
FydeOS advertises Android compatibility, but that does not mean every Android app will work on every PC. Its Android and Linux subsystems require SSE4.2 support in the CPU, and the wider hardware configuration also matters. Check the PC’s processor support and test the system before assuming Android apps will be available.
For comparison, Google says ChromeOS Flex does not support Android apps or Google Play. Its support documentation lists 4 GB RAM and 16 GB internal storage as minimums for Flex, not FydeOS; those figures should not be used as FydeOS requirements.

FydeOS or ChromeOS Flex?
Both can be tried from USB before installation, but their feature and hardware guidance differs. ChromeOS Flex is Google’s ChromeOS-like option for compatible PCs; Google says certified models are tested and guaranteed, while unsupported models are not guaranteed. FydeOS offers Android/Linux subsystem support subject to its own prerequisites and PC compatibility.
