Cybernews named Bluehost its best overall FTP-hosting pick in a roundup updated September 24, 2026. The article also covered DreamHost, SiteGround, Namecheap, HostGator, and Liquid Web. Its results are editorial tests and plan descriptions—not guarantees of current features or future uptime—so check the plan you intend to buy for its supported transfer protocols, account limits, and renewal price.
What Cybernews’s FTP hosting roundup says
Cybernews describes FTP hosting as web hosting that provides server space and access for transferring and managing website files. Common tasks include uploading site content, making updates, and moving backups. The roundup says its team tested 64 hosting providers, assessing performance, features, support, usability, and price-to-quality. Its reported methods included uptime monitoring, response-time observations, and stress tests with 50 virtual users. These are Cybernews’s reported methods and findings; they were not independently replicated for this article.

The provider descriptions do not all use the same monitoring period: Cybernews reports a one-month monitoring period for Bluehost and two-month assessments for several other providers. A short editorial test can help with context, but it cannot establish a provider’s long-term reliability or replace a service-level commitment.
Six providers highlighted by Cybernews
The roundup covered seven providers in total. The six below are the providers that can be included here; the source’s remaining pick is omitted. Treat feature descriptions as claims in the Cybernews article, not as confirmation of current plan terms.

| DreamHost | Speed | Plan-dependent FTP account counts, secure transfer protocols, and a control-panel file manager; the article says logs were not visible in that manager and were available through full FTP clients | 231 ms average response time during Cybernews’s assessment |
| SiteGround | Customer support | SSH/SFTP access, FTPES, and unlimited FTP accounts | 217 ms average response time; Cybernews also reported 99.99% uptime and seven minutes of downtime over two months |

| HostGator | Unlimited accounts | Unlimited FTP accounts and support for a range of FTP clients | 521 ms average response time in the provider description |
| Liquid Web | Customizable control-panel options | Unlimited FTP accounts; Cybernews positions it as a higher-priced option | 521 ms average response time in the provider description |
All figures in the test-result column are Cybernews’s 2026 reports, not uptime guarantees or comparable controlled benchmarks. The article’s comparison table and provider write-ups contain inconsistencies in some prices, account limits, uptime figures, and labels. It is therefore safer to use the roundup as a shortlist, then confirm current terms directly with the provider before choosing.
FTP, FTPS, and SFTP are different protocols
FTP transfers files between a client and a server, but standard FTP does not encrypt the connection. FTPS adds TLS encryption to FTP, while SFTP is a separate file-transfer protocol that runs over SSH. The names are similar, but the protocols are not interchangeable. If you handle credentials, customer information, or other sensitive files, confirm that the exact hosting plan supports the secure protocol your workflow requires. Do not assume that a listing for “FTP” means FTPS or SFTP is included.

How to choose a plan for file transfers
- Confirm the protocol. Check the plan’s documentation or ask support whether it offers SFTP, FTPS/FTPES, or only FTP, and whether secure access requires a particular tier or SSH access.
- Check account limits and permissions. Verify how many FTP users or accounts are included and whether you can restrict each user to a specific directory. Separate accounts and limited directory access can reduce the damage from a compromised credential.
- Compare storage and bandwidth with your workload. A site with frequent media uploads or large backups may need more capacity and transfer allowance than a small static site. Read the plan’s definitions and limits rather than relying on an “unlimited” label alone.
- Assess performance evidence in context. Look for the test duration, measurement method, and workload. A response-time figure or brief uptime observation from an editorial test is not a promise about your site’s experience.
- Evaluate support and the control panel. Check how support is reached and whether the control panel provides the file-management functions you need. If you need transfer logs or advanced client features, confirm that the web file manager is sufficient.
- Calculate the real cost. Compare the introductory rate with the renewal rate and the total cost over the period you expect to use the plan. The Cybernews roundup’s pricing details are not consistent throughout, and promotional terms can change.
When FTP hosting makes sense
FTP access can be useful for direct website uploads, maintenance, and file transfers supported by your hosting account. For routine administration, prefer an encrypted option such as SFTP or FTPS when the plan and client support it. FTP is not itself a backup strategy: keep independent copies of important site files and verify that you can restore them.
Cybernews’s roundup is most useful as an attributed comparison of six eligible providers and a starting point for plan research. Its rankings and test measurements should not be read as current guarantees; verify protocol support, limits, security controls, and pricing for the specific plan before signing up.
