Why washers develop musty odors
Odor can build when moisture and detergent or soil residue linger inside the washer. Leaving damp laundry in the basket can contribute to mildew, while too much detergent can leave residue. Front-load washers have an additional place to check: the folds of the door gasket, where moisture, lint, hair, or other debris can collect. Top-load washers can also develop odors from residue and dampness, particularly if wet laundry is left inside or the closed lid prevents the tub from airing out.

For day-to-day drying, a top-loader may be simpler: its lid can be left open, and there is no front-door gasket to inspect. A front-loader takes one extra maintenance step—checking and cleaning the gasket folds as the model’s manual directs. That is a practical difference, not proof that top-loaders have fewer odor problems overall.

Whirlpool recommends leaving the door open between loads for its front-load guidance and leaving the lid open in the cited top-load manual. Both styles also need correct detergent use and periodic tub cleaning. The cited manufacturer sources provide care recommendations, not a controlled comparison of odor rates or cleaning time across washer types.
Care routine for either washer type
- Unload promptly. Remove wet laundry when the cycle ends rather than leaving it in the basket.
- Vent the empty washer. Leave the door or lid open between uses when the room and household setup allow it.
- Use the recommended detergent and amount. Follow the washer manual and detergent label; using extra detergent can contribute to residue.
- Clean the dispenser. Follow the owner’s manual for removing or cleaning the detergent dispenser.
- Run a tub-cleaning cycle on the model’s schedule. Whirlpool’s cited guidance calls for monthly or every-30-cycle cleaning, while LG’s general buildup guidance recommends monthly cleaning. Follow your own washer’s instructions if they differ.
Extra steps for front-load washers
- Inspect the gasket folds for moisture, lint, hair, and residue.
- Clean the gasket using the method in the washer’s manual; do not assume every model permits the same cleaner or procedure.
- Leave the door open between loads so the door area can dry.
Extra steps for top-load washers
- Leave the lid open between loads when practical so the basket can dry.
- Clean the dispenser and, where fitted, the agitator or filter areas according to the manual.
- If the washer has a Clean Washer cycle, use it as directed. For models without one, follow the manual’s specified alternative procedure.
Use cleaners safely and follow the manual
Some Whirlpool procedures describe washer cleaner or liquid chlorine bleach as alternatives, and the cited top-load manual includes a washer-cleaner tablet procedure. These options are not interchangeable for every washer. Use only a cleaner and quantity approved for your model, follow the product label, and do not combine cleaners. Whirlpool also warns against certain thickened or no-splash bleach in a specified cycle. Do not apply a quantity or sequence from one model’s instructions to another washer.

Repeat the model-approved cleaning and drying routine rather than improvising with stronger or mixed cleaners. If odor continues after multiple tub cleans, LG USA Support advises seeking service; severe mildew may require professional cleaning.
