Which washer settings help prevent odors?
The main setting to use is the washer’s maintenance cycle—often called Clean Washer or Tub Clean—run with the machine empty and with only a cleaner approved for that model. It is intended to clean the washer itself, rather than wash clothes. For ordinary laundry, the useful choices are the correct detergent dose and a temperature suitable for the load.
Use the maintenance cycle on the washer’s schedule
Follow the interval in your owner’s manual. As examples for the models covered by their respective guidance, Whirlpool recommends running Clean Washer monthly or every 30 wash cycles, whichever comes first; LG recommends monthly tub cleaning in its top-load guidance. These are manufacturer-specific instructions, not a universal schedule. Whirlpool Product Help and LG USA Support describe the methods for their covered machines.
Consider warmer water if you always wash cold
Whirlpool advises using warm or hot wash settings sometimes, rather than washing exclusively in cold water, to help limit soil and detergent accumulation. LG notes that cold water may leave detergent incompletely dissolved and contribute to buildup or odor. Neither source gives a universal temperature or frequency. Use warm or hot water only when the garment’s care label and the washer’s instructions permit it. Whirlpool’s guidance and LG’s odor troubleshooting guidance apply to their respective products.

Use the right detergent amount and cleaner
More detergent will not fix an odor. Excess detergent can add to residue buildup, so use the type required by your machine—HE detergent where the washer requires it—and measure according to the detergent label and washer directions. For the maintenance cycle, check which cleaner and procedure your model permits. Whirlpool’s instructions describe an affresh tablet or a specified liquid chlorine bleach procedure for the cited Clean Washer cycle; LG recommends a cleaner formulated for washing-machine tubs. Do not combine cleaners or assume one brand’s procedure is suitable for another washer. Whirlpool and LG provide model-specific instructions.
Let the washer dry between loads
Unload laundry as soon as the cycle ends. Then leave the lid or door open until moisture inside has dried, provided doing so is safe in your household. Airflow helps the interior dry; it is a practical between-load habit, not a substitute for the machine’s maintenance cycle. Whirlpool and LG both recommend leaving the washer open to dry. What to do if the smell remains
If the odor persists after routine tub cleaning, troubleshoot the washer rather than changing wash settings repeatedly. LG recommends cleaning the dispenser and door gasket, checking whether a blocked drain-pump filter is affecting drainage, and seeking service if the smell remains after multiple tub-clean cycles. Consult your model’s instructions before removing or opening parts; filter access and cleaning procedures vary. LG USA Support.
