If you know Express, you already know the HTTP foundation beneath a default NestJS app. The shift is in how you organize it: declare routes in controllers, move application and database work into injectable providers, and register those pieces in modules. Prisma fits that structure as a provider wrapping the generated Prisma Client.
What carries over from Express—and what changes
NestJS uses Express as its default HTTP platform, although it can also use Fastify. Nest adds an application framework on top and continues to expose platform APIs, so familiarity with requests and responses still helps. The central change is that Nest builds routes and dependencies from application metadata rather than relying on route registration scattered through an Express app. See NestJS’s framework overview.

| Concern | Express mental model | NestJS pattern |
|---|---|---|
| Routing | Register handlers on an app or router | Declare controller classes and decorated route methods |
| Application logic | Call functions or modules from handlers | Inject providers, commonly services, into controllers |
| Composition | Arrange imports and function calls in application code | Declare providers, controllers, imports, and exports in modules |
| Database access | Call a database client from route or service code | Inject a provider that wraps Prisma Client |
Turn an Express route into a Nest controller
In Express, a route might look like this:
app.get('/users/:id', async (req, res) => {
const user = await usersService.findById(req.params.id);
res.json(user);
});
In Nest, the route is described by decorators on a controller class and method. The method still receives a request parameter and returns data, but Nest maps the URL to it using the decorator metadata.

import { Controller, Get, Param } from '@nestjs/common';
import { UsersService } from './users.service';
@Controller('users')
export class UsersController {
constructor(private readonly usersService: UsersService) {}
@Get(':id')
findOne(@Param('id') id: string) {
return this.usersService.findById(id);
}
}
@Controller('users') supplies the route prefix; @Get(':id') maps the method to a GET route with an id parameter. The controller owns HTTP request handling and delegates the lookup to a provider. It is not simply an Express router with annotations: Nest must register the controller in a module before it becomes part of the application. See NestJS controllers.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Put application logic in injectable providers
A provider is a dependency Nest can construct and inject. Services, repositories, factories, and helpers can all be providers. For an Express developer, a service is a natural home for the work that a route handler should delegate rather than perform itself.
import { Injectable } from '@nestjs/common';
@Injectable()
export class UsersService {
findById(id: string) {
// Application or data-access logic belongs here.
}
}
Register the service in the module’s providers list so Nest can resolve it for the controller. Nest’s guidance is to keep controllers focused on requests and responses, delegating more complex work to providers. See NestJS providers.

Use modules to compose features and control visibility
A module groups related capabilities. Its @Module() metadata can declare controllers and providers, import other modules, and export providers for other modules to use. Providers are module-scoped by default; importing a module makes its exported providers available to the importing module.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsimport { Module } from '@nestjs/common';
import { UsersController } from './users.controller';
import { UsersService } from './users.service';
import { PrismaModule } from '../prisma/prisma.module';
@Module({
imports: [PrismaModule],
controllers: [UsersController],
providers: [UsersService],
})
export class UsersModule {}
Here, UsersModule imports the module that will export the Prisma provider, registers its controller, and registers the service that the controller injects. This explicit composition replaces the looser pattern of importing and calling functions wherever needed. See NestJS modules.

Keep Express-style middleware where it fits
Nest middleware runs before a route handler, can access request and response objects, and can call next() to continue. It can be a function or an injectable class. Class middleware is configured through a module’s configure() method; app-level middleware can be attached with app.use().
There are two practical migration details. First, middleware signatures and behavior can differ between the Express and Fastify adapters, so adapter-specific assumptions should not be carried over blindly. Second, middleware attached globally through app.use() cannot access Nest’s dependency-injection container. Use module-bound class middleware when it needs injected dependencies. See NestJS middleware.

Expose Prisma Client through a Nest provider
Nest is database-agnostic. Its Prisma integration does not require a Nest-specific Prisma package: generate Prisma Client from your schema, wrap it in a provider, and export that provider from a dedicated module. Feature modules can then import the Prisma module and inject the service instead of constructing a client independently. The official NestJS Prisma recipe also covers environment configuration and lifecycle hooks.

A minimal structural outline is:
import { Injectable } from '@nestjs/common';
import { PrismaClient } from '@prisma/client';
@Injectable()
export class PrismaService extends PrismaClient {}
// prisma.module.ts
import { Module } from '@nestjs/common';
@Module({
providers: [PrismaService],
exports: [PrismaService],
})
export class PrismaModule {}
Then inject PrismaService into an application provider such as UsersService and use it for data access. The exact client construction and generated-client import can vary with the Prisma major version and project configuration, so treat this as the Nest dependency-injection shape, not a complete version-specific installation recipe.

Check your Prisma major version before following setup commands
Prisma setup is version-sensitive. Prisma’s current documentation index identifies ORM 8 as the current release and ORM 7 as supported; the Nest integration guide documents ORM 7 requirements. In particular, Prisma ORM 7 requires a database driver adapter or an Accelerate URL to instantiate Prisma Client. Check the guide for your installed major version before copying commands or client initialization code from an older example: Prisma’s NestJS integration guide, Prisma ORM 7 overview, and Prisma documentation index.
Changing from Express to Nest does not require changing ORM: Prisma’s REST API guidance lists both Express and NestJS as supported frameworks. The framework determines how you organize HTTP handling and dependency composition; Prisma Client remains the database access layer. See Prisma’s REST API patterns.
