The “wombat” in this story is not an animal but ANSTO’s Wombat neutron powder diffractometer, an instrument used to investigate structures inside materials.
What does “Wombat” have to do with cement and batteries?
Wombat is the name of a high-intensity neutron powder diffractometer at ANSTO, Australia’s nuclear science and technology organisation. ANSTO names several of its large research instruments after Australian fauna. The instrument measures diffraction patterns that researchers use to determine the atomic structure of powdered materials.

In a 17 January 2018 Chemistry World profile, Peterson described Wombat as enabling fast measurements and real-time observation of atomic-resolution structures. She said a diffraction pattern that once took a week could be obtained in seconds. That comparison is her account in the 2018 profile, not a current independent performance test. The profile also quoted her saying Wombat was the fastest instrument of its kind when installed; that historical claim does not establish a current ranking.

How did cement research lead Peterson toward batteries?
Peterson’s PhD concerned cement chemistry and structure. She was dissatisfied with an approximate model of cement’s structure and, working with neutron specialist Brett Hunter, investigated cement powders using neutron powder diffraction alongside laboratory X-ray and synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The profile quotes her reflecting that the work revealed both that the existing description was incorrect and that cement’s structure was complicated.
#1 Best Overall
These techniques were complementary approaches to understanding structure; the profile does not present them as interchangeable or rank them. The broader connection to batteries is the materials-science question behind the work: a material’s structure is related to its properties and function. Learning how to select appropriate methods and expertise could inform later investigations of very different materials.
What did the battery research examine?
Peterson’s later work, as described in the profile, used neutron powder diffraction to study functional energy materials, including rechargeable battery electrodes and prototype sodium-ion batteries. Researchers could observe how electrode atomic structures changed during charge and discharge, when the materials were not at equilibrium. The profile also describes comparing the mechanisms of prototype sodium-ion electrodes with lithium-ion counterparts.

That is a research account, not evidence that the work produced a commercial battery or demonstrated a market advantage for sodium-ion technology. The cement and batteries mark different stages and applications in Peterson’s materials research; cement was not converted into batteries.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIs this the same as making batteries out of cement?
No. Cement-based energy storage is a separate research direction. A later review describes it as an emerging field with performance and scalability challenges, while a 2025 paper on carbon-cement supercapacitors represents another distinct development. Neither changes what the 2018 profile covered: Peterson’s work using diffraction to study cement structure and functional energy materials, including battery electrodes.
