The effect came from dichroic gold nanoparticles in a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanocomposite—not from a drink’s temperature.
How does the gold nanoparticle cup change colour?
The cup’s appearance depends on how it is illuminated and viewed. Chemistry World reported that the prototype appeared brown and opaque in one condition and purple and transparent in another. The effect was attributed to dichroic gold nanoparticles, whose optical appearance varies with lighting, dispersed in a printable PVA nanocomposite ink. It is therefore different from thermochromic drinkware that changes colour when a cold beverage cools it.

How was the prototype made?
In its 31 October 2018 report, Chemistry World described work by researchers at Wageningen University. Lars Kool, Anton Bunschoten, Aldrik Velders and Vittorio Saggiomo used a modified Turkevich method to make larger, elongated gold nanoparticles, then combined them with PVA to create a printable nanocomposite ink. The cup was a modern interpretation of the lighting-dependent optical effect associated with the Lycurgus Cup.

Is the gold-nanoparticle cup available to buy?
The cited report describes a research prototype, not a mass-market product, and does not establish commercial availability. It also does not establish food-contact safety or repeated-use durability, so the demonstration should not be treated as a cup suitable for drinking. Chemistry World proposed artists’ materials and optical filters as possible application areas; these were prospective uses, not confirmed commercial deployments.
