How to Prevent Cracks in MOF Membranes: What the Evidence Shows

Crack prevention in metal–organic framework (MOF) membranes depends on the framework, support and fabrication route. In a 2026 MOF-801 study, researchers combined a hydroxyl-rich nano-TiO2 support interlayer, nanoseed-induced secondary growth and a Span80 post-treatment to limit cracks that formed during drying. That result is a specific laboratory method—not a universal recipe for making every MOF membrane crack-free.

Why cracks matter in MOF membranes

A MOF membrane separates substances through a selective layer. Cracks and other defects can create nonselective paths through or around that layer, undermining separation even when the MOF crystals themselves have the desired pores. Reviews of MOF membrane fabrication discuss defect control as a central challenge in producing continuous layers (Chemical Society Reviews, 2022).

“Cracks” can refer to different problems: large fissures that appear as a layer dries, gaps between neighboring crystals, pinholes, or poor attachment between the layer and its support. These defects have different causes, so a treatment aimed at one should not be assumed to fix the others. Nor are such defects the same as deliberately introduced missing linkers within a MOF crystal, a separate structural feature examined in the 2026 MOF-801 paper.

What the 2026 MOF-801 study did

The 2026 Nature Communications study, “Precise regulation of missing linkers in MOF pervaporation membranes for desalination of hypersaline waters,” reported a crack-free MOF-801 layer made through a combination of support modification, seeded growth and post-treatment (Nature Communications, 2026).

1. Modify the ceramic support

The researchers placed a hydrophilic nano-TiO2 interlayer on the ceramic support. They describe its hydroxyl-rich surface as providing more sites for MOF nucleation. The aim was to improve conditions for growth and attachment at the support surface—not to treat cracks after they had formed.

2. Grow the MOF layer from seeds

The team used nanoseed-induced secondary growth. The reported MOF-801 seeds were approximately 69 nm in size. Seeded growth is intended to help crystals develop and intergrow into a continuous layer; it does not, by itself, establish that every grain boundary or pinhole is eliminated.

  • LONG-LIFE: The membrane element, shipped dry in an original sealed package, has a life expectancy between 24 to 36 months, based on average feedwater quality, temperature, and incoming water pressure.

3. Slow solvent loss during drying

The authors attributed macroscopic cracks between intergrown MOF-801 crystals to capillary stress during solvent evaporation after membrane growth. They soaked the membrane in a Span80/chloroform solution for two days. Their explanation is that Span80 slowed evaporation of residual DMF and formic acid, reducing the stress that could open cracks as the layer dried. This is a preventive post-growth treatment in the reported process, not evidence that Span80 repairs an already cracked membrane.

The resulting membrane layer was approximately 1.67 μm thick, and the reported characterization showed no macroscopic intracrystalline cracks. The paper states: “To address this issue, a surfactant (Span80) posttreatment was employed to effectively avoid the formation of cracks.” That statement refers to the authors’ MOF-801 method and conditions.

  • STERILE INDIVIDUAL PACKAGE: Membrane filter disc filters sterilized by 25 kGrey gamma radiation, sterile-sealed without protective paper, placed on a band in individual packages. This special setting ensures each membrane filter will stay perfectly flat when they are dispensed.

What the reported results do—and do not—show

In the study’s comparison, Span80 treatment did not significantly change the measured pore size or specific surface area. The authors also reported complete salt rejection and stable operation under their tested desalination conditions, as well as favorable water flux compared with selected silica, MOF and zeolite membrane comparators.

Those findings are experimental results for the reported membrane and test conditions. They do not establish commercial readiness, long-term performance in every application, or that Span80 will produce equivalent results with another MOF, support or solvent system. A membrane that looks continuous under microscopy also needs separation testing: visual inspection alone cannot establish that transport is selective.

How crack-control approaches differ

MOF membrane fabrication reviews describe multiple routes, including in situ solvothermal growth, seed-mediated secondary growth, electrophoretic deposition, counter-diffusion, liquid-phase epitaxy and solvent-free synthesis. A review of fabrication methods emphasizes that varied MOF chemistries and synthesis conditions make a universal process impractical (2024 fabrication review; Nature Nanotechnology, 2022).

Intervention Where it acts Potential defect target Key qualification
Support-surface modification Surface chemistry and texture where MOF growth begins Nucleation, coverage and potentially adhesion The nano-TiO2 example is specific to the reported MOF-801/ceramic system.
Seed-mediated secondary growth Crystal nucleation and layer development Incomplete intergrowth or uneven coverage Seeding does not by itself prove the absence of pinholes or grain-boundary voids.
Precursor-delivery routes, including counter-diffusion How metal and linker precursors reach the growing layer Growth uniformity and continuity Compatibility depends on the MOF chemistry, support and process conditions.
Post-growth drying treatment Solvent evaporation and stresses as the layer dries Macroscopic drying cracks The two-day Span80/chloroform treatment is reported for MOF-801, not validated as a general method.
Solid metal precursors Precursor supply during layer formation Cracks or voids and attachment to porous supports A review describes this as an explored approach, not a universal solution or proof of superiority (2025 review).

Other routes, such as electrophoretic deposition and liquid-phase epitaxy, change how a layer is formed rather than targeting the same drying mechanism as the Span80 treatment. Choosing among them requires matching the intervention to the defect and considering practical constraints such as solvent and reagent use, temperature, substrate geometry, reproducibility and scale-up. The available review evidence does not establish one route as best for every framework or crack mechanism.

How to assess a crack-control method

  1. Identify the defect. Establish whether the problem is a macroscopic drying crack, an intercrystalline gap, a pinhole or poor adhesion. Do not treat these as interchangeable.
  2. Locate the likely cause. Consider support surface chemistry and texture, nucleation and growth, precursor delivery, and stresses during drying.
  3. Match the intervention to the material pair. Evaluate it for the specific MOF, support, solvent and fabrication route; success with MOF-801 on a modified ceramic does not establish transferability.
  4. Check continuity and separation together. Characterize defects and test the membrane’s relevant gas or liquid transport. A visually intact layer is not sufficient evidence of selective performance.
  5. Account for process constraints. Compare temperature, solvent and reagent requirements, substrate shape, repeatability and scale-up needs alongside defect control.
