The latter can block more than the request that triggered it. Treat the pipeline as a security-sensitive policy system, not simply a log parser that adds IP addresses to a blocklist.
What the pipeline does—and what it does not do
A WAF inspects web or API requests and applies rules to request attributes. Cloudflare’s documentation describes its own WAF this way; its detection documentation also distinguishes identifying or scoring traffic from mitigating it: detection alone does not block traffic unless a rule is configured. Those are provider-specific descriptions, but they illustrate the important boundary.

A Linux firewall acts at a lower layer. Netfilter describes nftables as the successor to iptables, with configurable hooks, sets, and packet classification. A firewall rule can match traffic by address and take an action on packets; it does not know which HTTP path, header, or request signature caused a decision upstream.
| Stage | What it observes or decides | Scope of its action |
|---|---|---|
| Access-log reader | Records written by the web server, subject to the actual log format | Supplies evidence to the detector; it does not itself block traffic |
| WAF-style detector and policy | HTTP request attributes or a policy decision derived from them | Can identify a request as suspicious; detection does not automatically mean mitigation |
| Kernel packet filter | Network packets matching configured rules or sets | A matching address ban can affect traffic beyond the triggering HTTP request |
The critical translation is therefore not “bad request becomes bad packet.” It is “a policy decides that the observed client address should be blocked.” That translation is useful, but broader than a request-level action: other requests, connections, or services reached through the same address may also be affected.

What is documented about the named C implementation
An indexed Reddit post describes a self-hosted project called Linux Log Guardian with a flow of Nginx access log → parser → OWASP CRS with PCRE2 JIT → policy engine → XDP/ipset enforcement. The post also reports a median ban latency of approximately 26 ms. These are the post author’s claims, not independently verified findings about the project’s code or a reproducible benchmark.
That description does not establish that the implementation uses nftables. Netfilter and Ubuntu documentation establish general nftables and packet-filter behavior, not the project’s backend. The available evidence also does not establish how the program handles log rotation, partial or malformed records, proxy-derived client addresses, ban expiration, reversals, or restart recovery. Do not assume those behaviors from the architecture sketch.

A sound single-process design separates the decisions
Putting the stages in one executable can simplify deployment, but it should not collapse their responsibilities. Keep the data flow explicit so that a parsing error cannot silently become a firewall action and so that policy can be audited independently of log ingestion.
Recommended Free Tools
- Ingest: read the configured web-server access log. Define the log format and how the reader detects newly written records; the cited material does not establish the named project’s format or rotation strategy.
- Parse and validate: turn a complete record into structured fields and reject records that are incomplete, malformed, or lack a trustworthy client address. A parse failure should be visible and should not create a ban.
- Establish address provenance: decide whether the address comes directly from the connection or from proxy-related log fields. Only accept forwarded client-address data from explicitly trusted proxies; the project’s proxy policy is not documented in the available account.
- Detect: evaluate request evidence using the configured detection rules. Keep a distinction between a detection or score and a mitigation decision; Cloudflare’s documentation explicitly notes that detections do not mitigate without a configured rule.
- Apply policy: decide whether the event warrants a network-level ban, including its scope and duration. The sources do not specify whether Linux Log Guardian uses request signatures, aggregate thresholds, or both, nor how it reviews false positives.
- Enforce: send an idempotent update to the chosen firewall backend. Track which rules or set entries belong to this process so that updates, expiry, and removal do not disturb unrelated firewall policy.
- Record outcome: log the detection, policy decision, enforcement result, and later removal as distinct events. This makes it possible to distinguish “detected,” “ban requested,” and “kernel rule applied.”
This is a design pattern, not a verified description of Linux Log Guardian. In particular, the Reddit post names XDP/ipset rather than nftables; choose and document the backend actually supported by the implementation rather than treating these mechanisms as interchangeable labels.

Understand the consequence of a kernel drop
Ubuntu’s nftables documentation describes the drop verdict as terminating processing of the packet within the Linux networking subsystem with no further action. It is a terminal outcome for matching traffic. By contrast, accept ends processing in the current base chain, but a later base chain may still drop the packet. A successful accept at one point is therefore not necessarily the final outcome across all configured chains.
Because the firewall rule is keyed to network traffic rather than the original HTTP request, an address-level ban can be overbroad. A shared or changing address may represent multiple users or services; the materials here do not quantify that risk, so the system’s policy should make the scope explicit and provide a way to inspect and reverse a decision.

Keep kernel-changing privileges behind a clear boundary
The Linux kernel threat model states that users without explicitly granted elevated capabilities may not alter kernel configuration, memory, or state. A process that changes firewall state therefore needs privileged authority for that operation. This general statement does not establish that every firewall operation requires CAP_SYS_ADMIN specifically; do not infer that narrower capability requirement from the quoted threat-model passage.
For a single-process design, treat log parsing and detection as untrusted-input handling, and isolate the authority used for firewall changes as narrowly as the system permits. Document what privilege the enforcement backend actually needs, restrict access to the log and control interfaces, and ensure that malformed input cannot be interpreted as an enforcement command. The cited sources establish the privilege boundary in general, not the exact privilege set or safety controls of the named project.

Questions to answer before relying on an implementation
- Input correctness: What exact access-log format is supported? What happens on partial writes, truncation, rotation, and malformed lines?
- Client identity: How is the client IP determined behind reverse proxies or load balancers, and which proxy sources are trusted?
- Decision policy: Is a ban triggered by one signature, an aggregate threshold, or both? How are false positives reviewed?
- Reversibility: Are bans temporary? How do expiry, duplicate events, explicit unban, and restart recovery work?
- Firewall ownership: Which backend is actually used—nftables, ipset/iptables, XDP, or another mechanism? How are existing rules preserved and updates made idempotently?
- Privileges: What authority is required for enforcement, and can parsing and detection operate without the rights used to change firewall state?
- Performance claims: What interval does a latency figure measure, under what load and hardware, on which kernel, and with what sample size and distribution?
The available description of Linux Log Guardian does not answer these implementation questions. Its approximately 26 ms median is an author-reported figure without independently established test conditions; it should not be treated as a general latency expectation or a verified performance result.
Do not confuse packet logging with access-log ingestion
The Debian nftables manual describes NFLOG as a mechanism that sends matching packets through nfnetlink_log to a userspace subscriber. Logging is non-terminating: it records a match but does not itself make the packet-drop decision. This documents packet logging, not how a web server delivers its access log to a C process. The two paths can coexist, but one is not evidence about the other.
