Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →If your Windows 11 build includes Microsoft’s new Context Menu settings, right-click a file, choose Customize menu, then open Settings > Personalization > Context Menu. There you can choose which app extensions appear in the main menu or its submenu, or hide the submenu. Microsoft announced this experience as an Insider rollout in August 2026; it is not established as available on every stable Windows 11 PC.
Try this supported, user-facing route first:
- In File Explorer, right-click a file and look at the bottom of the context menu for Customize menu.
- If it appears, select it to open the Context Menu settings page. You can also navigate to Settings > Personalization > Context Menu.
- Use the app-extensibility controls to choose which app extensions appear in the main menu and which appear in the submenu. You can also hide the submenu.
Microsoft described these controls in its [August 17, 2026 Windows Insider announcement]. Its [Shell extension guidance] also describes the Context Menu settings experience. The announcement says the experience was beginning to roll out to Windows Insiders; it does not establish that the settings are available to all Windows 11 users. If you do not see Customize menu or the Context Menu page, the feature may not have reached your build.

These controls change where app extensions are shown, not whether the app itself is installed. Hiding the submenu does not uninstall an app or remove its underlying Shell handler. Controls for built-in Windows file actions and command placement are separate from app-extension visibility.

Why an app command may appear only under Show more options
Windows 11 supports both the newer context menu and the older menu. In Microsoft’s developer guidance, extensions built with IExplorerCommand and package identity can appear in the modern menu. Older extensions that use IContextMenu appear in the classic menu, which you can open with Show more options. That distinction explains why an app command may be present even when it is absent from the first menu. See Microsoft’s [context-menu extension guidance] and its [2021 explanation of Show more options], which also notes Shift+F10 and the keyboard menu key as ways to open the older menu.

Shell handler registration
App developers or advanced administrators
Registers an extension for a file type or Shell object
Registry and in-process COM changes are app-specific and can affect Explorer stability.
How classic Shell handler registration works
For developers, Microsoft documents shortcut-menu handlers registered against a file type’s ProgID or a predefined Shell object. The documented registry pattern is HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT<ProgID>ShellExContextMenuHandlers<handler>; the handler subkey identifies the extension’s CLSID. Predefined scopes include * for all files, AllFileSystemObjects for files and folders, Folder, Directory, and DirectoryBackground. The scope determines which objects can receive the command. Microsoft’s [context-menu handler documentation] explains the registration model.
After registration changes, Microsoft recommends notifying the Shell with SHChangeNotify and SHCNE_ASSOCCHANGED. Without notification, the Shell may not recognize the change until a reboot. This is developer registration guidance, not a safe, universal recipe for deleting a registry key: the responsible app, handler CLSID, and affected scope vary.

Shell extension handlers are in-process COM DLLs loaded by Explorer or another Shell-hosting process. Microsoft warns: “A crash or hang in your extension will crash or hang Explorer for all users.” That caution concerns faulty extension code, not ordinary use of the new Settings visibility controls. Microsoft’s current [Shell extension guidance] recommends manifest-based registration for packaged apps rather than directly writing registry keys and suggests considering simpler approaches when they fit.
