A laboratory plasma jet has produced a brief, localized cooling effect on a solid surface—but it is not a beam that freezes objects or a ready-to-use electronics cooler. In a 2023 account, the University of Virginia said researchers saw a test surface cool by several degrees for a few microseconds before it warmed. They are investigating whether the effect could help manage hot spots in spacecraft and high-altitude aircraft electronics.
What the “freeze ray” is—and is not
The name refers to experimental research into directing a small helium plasma jet at a surface. The project is about on-demand, localized cooling for aerospace electronics, not freezing a room, an object, or an electronic device with a science-fiction-style ray. The University of Virginia described the work as research and prototype development, not an operational cooling system or consumer product.

In July 2023, the university reported that mechanical and aerospace engineering professor Patrick Hopkins was studying the effect with support from a U.S. Air Force award of $750,000 over three years. The lab planned to work with Hopkins’s spinout, Laser Thermal, on prototype fabrication. That report does not establish whether a prototype was later completed or the project’s current status. The experiment sent a helium plasma jet through a hollow needle encased in ceramic and onto a gold-plated surface. Because a contact temperature gauge could be damaged by the plasma, researchers tracked the surface with time-resolved optical thermometry based on thermoreflectance. They observed an initial temperature drop followed by heating.

The university’s account says the researchers associated the brief cooling with the removal of an ultrathin surface layer containing water and carbon molecules. Removing that material takes energy from the surface, in a way the team compared with evaporation. This is the research team’s explanation of the observed effect, not proof that the same mechanism will apply to every material or operating condition. How much cooling did the experiment achieve?
The university reported a drop of several degrees that lasted a few microseconds. That is a short-lived, localized surface effect—not sustained cooling of an electronic component, and not evidence that the technique can remove heat faster than conventional systems in practical use. The team described further investigation of different gases, metals, and surface coatings. University of Virginia School of Engineering and Applied Science

Why study it for spacecraft and aircraft?
Electronics in spacecraft and high-altitude aircraft can be difficult to cool because ordinary air cooling may be limited, while carrying coolant adds mass. The university describes cold plates as a conventional approach: they conduct heat away from electronics to radiators. A targeted plasma jet is being explored as a possible way to address particular hot spots, not as a replacement for cold plates or radiators.
Hopkins summarized the aerospace challenge this way: “A lot of electronics on board heat up, but they have no way to cool down.” He described the proposed targeted jet as “like a laser beam” and “like a lightning bolt”; those comparisons convey its directed, energetic character, not that it is a laser or a freezing beam. How this differs from laser cooling
Another technology sometimes covered with “freeze ray” language is a separate laser-refrigeration experiment. In the University of Washington work reported by IEEE Spectrum, an infrared laser excited ytterbium-doped yttrium lithium fluoride nanocrystals. The nanocrystals emitted photons that carried energy away, cooling a small surrounding liquid volume. This is optical refrigeration of liquid, not the UVA plasma jet’s reported removal of surface-adsorbed material.
| Aspect | UVA plasma research | Laser-cooling demonstration |
|---|---|---|
| Cooling mechanism | Researchers attributed the brief initial cooling to removal of a thin surface layer containing water and carbon species. | Infrared-excited doped nanocrystals emitted photons that carried energy away. |
| Target | A gold-plated solid surface exposed to a helium plasma jet. | A small surrounding liquid sample. |
| Reported scale | Several degrees for a few microseconds, according to the university’s 2023 account. | About 3–4°C in a few microliters, according to IEEE Spectrum’s 2015 report; the report also described roughly one watt of laser power for two milliwatts of cooling. |
| Development described | Research toward improving the effect and planned prototype fabrication, as reported in 2023; later status is not established here. | A laboratory demonstration, not a practical freeze ray. |
The laser-cooled liquid was not frozen. Peter Pauzauskie, the University of Washington chemist quoted in IEEE Spectrum, said: “We’ve not demonstrated freezing water with a laser cooling approach.” IEEE Spectrum, “Freeze Ray! (Almost)”

Is freeze-ray cooling available to buy?
The cited accounts describe laboratory research, research materials, and planned prototype work—not a retail device or an established cooling product. The 2023 University of Virginia report does not establish commercial availability or what happened to the planned prototype afterward. For aerospace electronics, cold plates and radiators remain the conventional systems discussed in the university account; the plasma effect is still an experimental possibility for localized hot spots.
