Its “plus” features include token import and export, search and categories, a dark theme, and optional PIN or biometric protection when opening the app. The key migration caution: F-Droid’s version 3.4 release notes report backup-and-restore issues and advise testing the process on a new device.
What is FreeOTP+?
FreeOTP+ is an Android fork of FreeOTP for generating one-time passwords used as a second step when signing in. It supports HOTP, the counter-based standard in RFC 4226, and TOTP, the time-based standard in RFC 6238. A service must support compatible one-time passwords for its account to work with the app.

You can add a token by scanning a QR code or entering its configuration manually. FreeOTP’s token URI documentation also describes adding a token from an otpauth:// link. The documented URI format is otpauth://TYPE/LABEL?PARAMETERS, where the token type is hotp or totp. The documented default is six digits, with a 30-second period for TOTP, but services can specify other settings; use the configuration supplied by the service rather than assuming every account has identical parameters. See the FreeOTP token URI documentation.
What does the “plus” add?
FreeOTP+ adds organization and convenience features to the core job of generating codes:
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
- Import and export: Move token settings through Google Drive or other document providers.
- Search and categories: Find and group tokens as your list grows.
- Dark theme: Use a darker interface.
- App-launch protection: Require a PIN or biometric authentication when opening the app, if enabled.
These features are documented by the FreeOTP+ project and its F-Droid listing. An app lock protects access to the app itself; it is distinct from the one-time code that a service requests at sign-in.
How do I back up FreeOTP+?
Use FreeOTP+’s export option and select Google Drive or another available document provider as the destination. The exact screens can vary with the Android version and provider, so follow the labels shown in your installed app and confirm that an export file or saved backup is actually present where you expect it.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Do not treat a completed export as proof that restoration will work. F-Droid’s release notes for version 3.4 state: “Users reported issues with the backup & restore functionality, please test this whenever you install the app on a new device.” That is a reported issue and a testing warning, not a claim that every backup fails.
Can I transfer FreeOTP+ to a new phone?
FreeOTP+ provides import and export, but the F-Droid warning means you should verify the complete migration path rather than assume it is dependable. If possible, test with a new device before relying on the backup for account recovery.

- On the current phone, export the token settings to a location you can access from the new phone.
- Install FreeOTP+ on the new phone and use its import option to load the exported settings.
- Check that the expected accounts appear, then test their codes by signing in to the corresponding services while the old phone or another recovery option is still available.
- Keep each service’s separate recovery method available until you have confirmed the migrated codes work.
Some services provide recovery codes or another account-recovery route; keep those separately according to each service’s instructions. Avoid deleting the old installation or giving up other recovery options until the new phone has been checked.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does FreeOTP+ support TOTP?
Yes. TOTP is one of its two supported standards; the other is HOTP. The TOTP code changes according to a time interval, while HOTP is counter-based. A service’s QR code or setup instructions provide the token parameters the authenticator needs. FreeOTP’s token URI documentation says the shared secret must be at least 128 bits and recommends 160 bits; it attributes that requirement to HOTP guidance. That is documentation about provisioning secrets, not an independently measured property of FreeOTP+.

Version, Android requirements, and installation
As listed by F-Droid on October 5, 2026, the current version is 3.4 (build 26), added June 2, 2026, and requires Android 6.0 or newer. The same listing identifies arm64-v8a, armeabi-v7a, x86, and x86_64 support. The project README says Android 5.0+, so the sources differ: for the listed 3.4 build, use F-Droid’s version-specific Android 6.0 minimum rather than assuming the README’s broader figure applies to it.

What is known about privacy and security?
Google Play’s developer-provided data-safety panel declares “No data shared with third parties” and “No data collected.” Google Play says that information is provided by the developer and may vary by use, region, and age; it is a declaration, not an independent privacy audit. The available product information also does not establish an independent security audit of the current FreeOTP+ release, so the app should not be described as independently audited.
