It includes managed hosting, SSL, an AI-guided builder and a free WordPress.com subdomain. That address is not a custom domain: WordPress.com associates custom domains with paid plans. If you want to use WordPress.org software instead, the software is free, but you must arrange hosting and a domain separately.
What “free WordPress” includes
WordPress.com and WordPress.org are different routes. WordPress.org distributes free, open-source WordPress software that you install on a web host. WordPress.com is a hosted service run by Automattic; its free plan supplies the hosting environment and site tools. For a beginner seeking a no-code start with no hosting bill, the hosted plan is the simpler fit. WordPress.org describes the software, while WordPress.com explains its hosted service and plans.

Use the free platform subdomain
The WordPress.com free plan gives you a site address on a WordPress.com subdomain. It can be enough for learning, a personal project or a basic site when a branded address is not essential. It is not the same as owning or using a custom domain.

Choose a custom domain when the address matters
WordPress.com’s cited plan information associates custom domains with paid plans. A self-hosted site also requires you to arrange its domain and configure it for your host. Check current terms before committing: the available sources do not establish a current domain price, renewal cost or permanent free ownership. See WordPress.com’s domain information alongside the plan details.
What SSL does—and does not do
SSL/TLS protects the connection between a visitor’s browser and your site; a working certificate is reflected by an HTTPS address. WordPress.com says SSL is included with its free site. For self-hosted WordPress, HTTPS support is part of WordPress.org’s current recommended requirements. SSL is one part of a site’s protection, not a guarantee that the whole site is secure. WordPress.com explains HTTPS and SSL.

Build a no-code site on WordPress.com
- Sign up and name the site. Choose a site name and the available free WordPress.com subdomain, keeping in mind that it is a platform address rather than a custom domain.
- Choose a theme. Select a starting design suited to the site’s purpose; you can adjust the pages and layout as you build.
- Create the essential pages. Use the block editor to add and arrange text, images and other page elements without writing code. WordPress.org’s getting-started guide also recommends planning the site’s pages and structure.
- Use AI as an optional drafting aid. WordPress.com describes AI assistance for drafting copy, suggesting layouts and writing posts. Review and edit what it produces for accuracy, tone and fit; AI assistance does not establish that content is ready to publish.
- Preview and publish. Check pages and links, confirm the site address, then publish when the content is ready.

Set up self-hosted WordPress without writing code
Self-hosting does not require hand-coding a site, but it does mean choosing a web host and ensuring the server meets WordPress’s requirements. Before buying a plan or installing anything, compare the host’s supported versions with the current WordPress.org requirements. As listed by WordPress.org in 2026, the recommendations are PHP 8.3 or greater, MariaDB 10.11 or greater or MySQL 8.0 or greater, and HTTPS.

- Arrange hosting and a domain. Confirm that the host supports the required software and HTTPS. Hosting providers differ in what they manage or include.
- Install WordPress. Use the host’s installer if it offers one, or follow WordPress.org’s installation guide. The WordPress.org FAQ says installation takes less than five minutes under most circumstances; that estimate is for installation alone, not choosing a domain, designing pages or completing a site.
- Configure the site. Set the site title and address, choose a theme, and build pages with the block editor. The hosting dashboard and available controls depend on your provider.
- Confirm HTTPS. Check that the domain loads over HTTPS and that the host’s certificate setup is working before sharing the site.
Which route should you choose?
- Choose WordPress.com’s free plan if avoiding hosting setup and starting with a free platform subdomain are your priorities.
- Choose self-hosted WordPress.org if you want to select your own host and are willing to arrange the domain, HTTPS and installation. The WordPress software itself is free; hosting and domain arrangements are separate.
- Plan for a paid WordPress.com plan if you want a custom domain on WordPress.com, and check the current plan terms before deciding.
