Free or freemium games let you try a puzzle before spending, but may include ads, optional purchases, subscriptions, or limits on play. Paid games charge upfront and may suit players who prefer a one-time price—but payment alone does not guarantee an ad-free game or rule out extra purchases. Check the individual game’s current App Store or Google Play listing and what it says the game includes.
What “free” and “paid” actually mean
“Free” usually describes the price to download, not the full cost or monetization model. Apple distinguishes free apps with no monetization from ad-supported free apps and freemium apps with optional purchases or subscriptions. A paid app charges once for its functionality; a paymium app combines an upfront price with optional purchases. These labels describe business models, not how enjoyable or fair a particular puzzle game will be. Apple’s business-model overview explains the distinctions.

Look at the game’s purchase options, not just its download button. A game may offer additional levels, boosts, lives, gems, ad-free access, or a subscription. The listing and the game’s own purchase screens are the relevant place to verify what is currently offered.

How to choose between free and paid

This is a decision aid, not a quality ranking. A premium price does not prove better puzzle design, and a free download does not prove a game is worse. Platform rules explain billing and disclosure expectations; they do not establish the value of any individual title.

Understand purchases before spending
Consumables, permanent unlocks, and subscriptions
In-app purchases can work in different ways. Consumables—such as lives or gems—can be used up and purchased again. Non-consumables, such as an extra level pack, do not expire. Subscriptions provide access for a recurring period; an auto-renewing subscription continues until cancelled. Apple says App Store listings identify whether in-app purchases are offered and describes these purchase types in its App Store purchase guidance.
Before buying, identify whether the offer unlocks content permanently, provides a temporary benefit, or renews. Check the price and terms presented for that particular game rather than assuming all purchases work alike.

What Google Play’s billing rules cover
Google Play’s billing policy says paid downloads and most payments for digital features in apps use Google Play billing, subject to listed exceptions. Its examples include extra lives, subscriptions, and ad-free access. The policy also requires accurate pricing information; for randomized paid virtual items, developers must disclose the odds in advance and near the purchase. These are billing and disclosure requirements, not a guarantee that a game’s offers are good value. See Google Play’s payments policy.

- Total cost: Compare the upfront price with any likely ongoing purchases or recurring subscription.
- Ads: Check whether ads appear between puzzles, interrupt play, or are optional to watch for a reward.
- Progress: Find out whether purchases unlock new content, speed progress, or replenish items needed to keep playing.
- Included content: Check what is accessible at download and what requires another purchase or subscription.
- Session fit: Consider whether the game works for short casual sessions or expects longer, more frequent play.
Android Developers’ UX guidance says, “Before people install your app or game, tell them how and when you bill them.” It also cautions: “For example, don’t surprise users with a payment request immediately after your app has loaded, or distract them with ads in the middle of a game level.” Read Android’s monetization guidance as a statement of design expectations—not proof of how any specific game behaves.

Survey figures offer context, but these are not current-market measurements. The 2020 Genre and Great Games Report cited Facebook Mobile Gaming Insights data from Q1 2020: the share of surveyed puzzle players who made an in-app purchase in a month was 6.2% in the US, 5.7% in the UK, 7.4% in Japan, and 6.3% in South Korea.

The same report cited an Interpret survey commissioned by Facebook IQ and fielded in November–December 2019 among adults across 11 markets. In the two markets highlighted in the report, 80% of US puzzle players and 96% of Japanese puzzle players said they were okay with seeing in-app ads. Those figures describe those surveyed players at that time; they do not establish preferences in other countries or today.
