For most exposed-fastener metal roof panels, use the roofing screws and sealing washers specified by the panel manufacturer—not nails as a substitute. Nails do have a place in some metal-roofing assemblies, especially as fasteners for clips or other specified components. The right choice depends on the roof system and its installation instructions.
First identify the roof system
“Metal roofing” covers different attachment methods. The distinction matters because a question about driving a fastener through a panel is not the same as a question about fastening a concealed clip to the roof structure.

Exposed-fastener panels
These panels are attached directly through the panel face into the deck or other support. The heads remain visible on the finished roof. The specified roofing screw and sealing washer form part of the weather-exposed assembly; use the panel maker’s approved fastener, substrate and fastening schedule. Standing-seam panels are commonly retained by clips beneath the raised seams, keeping the main attachment concealed. In this case, “screws vs. nails” often means which fastener secures the clip to its support—not whether to drive a nail through the finished panel. Clip type, spacing and attachment method are system-specific.

When to use screws
For an exposed-fastener panel, use the screw type and sealing washer specified for that panel and installation. The approved combination depends on the panel metal, substrate and exposure; there is no universal screw size, coating, length or placement that can be inferred from the phrase “metal roof.” Follow the product manual and project requirements rather than substituting a generic fastener.
Metal roofing screws with bonded EPDM sealing washers are a product category to look for only when the panel instructions call for that assembly. Match the fastener to the panel, support and corrosion exposure, and confirm its specification before buying.

When nails may be appropriate
Nails are not categorically excluded from metal roofing, but their use is specific to the assembly. The Metal Construction Association’s Metal Roof Installation Manual lists nails among common fastener types and identifies selected applications involving metal-roof installations, underlayment, slip sheets and wood substrates. That does not make a nail a general replacement for a screw through an exposed panel.

For one manufacturer-specific standing-seam example, PREFA’s PREFALZ guidance says its stainless-steel clips may be fastened with nails, screws or rivets. This applies to that specified clip system; it is not a universal instruction for other roofs.

Install exposed screws without compromising the seal
The washer should contact the metal enough to seal, but it should not be crushed. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Building America Solution Center puts it plainly: “The rubber washer in the fastener should seal the metal surface but should not be pressed.” See its metal roof guidance.
- Use the screw and washer approved for the panel system.
- Seat the washer to seal the surface without pressing or deforming it.
- Follow the specified fastener pattern and locations; do not assume one spacing or panel location works for every profile.
Check corrosion compatibility and design requirements
Fastener material and coating must suit the panel metal and the roof’s exposure. Contact between dissimilar metals in the presence of moisture can raise galvanic-corrosion concerns. For standing seam, use the clip and its fastener materials required by the system. For exposed fastening, assess the screw-and-panel combination together rather than selecting a fastener on strength or appearance alone.

Fastener spacing and attachment method are also part of the designed roof assembly. The available guidance does not establish a general performance ranking in which screws always resist uplift better than nails, or vice versa. Use the manufacturer’s fastening schedule and the project’s design requirements; do not transfer a detail from a different panel, clip or substrate.

What to verify before installation
- Identify the panel system and the exact manufacturer’s installation instructions.
- Confirm the approved fastener, washer or clip, including material and coating compatibility.
- Check the substrate and project fastening schedule, including specified spacing and placement.
- For exposed screws, ensure the washer seals without being crushed.
- For standing seam, verify the clip fastening detail rather than applying a through-panel fastening rule.
