To trace a frontend performance issue, reproduce the exact slow load or interaction in Chrome DevTools, record it in the Performance panel, and follow the timeline to the work that delayed it. Local LCP, CLS, and INP help identify what feels wrong; the trace helps distinguish request delays from JavaScript, layout, or rendering work. Use Lighthouse for a broad audit, not as a substitute for tracing a specific event.
1. Make the problem reproducible
Start by turning “the page feels slow” into a repeatable test. Record the route, browser, viewport, device class, exact steps, and whether the issue happens on a first visit or a repeat visit. For an interaction problem, note the click, scroll, typing, or menu action that triggers it.
Keep those conditions consistent when comparing runs: use the same route and action, viewport, cache and storage state, and CPU and network settings. Otherwise, a change in the recording may reflect different test conditions rather than a real improvement.
2. Capture the load or interaction in Chrome DevTools
Open Chrome DevTools and select Performance. Chrome documents separate capture workflows for page loads and runtime interactions; choose the one that matches the symptom in the Chrome DevTools Performance reference.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a page-load issue
- Open the affected page and the Performance panel.
- Select Record and reload to capture a reload and the work that follows it.
- Stop the recording after the page has reached the point where the reported delay is visible.
For a slow interaction, scroll, or animation
- Start a recording in the Performance panel.
- Perform the exact action that reliably causes the slowdown.
- Stop the recording soon after the delay or jank occurs, so the relevant activity is easier to inspect.
Chrome’s live metrics view can show local LCP and CLS; INP is captured when you interact with the page. Treat these as indicators of a symptom, not explanations of its cause. Use the recording to inspect the events behind it. The Performance panel documentation also describes how to compare local measurements with Chrome UX Report field data when it is available.
3. Read the trace for the bottleneck category
Work from the time range where the delay occurred. Use the timeline and related tracks to determine whether the evidence points to request loading, main-thread execution, or rendering. A diagnostic label is a lead to investigate, not proof that a particular issue is the bottleneck.

Late first content or a late largest element
Inspect the Network track and request timings. Then examine relevant Performance insights for clues such as document request latency, render-blocking requests, network dependency chains, LCP breakdown, or late LCP request discovery. These clues help separate a slow response from a resource discovered late or time spent rendering it. The Performance reference explains trace capture and navigation, while Chrome’s Performance insights reference lists the available diagnostic categories.
A slow click or other interaction
Record the interaction itself, then inspect the INP breakdown and main-thread activity around it. Look for scripting, layout, and rendering phases that take time; the interaction tables expose timings and phases that help locate where the delay occurred. A long task near the action is worth investigating, but confirm its relationship to the interaction before attributing the slowdown to it.

Unexpected movement
Inspect CLS and the layout-shift entry in the trace. Check which element moved and when the shift occurred. Performance insights can help identify layout-shift culprits; use the affected element and surrounding events to investigate what changed its position.
Jank during scrolling or animation
Record the runtime behavior and inspect frame and CPU activity during the jank. Look for expensive JavaScript, repeated layout, or paint work. If the trace points to synchronous layout occurring repeatedly, investigate the forced-reflow insight and the code that triggers it.

Repeat visits are still slow
Compare the request behavior and cache state between first and repeat visits. Chrome’s Performance insights include cache-lifetime findings, and Lighthouse can clear storage or retain it depending on the visit you want to model. A test that clears storage does not represent a repeat visit.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.4. Use Lighthouse for an audit, then verify the lead
Lighthouse is useful for a broad page-load audit and a prioritized set of opportunities. Use its findings to choose what to investigate, then inspect the relevant trace, request, or element to understand whether it explains the reproduced problem.

Make the test setup explicit. Lighthouse’s default simulated throttling estimates mobile performance; its advanced DevTools throttling option physically applies CPU and network limits and takes longer. Lighthouse can also clear storage to model a first visit or retain it for a repeat visit. See Chrome’s Lighthouse performance scoring and throttling guidance. A Lighthouse score by itself does not identify the root cause of one specific slow interaction.
5. Choose the tool that answers the question
| Tool | Best for | What it shows | Important limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chrome Performance panel | Explaining a reproduced load or runtime symptom | CPU and network timeline, local Web Vitals, and trace-linked insights | A local trace reflects the tested device, browser, cache, and network conditions. |
| Lighthouse | A broad page-load audit and potential optimizations | Audit metrics, opportunities, device selection, and throttling modes | Default simulated throttling estimates mobile performance rather than physically slowing the browser. |
| Network panel or Performance Network track | Finding slow, blocked, or dependency-linked requests | Request waterfall and timing details; trace requests can be opened in Network | A request delay alone may not explain time spent on the main thread or rendering. |
| Firefox DevTools | Reproducing and analyzing an issue in Firefox | Performance analysis of responsiveness, JavaScript, and layout; Network Monitor requests; Responsive Design Mode device and network behavior | Browser implementations and views differ, so confirm browser-specific problems in the affected browser. |
For Firefox-specific investigation, see Mozilla’s Performance tool documentation, Network Monitor documentation, and Responsive Design Mode documentation.
6. Interpret local measurements alongside field data
A local trace tells you what happened in your particular test. Field data describes real-user experiences collected over a period of time and may be available by device category. Chrome DevTools can compare local results with Chrome UX Report data and show its collection period and device category when available. The two views answer different questions: use the trace to investigate a reproduced event, and field data to see how that local result relates to reported user experience. Field data may not be available for every page or category; see the Chrome Performance documentation.
7. Use insights as investigation leads
Chrome’s Performance insights cover categories including CSS selector costs, document request latency, duplicated JavaScript, font display, forced reflow, image delivery, INP breakdown, layout-shift culprits, LCP breakdown and request discovery, legacy JavaScript, network dependency trees, DOM size, render-blocking requests, third parties, and cache lifetimes. Verify a finding against the trace and source code before treating it as the cause; an insight identifies something to examine, not necessarily the user’s bottleneck.
Use the Insights tab within the Performance panel. The older standalone Chrome Performance Insights panel was deprecated and removed starting with Chrome 132; Chrome’s documentation for that panel points to the current Performance panel experience.
