For a free VPN download for Mac, get the app from the provider’s official macOS page or its Mac App Store listing, then follow that app’s installation instructions. Free plans differ: they may limit data or server choice, require an account, or include ads. Proton VPN and Avira VPN illustrate those differences, but the available descriptions do not establish which service is fastest or most private.
How to download and install a VPN on a Mac
Use the provider’s own download page or the Mac App Store listing, and check that the app supports your Mac before installing. The steps vary by app. For Proton VPN, the provider describes this process:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Sign up for a free account on Proton’s website.
- Download the macOS distribution appropriate for your device.
- Open the downloaded DMG file and drag the app into the Applications folder.
- Open the app, sign in, and connect.
Proton says free-plan users are automatically connected to a server from its listed free locations. Apple’s Apple Platform Security says VPN services typically need minimal setup on Mac and describes supported approaches including IKEv2/IPsec and SSL-VPN through an appropriate App Store client. That platform guidance does not identify which protocol a particular consumer VPN uses.
How free Mac VPN plans differ
“Free” does not mean the same package across services. Compare data allowances, server selection, account requirements, ads, and paid-plan terms before choosing. The figures below come from provider pages or App Store listings, not independent testing.

What to check before choosing
- Data allowance: Work out whether a monthly cap fits your usual use. A small allowance may be enough for occasional browsing but can run out quickly with video or large downloads.
- Server choice: Check whether you can select a location or whether the app assigns one automatically.
- Signup and interruptions: See whether registration is required and whether ads or reconnect prompts affect use.
- Paid-plan terms: Review what is included in the free tier and what changes if the provider prompts you to upgrade.
- Privacy evidence: Treat statements such as “no logs” as provider claims unless supported by suitable independent evidence, such as an audit. An App Store listing’s privacy disclosures are not the same as independent verification.
What these descriptions do—and do not—establish
Plan details can help you understand practical limits, but they do not show that one VPN is faster, more secure, or more private than another. The cited descriptions do not provide a controlled comparison, independent speed test, or comparative privacy audit. Check the provider’s current macOS compatibility and free-plan terms before downloading, since features and availability can change.
