If your Motorola Razr opens normally, reset it from Settings. If you cannot reach Settings, use Recovery mode. A factory reset erases data stored on the phone; a force reboot can fix a freeze without deleting it. Before erasing, back up what matters and make sure you know the Google account previously synced to the Razr.
Choose the right kind of reset

Before you factory reset your Razr
- Back up photos, files, contacts, messages and anything else you want to keep. A factory reset is not a backup method.
- Confirm you know the username and password for the Google account previously used on the phone. Android may ask for that account during setup to verify ownership.
- If you recently changed your Google password, Motorola advises waiting 24 hours before resetting.
- Charge the phone before starting. Motorola specifies at least 30% for its external reset procedure; use that as a conservative preparation target if you are resetting from Settings and do not have model-specific guidance.
- If you are giving the phone to someone else, remove the screen lock and Google account before resetting. This helps avoid leaving Factory Reset Protection linked to your account and blocking the new owner’s setup.
Reset from Settings when the phone opens normally
Motorola’s general instructions for Android 9 through Android 15 give this path: Settings > System > (Advanced) > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset). Follow the prompts to confirm. The exact wording can vary by Razr generation and Android version; on Motorola’s 2019 Razr guide for Android 10, the path is Settings > System > Advanced > Reset options > Erase all data (factory reset).

Use Recovery mode if Settings is unavailable
Motorola’s external reset instructions warn that everything on the device is deleted. Button behavior and menu names can differ across Razr models, so stop if your screen does not match and consult the guide for your exact generation.
- Charge the phone to at least 30%, then turn it off.
- Hold Volume Down and Power together until the phone starts.
- Use Volume Down to highlight Recovery mode, then press Power.
- If an Android robot with a red exclamation mark appears, hold Power and press and release Volume Up to display the menu.
- Use the volume keys to highlight Wipe data/factory reset, then press Power.
- Highlight Factory data reset and press Power to confirm.
- When the reset finishes, highlight Reboot system now and press Power.
Motorola’s External Reset instructions contain the same general warning and sequence; verify the recovery steps against the support page for your exact Razr model if the phone presents different options.

If you forgot the screen lock
Motorola’s guidance for a forgotten PIN, pattern or password is to erase the phone and set it up again. A factory reset does not bypass account verification: when Android asks during setup, enter the Google account that was previously synced to the Razr. If you cannot access that account, resolve the account-access issue before resetting where possible; otherwise you may be unable to finish setup afterward.

If the Razr is frozen, try a force reboot first
For an unresponsive phone that you do not want to erase, hold the Power button for 10–20 seconds to force a reboot. Motorola says this restarts the phone without deleting its data. If the phone remains unusable and you need to erase it, use the Settings or Recovery method above, as available.

Why exact Razr model matters
“Motorola Razr” covers multiple generations, and both menu wording and recovery behavior can vary. Motorola’s general reset page covers Android 9–15, while its 2019 Razr guide documents a specific Android 10 path. If a menu item or button sequence is missing on your phone, check the user guide for the exact Razr generation and software version rather than guessing at another model’s steps.
