If an XLSX converter returns blank cells for totals even though the workbook contains formulas, it may be reading stored formula results that are missing rather than calculating the formulas itself. Open the workbook in a spreadsheet app, recalculate it, save it, and try the conversion again. This is a likely explanation, not a confirmed diagnosis: the converter and workbook settings are not identified.
Why formula cells can look blank to a converter
An Excel formula and the value produced by calculating that formula are distinct. Microsoft describes calculation as “the process of computing formulas and then displaying the results as values in the cells that contain the formulas.” A converter might evaluate formulas, read their stored results, or expose the formula text; its behavior depends on the product and its configuration. If it reads stored results and the workbook has no cached result for a formula cell, the converter may return a blank.

For a concrete example of this distinction, the Python library openpyxl has a data_only option: when enabled, formula cells expose the value stored the last time Excel read the sheet, rather than the formula itself. That illustrates one possible reader behavior; it does not establish how an unnamed converter works. See openpyxl’s documentation on reading an existing workbook.

Excel workbooks can use automatic calculation, manual calculation, or recalculation before saving. The workbook retains the calculation option selected by its author. With manual calculation, formula results may not refresh until someone explicitly calculates the workbook. Microsoft explains how to change formula recalculation options and how to recalculate formulas.

- Transfer speeds up to 100MB/s: Based on internal testing, performance may vary depending upon the host device, interface, and usage conditions. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes
- Plug and Play: Widely compatible with USB Type-C smartphones, tablets, laptops, Macs, and traditional Type-A devices, no software installation required. The 360° swivel design allows for easy switching between connectors without the hassle of losing a cap
- Durable & Compact: The Lexar D40E USB memory stick features a metal enclosure, withstands temperatures from 0° to 50° C (32°F to 122°F), and is lightweight at 26g with dimensions of 70.4 x 16.9 x 11.7mm
- Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty
- Make a copy of the XLSX file. Work on the copy so you can preserve the original if recalculation or saving changes workbook content.
- Open the copy in Excel and check its calculation setting. If calculation is manual, switch to automatic if appropriate for the workbook, or explicitly calculate it. Use Formulas > Calculate Now to recalculate, then save the workbook.
- Retry the conversion. Check whether the converted totals now appear. Compare at least one known total in Excel with the corresponding converted value.
- If Excel is unavailable, use LibreOffice Calc. Open the copy and choose Data > Calculate > Recalculate Hard, then save a copy and retry. LibreOffice says this forces recalculation of formula cells, including non-volatile formulas, even when no new input event occurred: LibreOffice’s Recalculate Hard documentation.
If recalculation does not fix the blanks
A recalculated workbook can still produce blank output if the converter does not support the formulas involved or relies on stored results that were not saved as expected. The converter’s name, version, settings, workbook calculation mode, and formula types are not established here, so a product-specific diagnosis is not possible.
- Find out what the converter reads. Check its documentation or settings to determine whether it evaluates formulas, reads cached results, or returns formula text.
- Check formula and link support. Look for documented support for the functions used in the totals and for formulas that depend on external workbooks or links. Do not assume that support for XLSX files means support for every formula or workbook feature.
- Test a known total. Compare a small, verified total in Excel or Calc with the output from the converter. Recalculation is a useful diagnostic and recovery step, but a successful conversion of one total does not prove that every formula is supported or that other workbook features are preserved.
- Check the saved copy. Confirm that the spreadsheet app saved the recalculated workbook before you retry the conversion.
When choosing or configuring a converter, the practical questions are whether it recalculates formulas or only reads stored results, whether it supports the workbook’s formulas and external links, and whether it saves updated results while preserving the workbook features you need. The relevant documentation distinguishes formula calculation from reading stored values, but the converter itself must be identified to answer those questions for a particular file. See Microsoft’s calculation-options guidance and openpyxl’s workbook-reading guidance.
