Neither should be treated as a complete event-registration or attendance system. If you need automated reminders and replay follow-up, check the automation available on the specific paid plan you would use before building the campaign.
How the two free plans compare
Kit was formerly called ConvertKit. Its current Free plan documentation describes a $0 plan for accounts below 10,000 subscribers, with up to 10,000 email subscribers, unlimited broadcasts, forms and landing pages, plus tagging and segmentation. Mailchimp’s Free Marketing plan lists a smaller contact ceiling and explicit monthly and daily sending limits.

| Campaign requirement | Kit Free | Mailchimp Free Marketing |
|---|---|---|
| Free audience limit | Up to 10,000 email subscribers; $0 while below 10,000 subscribers, according to Kit’s plan documentation. | Up to 250 contacts, according to Mailchimp’s Free plan documentation. |
| Email sending limit | Unlimited broadcasts, according to Kit’s plan documentation. | 500 sends per month and no more than 250 sends per day, according to Mailchimp’s Free plan documentation. |
| Signup forms and landing pages | Unlimited forms and landing pages are listed on Free by Kit. | Forms and landing pages are available as marketing tools; see Mailchimp’s embedded-form guide and landing-page guide. |
| Automated reminder or replay sequence | Visual automations and the automation template library are listed for Creator and Creator Pro, not Free, by Kit. | Automation access varies by plan. Classic automations can be created only by paid accounts that previously created a classic automation; see Mailchimp’s automation documentation. |
| Signup-source tagging and segmentation | Tagging and segmentation are listed on Free by Kit. | Embedded forms can apply tags to identify signup source, according to Mailchimp’s form guide. |
| Page URL and branding | Not stated in the cited Kit plan documentation. | Free landing pages use a randomly generated identifier; using a verified email domain in the identifier is a paid-plan feature. Free embedded forms must include the Mailchimp Referral badge, per Mailchimp’s landing-page guide and form guide. |

What each platform can do in a training signup journey
Capture registrations
Both services provide a way to collect email signups. Mailchimp’s embedded signup forms can be placed on a website and can tag subscribers by signup source. It also hosts landing pages. Kit lists unlimited forms and landing pages on Free. These tools can collect a name and email address and support a campaign list, but a signup form alone does not confirm attendance or manage an event.

Manage the registration list
Tags and segments help distinguish training registrants from other subscribers, so invitations, reminders and post-training messages can target the intended group. Kit lists tagging and segmentation on Free. Mailchimp supports signup-source tags on embedded forms. Check how each service handles consent, duplicate signups and existing subscribers in your account before importing or collecting contacts.
Send invitations and follow-up
A one-time invitation or broadcast is different from an automated series. Kit lists unlimited broadcasts on Free, but lists visual automations and automation templates on paid plans. Mailchimp’s automation access varies by plan, and its documentation limits classic automation creation to paid accounts that previously created one. Do not build a timed reminder-and-replay journey on the assumption that it is included in either free plan.
Choose based on your campaign size and workflow
- Choose Kit as the first free-plan candidate if your main constraint is audience capacity, you want forms and landing pages included, and broadcasts are sufficient for the campaign. Its stated allowance is up to 10,000 subscribers, but that does not mean its automated sequence features are free.
- Consider Mailchimp Free if your list will stay within 250 contacts and your total sending fits 500 emails per month and 250 per day. Those caps can become restrictive quickly when invitations, reminders and follow-ups go to every registrant.
- Compare paid automation plans if reminders must go out at scheduled intervals or registrants need different follow-up based on actions. Confirm the exact automation builder and sequence access available on your intended plan, including any account or legacy restrictions.
- Evaluate the landing-page presentation if URL branding or platform branding matters. Mailchimp’s free-page identifier is randomly generated, and its free embedded form carries a Referral badge.
- Check integrations directly if registrations must connect to your website, booking system or course platform. The available evidence does not establish coach-specific integration compatibility for either service.
Plan the campaign before choosing
- Estimate registrations and audience size. Compare the expected contact count with Mailchimp’s 250-contact Free cap and Kit’s stated Free allowance of up to 10,000 subscribers.
- Count total sends, not just registrants. Add the invitation, each reminder and any replay or follow-up email for each recipient. Then compare that total and daily peak against Mailchimp’s 500 monthly and 250 daily Free limits; Kit lists unlimited broadcasts on Free.
- Map the desired email timing. Write down each message and trigger—for example, registration confirmation, a pre-session reminder and a post-session replay. Verify whether your chosen plan can automate those steps rather than relying on manual broadcasts.
- Decide what registration means for your operation. If you need attendance tracking, event access, calendar handling or check-in, identify a separate tool or process; email marketing signup features do not establish those capabilities.
- Test the actual page and list flow. Check the URL, branding, form fields, tags, confirmation experience and integration with your existing tools before sending a campaign-wide invitation.
What the plan limits mean in practice
Mailchimp says that when an account exceeds its Free contact limit, live and test email sending is put on hold until the account is upgraded or the contact count is reduced. Its send limit is independent of the contact cap: an audience under 250 contacts can still run into the monthly or daily email allowance if messages are sent repeatedly.

Kit’s higher stated free subscriber allowance makes it more accommodating for a larger list, but capacity alone does not settle the choice. A coach who needs scheduled sequences may still need a paid plan, while a smaller campaign that only needs forms and individual broadcasts may not require automation at all.

For a small, straightforward registration campaign where free capacity matters most, Kit has the stronger documented Free allowance. Mailchimp can collect registrations too, but its Free plan’s 250-contact cap and 500 monthly/250 daily send limits require closer volume planning. For automated reminders and replay delivery, compare the precise paid-plan features in both accounts; neither platform’s signup tools should be mistaken for full event or attendance management.
