Those details vary. The Nokia 2780 Flip is one example: it uses a nano-SIM in a holder beneath the back cover, but its instructions do not apply to every flip phone.
Before you insert the SIM
- Check the phone model. Find its model name and consult the manufacturer’s manual for the SIM size, slot location, and installation method. A flip phone may have a slot under a removable cover or a tray elsewhere on the body.
- Power it off. If your manual says to disconnect accessories or remove the battery, do that before opening the phone.
- Check the card and slot markings. Use the orientation shown by the manual or slot. Do not force a SIM that does not sit flat or whose holder will not close.
SIM size and compatibility are model-specific. For example, HMD says the Nokia 2780 Flip takes a nano-SIM and warns that an incompatible SIM may damage the card or device. Its guide states: “This device is designed to be used with a nano-SIM card only. Use of incompatible SIM cards may damage the card or the device, and may corrupt data stored on the card.” Read HMD Global’s Nokia 2780 Flip user guide.

Example: insert a SIM in the Nokia 2780 Flip
Use these steps only for the Nokia 2780 Flip. HMD’s guide specifies a nano-SIM and a holder beneath the back cover.

- Switch off the phone and disconnect the charger and any other connected device.
- Open the back cover using the small slot at the bottom of the phone.
- If the battery is installed, remove it.
- Slide the SIM holder to the left, then open it.
- Place the nano-SIM in the holder with its face down.
- Close the holder and slide it to the right until it locks.
- Reinstall the battery and back cover, then switch on the phone.

If your flip phone looks different
Do not assume it takes a nano-SIM, has a removable back or battery, or uses a face-down holder. Follow the instructions for your exact model instead. For instance, TCL’s FAQ for the device it covers says to power off before inserting or removing a SIM or microSD card and to place the card chip-side down in the indicated slot; it also says nano-SIM is not supported for that device. That guidance is specific to the device covered by TCL and does not establish the right SIM size or steps for other flip phones. See TCL’s SIM and microSD guidance.

What to do if the SIM will not fit
- Stop if the card will not sit in the slot or the holder will not close as shown. Do not push or cut the card to make it fit.
- Recheck the model-specific manual for the supported SIM size and the correct orientation.
- Check whether the card belongs in a different slot or tray on your phone; slot placement varies by model.
- If you cannot confirm compatibility from the manual or slot markings, contact the phone maker or your carrier before trying again.
