Ghost’s publishing software can be self-hosted without a Ghost software subscription, but running it is not free: you pay for a server and take responsibility for setup, updates, security, backups, and any extra services you use. For a managed option, Ghost(Pro)’s annual-billing prices listed on October 7, 2026, were $18 per month for Starter, $29 for Publisher, and $199 for Business; Custom is quoted on request. Choose based on the features and operational work you need, not just the headline hosting price.
What Ghost costs in 2026
There are two ways to run Ghost: host the open-source software yourself, or pay for Ghost(Pro), Ghost’s managed hosting service. Self-hosting avoids a Ghost(Pro) plan fee, but still involves infrastructure and labor. Ghost(Pro) bundles hosting with operational services.

Is self-hosted Ghost free?
The Ghost software is open source, so you can run it without paying Ghost for a hosting plan. But a public site needs a server, and a production installation needs someone to configure and maintain it. You may also choose to pay separately for services such as email delivery, analytics, backups, a CDN or web application firewall, and image editing.
Ghost’s hosting guide gives an illustrative comparison—not a guaranteed quote—of Ghost(Pro) base hosting from $15 per month and self-hosted base hosting from $10 per month. It separately lists self-hosting service estimates of $20 per month for CDN/WAF, $15 for email delivery, $10 for analytics, $5 for full backups, and $12 for image editing. These are guide figures, not current offers from named providers, and the listed services are not necessarily required for every installation. Check the prices and requirements of the services you actually choose.
Rank #2
A lightweight site may cost less to self-host in cash than to run on Ghost(Pro). For a busier publication, the extra services and maintenance effort can change the calculation. Ghost’s guide says self-hosting generally works out more expensive for heavy users, while it can be cheaper for lightweight blogs. That is Ghost’s guidance, not a universal cost guarantee.
What Ghost(Pro) includes—and what self-hosting asks you to do
With Ghost(Pro), Ghost handles managed setup, weekly updates, SSL, backups, CDN/WAF, and newsletter email delivery. Ghost also provides product support. Self-hosting gives you more direct control, including SSH and database access and the ability to modify Ghost core, but you operate the installation and source any separate services you need. Ghost’s comparison distinguishes managed convenience from self-hosting control; it is not an independent performance test.
Self-hosting has ongoing technical requirements
Ghost’s production guide recommends Ubuntu 24, Node.js 22 LTS, MySQL 8.0, NGINX, and Systemd, on a server with at least 1 GB of memory. Ghost CLI commands should be run as a non-root user. Other operating systems, databases, and web servers may work, but Ghost says they are not officially supported or widely adopted.
Expect to handle installation and configuration, weekly updates, server maintenance, and SSL. Ghost’s guidance also recommends security measures such as HTTPS, secure MySQL configuration, firewall rules, and disabling SSH root and password login. The time and skill needed for this work belong in any honest cost comparison.

Which Ghost(Pro) plan should you choose?
Starter: a solo site and newsletter
Starter is the entry point for a solo publication that can stay within one staff account and 1,000 members. It suits a site and newsletter that do not need the paid-subscription or custom-theme features listed for higher tiers.
Publisher: paid subscriptions, custom themes, or more staff
Publisher is the first listed plan with paid subscriptions and custom themes. Its three-staff limit may also fit a small publication that has outgrown Starter’s single staff account. Its listed member limit remains 1,000, the same as Starter.
Best Value
Business: higher member and team limits
Business raises the listed limits to 10,000 members and 15 staff, and highlights higher usage limits and priority support. It is the relevant tier when those capacity or support needs justify the substantial step up from Publisher.

Custom lists unlimited members and staff, but has no displayed fixed price. Contact Ghost for a quote if your publication needs a custom configuration or service arrangement.
How to decide between Ghost(Pro) and self-hosting
Compare the full operating picture rather than treating the software’s open-source status as a zero-cost hosting option.
- Recurring cash: Add server hosting and any email, CDN/WAF, analytics, backup, or image services you choose for self-hosting. Compare that total with the Ghost(Pro) tier that meets your needs.
- Time and technical capacity: Account for installation, updates, backups, security, and troubleshooting. If you would rather focus on publishing, managed hosting avoids much of that operational work.
- Control: Self-hosting suits teams that need direct server and database access or want the option to modify core software. Ghost(Pro) trades some of that control for a managed service.
- Plan fit: Check member and staff limits and whether you need paid subscriptions, custom themes, higher usage limits, or priority support.
- Support responsibility: Ghost(Pro) includes product support; with self-hosting, you are responsible for your server and separately sourced services.
Ghost itself advises that Ghost(Pro) is probably the better choice if you are unsure, while a technical team seeking maximum control and flexibility may get more from self-hosting. Treat that as the vendor’s recommendation, not an independent comparison.
Trial and billing
Ghost’s pricing page advertises a 14-day trial. Its billing help, checked October 7, 2026, says new accounts start with a 14-day free trial, are not billed when it expires, and must select a plan to continue. Confirm the terms shown during signup at Ghost’s subscription help page.
