Terraria’s dedicated-server software is free. Re-Logic describes a Terraria server as “a platform for players to connect over the internet or other network for multiplayer gaming.” The software itself is not the expensive part. Someone still has to supply a computer or hosted virtual machine, a network connection, electricity, storage and time for administration.
In practice, free Terraria multiplayer falls into three models:

- Host & Play: the quickest option for a session with friends. The host’s game session is the server.
- Self-hosted dedicated server: free server software runs on a computer you control. The machine must stay online whenever players need access.
- Third-party free or credit-based hosting: a provider runs the server and may give you a dashboard at no charge, subject to its resource and continuity rules.
These models can all cost zero at checkout, but they do not provide the same availability, control or reliability.
Host & Play: free and simple, but session-bound
Host & Play is the official guide’s simplest multiplayer method. It works well for in-home LAN games and short online co-op because the host can create or select a world and invite others without operating a separate server process.

- Fast setup for a small group.
- No separate server computer to configure.
- No router port-forwarding project for the normal in-game flow.
- The same world can be used for a cooperative play session.
What you do not get
Host & Play is not a persistent community server. Availability is tied to the host’s play session. When the host exits, disconnects or loses the machine, the world is no longer reachable through that session. Friends cannot normally enter at arbitrary times while the owner is away.
Choose this model when everyone can play at the same time and convenience matters more than 24/7 access. If players need to build while the owner is offline, use a dedicated server instead.

Self-hosting a dedicated Terraria server
A dedicated server separates the server process from a normal player session. You can run it on a spare desktop, another computer on your network or a rented machine. The Terraria server program is free; the ongoing cost is the hardware, connectivity and attention needed to keep it available.
Hardware and capacity basics
The Official Terraria Wiki documents about 500 MB of free RAM for a small world. Actual memory requirements rise with world size and the number of simultaneous players, so that figure is a starting point rather than a universal server specification. The default maximum is 16 players, with a configurable range up to 255. A higher player setting does not guarantee that the computer, internet connection or game configuration can handle the load.

CPU contention from other applications, slow disks and an unstable connection can cause lag even when RAM appears sufficient.
Network requirements
The dedicated server listens on TCP port 7777 by default. For players outside your home network to connect, the router generally needs a port-forwarding rule that sends TCP 7777 to the computer running the server. The operating system’s firewall must also allow the server process or that port.

If you cannot forward a port, an overlay VPN can provide an alternative path: every player joins the same virtual network and connects using the server computer’s VPN address. That approach adds another application and account layer, so it is less convenient for a broad public community.
Practical setup sequence
- Prepare the host computer. Use a machine with enough free RAM for your world and expected player count. Disable sleep or hibernation while the server is intended to be reachable, and keep the operating system and Terraria server files on storage with regular backups.
- Install the official dedicated-server software. Keep the server version aligned with the Terraria version used by players. A version mismatch can prevent connections or create compatibility problems.
- Create or select a world. Decide where world files are stored and make a backup copy before major updates, configuration changes or mod experiments.
- Configure the server. Set the world, player limit and other available options in the server configuration or startup process. Keep administrative credentials private.
- Allow local traffic. Add a firewall rule for the server application or TCP port 7777. Test a connection from another device on the same network first.
- Configure internet access. On the router, forward TCP 7777 to the host computer’s local address. Reserve that local address if possible so the forwarding rule does not break after a DHCP change.
- Share the correct address. Local players use the host’s local address; internet players use the public address or a stable name that points to it. Do not publish administrative passwords.
- Test and monitor. Join with a second account or ask a friend to test from outside the home network. Watch the console and logs for crashes, failed saves and connection errors.
The exact names of configuration fields vary with the server package and version. The essential path remains the same: run the dedicated process, select a world, expose TCP 7777 safely and keep the host online.
What “free” self-hosting costs in practice
Self-hosting is cash-free only when you already own the computer and treat its internet service, electricity and your administration time as sunk costs. The machine must remain powered and connected for the world to be reachable. A laptop that sleeps when its lid closes is not an always-on server.
You also become responsible for:
- Installing Terraria and server updates.
- Maintaining firewall and router rules.
- Backing up world files and checking that backups can be restored.
- Protecting the server from unwanted access and keeping administrator credentials private.
- Recovering after crashes, power cuts, corrupted saves or a failed update.
- Managing player permissions, bans and configuration changes.
These tasks are the trade-off for having direct access to the world, configuration and console without a provider’s policy or resource ceiling.

Third-party free and credit-based hosting
Some hosting companies offer a no-cost Terraria instance, a time-limited allowance or a server that runs only while you have provider credits. The provider supplies the compute and network connection, so your home computer does not need to stay on. In exchange, the free tier may be constrained by idle shutdowns, reclaimed storage, queueing, limited CPU or RAM, a player cap, or rules that can change.
Dashboard features you may receive
One advertised no-card Terraria service, AxentHost, lists dashboard controls for starting and stopping the server, viewing a console, managing files and worlds, editing configuration and accessing mod folders. Those are provider claims about available controls; they do not establish guaranteed uptime, retention, player limits, geographic coverage, backups or compatibility with every mod pack.
A control panel can make routine work easier, but it does not automatically make a free server persistent. Before moving a valuable world, read the provider’s current terms for suspension, deletion, inactivity reclamation, storage quotas, backup policy and export options.
Questions to answer before uploading a world
- Does the server stop after inactivity, and how is it restarted?
- Can the provider delete or reclaim a free instance or its files?
- How much RAM, storage and CPU time are included?
- Is the player limit documented, and is it shared across customers?
- Are automated backups included, or must you download world files yourself?
- Which Terraria, tModLoader and mod versions are supported?
- Where are the servers located, and what latency should your players expect?
- Can you export the world and configuration if the free offer ends?
If a term is not stated, treat it as a risk rather than assuming the paid-tier behavior applies to the free tier.
Availability: is a free Terraria server online 24/7?
There is no single answer because the model determines availability.

A self-hosted machine can be available day and night, but that is an operational choice, not a feature granted by the free software. A provider may keep a server running continuously, yet you should not promise 24/7 uptime unless its current terms explicitly guarantee it.

Mods: free hosting does not guarantee compatibility
Vanilla Terraria and modded Terraria are different server stacks. A modded server commonly requires tModLoader or another compatible server setup, and every player must use matching game, loader and mod versions. A mod folder in a dashboard only proves that files can be uploaded; it does not prove that a particular mod pack will start or remain stable.
Check these items before installing a mod pack
- Server and client Terraria versions.
- Loader version, such as the tModLoader release required by the pack.
- Exact mod versions and dependencies.
- Whether the provider permits custom server binaries or startup arguments.
- Available RAM and storage for the loader, mods, logs and world.
- Backup and rollback options before changing the pack.
Test a copy of the world first. Keep the previous world and configuration files so you can roll back if the server crashes or a mod changes world data.
Continuity, backups and recovery
A persistent world is valuable data. Host & Play and self-hosting leave responsibility with the host; a free provider may add another failure mode if an account is suspended or an instance is reclaimed.
Minimum backup routine
- Stop the server cleanly before copying the active world file when possible.
- Keep multiple dated copies rather than overwriting one backup.
- Store at least one copy away from the server computer or provider account.
- Download worlds and important configuration before changing versions or mods.
- Periodically test restoring a copy on a separate server process.
After a crash, preserve the logs and the last known-good world before repeatedly restarting. Remove the most recent configuration or mod change, restore the backup and test with one player before reopening the server.
Which free option fits your group?
Choose Host & Play when
- You play together at scheduled times.
- The host can remain in the session.
- You want the least setup and no network administration.
Choose self-hosting when
- You need direct access to world files, console and configuration.
- You can leave a computer and connection online.
- You are comfortable with TCP 7777 forwarding, firewall rules, updates and backups.
- You want to decide how vanilla or modded software is installed.
Choose a third-party free or credit-based plan when
- You do not want a home computer running continuously.
- A dashboard is more important than complete infrastructure control.
- You can accept provider-specific limits and maintain independent backups.
For a short co-op night, Host & Play is usually enough. For a persistent private world, self-hosting offers the clearest control if you already have suitable hardware. A free provider can be convenient, but verify its continuity, capacity and mod terms before treating it as a long-term home for your world.
