Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallThere is no Cfx.re-published minimum RAM or CPU specification for an FXServer. The right server depends on concurrent players, OneSync slot settings, framework and resource load, database activity, and how well those resources are optimized. FiveM’s published RAM figures describe the player client running with GTA V, not the server.
For a small test server, an existing Windows or Linux machine may be enough. A public roleplay server needs measured headroom, reliable networking, fast storage, and a plan for backups and administration. This guide separates confirmed platform rules from hardware estimates and shows how to choose between self-hosting, txAdmin, and managed hosting.

FiveM client requirements are not FXServer requirements
The official FiveM system-requirements page covers the software installed by each player. Its figures are:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →| Client edition | Minimum RAM | Recommended RAM | What the figures apply to |
|---|---|---|---|
| FiveM Legacy | 4 GB | 8 GB | The player’s computer running FiveM and GTA V |
| FiveM for GTAV Enhanced | 8 GB | 16 GB | The player’s computer running the Enhanced client and GTA V |
Those numbers cannot be converted into “server RAM per player.” An FXServer does not render the game for players; it runs networking, game-state logic, scripts, assets, database connections, voice or chat integrations, and administrative services. A lightly configured development server and a heavily scripted roleplay server can have very different CPU and memory behavior at the same player count.

Cfx.re’s official setup material does not publish a fixed minimum RAM, CPU model, or per-player formula for FXServer. Treat any exact hardware recipe as a scenario-specific estimate unless Cfx.re identifies it as a requirement.
How much RAM does a FiveM server need?
RAM is a capacity and headroom question, not a slot-count conversion. The server must hold the FXServer process, framework, resources, caches, database or database client, operating system, monitoring tools, and temporary workload spikes in memory. Leave room for the operating system and maintenance tasks rather than allocating every gigabyte to the game process.
What increases memory use
- More simultaneous players and entities being tracked.
- Large roleplay frameworks, inventories, housing systems, jobs, dispatch, voice integrations, and custom UI resources.
- Scripts that retain player, vehicle, or world state instead of releasing it.
- Embedded or local database services and other applications on the same machine.
- Large custom assets and caches, especially during restarts or resource reloads.
Watch actual memory use during the busiest period of the day. If usage remains close to the machine’s physical limit, the operating system may page to disk, producing stalls that look like script or network problems. More RAM cannot repair a runaway resource, but it can prevent otherwise healthy workloads from competing for memory.
A community example, not a minimum
In a 2023 Cfx.re forum discussion about a planned 200-player roleplay server, one respondent suggested 16 GB of RAM, a 3.4–4.4 GHz CPU, NVMe storage, and 1 Gbps bandwidth. That was advice for one proposed scenario, not a benchmark, certification, or guarantee. The same discussion emphasized that optimization and resource quality affect lag and stability. Use it as a starting point for investigation, never as a promise that 16 GB supports 200 players.
What CPU do you need for a FiveM server?
FXServer performance is often limited by the speed and consistency of the CPU executing the server’s busiest work. Core count still matters when your operating system, database, monitoring, and other services run alongside the server, but a plan advertised only by total cores can be misleading. Compare sustained per-core performance, CPU generation, contention from other tenants, and whether the provider gives dedicated or shared time.

Workloads that expose CPU limits
- Many active scripts processing events on every player or entity.
- High-frequency loops, pathfinding, physics-related logic, and vehicle or AI systems.
- Database queries triggered by player actions, especially when poorly indexed.
- Large numbers of synchronized entities under OneSync.
- Resource restarts or initialization of a large resource set.
When the main server thread cannot keep up, players may see delayed interactions, entity updates, or increasing server time even though RAM appears available. Profile and disable inefficient resources before buying substantially more hardware. Cfx.re notes in its server-issues documentation that “adding resources to your server increases the startup time”; startup delay is also a useful warning that a configuration is becoming more complex.
Storage, network, and operating-system considerations
Storage
Use reliable SSD storage for the operating system, artifact, resources, database files, and backups. NVMe can reduce file and database latency, but it does not compensate for a CPU-bound script. Keep free space for artifacts, logs, crash dumps, resource updates, and rotating backups. A separate backup destination protects you from a full disk or a damaged server volume.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Network
Bandwidth is only one part of connectivity. Stable routing, low packet loss, sufficient upstream capacity, a reachable public port, and a location close to your player base affect the experience. A 1 Gbps figure in the 2023 forum example was a recommendation for that specific 200-player scenario, not an official FiveM requirement. Residential connections may use carrier-grade NAT, impose upload limits, or change public IP addresses, all of which complicate public hosting.
Operating system
Cfx.re provides vanilla setup guidance for Windows and Linux. Its Linux guide calls Linux a courtesy port and notes compatibility and diagnostics limitations; that is a support caveat, not a statement that Linux cannot run FiveM servers. Choose the system you can patch, secure, monitor, and recover confidently.
Player slots, sv_maxClients, and OneSync
Hardware does not determine the legal or configured slot cap by itself. Cfx.re documents sv_maxClients as an integer from 1 through 2048. The OneSync mode and Cfx Portal subscription rules apply at higher caps.

OneSync is documented as free up to 48 slots |
| 65–2048 | OneSync must be on |
More than 48 slots requires Element Club Argentum or a higher Cfx Portal tier, according to the current OneSync guidance |
The OneSync documentation states that free access extends up to 48 slots and that a higher Cfx Portal tier is needed beyond that. Cfx.re’s support guidance, updated April 29, 2026, also warns that changing a Portal subscription does not automatically change sv_maxClients. You must update the server configuration yourself and restart or otherwise apply the change as instructed.
The vanilla configuration example uses OneSync and a 48-client limit. It is a setup example, not a claim that 48 players require a particular CPU or amount of RAM. Slot limits and subscription conditions can change, so check the live Cfx.re documentation and Portal before purchasing equipment or advertising capacity.
Choosing a hosting route
Self-hosting on Windows
Windows is a practical choice if you already administer Windows, need familiar tools, or are testing locally. You remain responsible for firewall rules, port forwarding, updates, backups, account security, and keeping the machine online. A home PC can work for development or a small private community, but power-saving settings, reboots, Wi-Fi, and household bandwidth are common causes of outages.
Self-hosting on Linux
Linux can offer efficient, scriptable administration and is widely used for servers. Follow Cfx.re’s current vanilla Linux instructions, use a supported current server artifact, and account for the compatibility and diagnostics limitations Cfx.re documents for its courtesy Linux port. You will need to manage service supervision, updates, permissions, firewalling, logs, and backups yourself.
txAdmin
txAdmin is an officially supported, guided setup path. It can simplify artifact installation, configuration, server starting and stopping, permissions, and routine administration compared with assembling every step manually. It does not remove the need to choose adequate hardware, secure the host, or monitor resource behavior.

Managed game-server hosting
Cfx.re says users can rent a server through authorized hosting partners. A managed host may provide a control panel, automated restarts, network protection, support, and easier upgrades. Compare the actual allocation rather than the advertised slot number:
For a managed FiveM route, Godlike.Host provides FiveM game-server hosting with a Pterodactyl-based game panel, SFTP/FTP access, free DDoS protection, and up to three free backups a day with restore. It is not on Cfx.re’s list of authorized FiveM hosts (fivem.net, 10 Oct 2026).
- Dedicated or shared CPU time, CPU generation, and sustained per-core performance.
- Guaranteed RAM and whether the limit includes the operating system or database.
- SSD or NVMe storage capacity, backup policy, and restore process.
- Network location, transfer limits, DDoS protection, and port availability.
- Artifact and operating-system update responsibility.
- Ability to change plans without migrating the entire server.
- Access to logs, profiler data, file management, and database tools.
- Support response times and what “managed” actually covers.
A low-cost plan with many nominal slots may perform worse than a smaller plan with a faster, less-contended CPU. Ask the provider how CPU limits are enforced and whether you can observe memory, CPU, and network usage under load.
Setup checklist for a public FXServer
- Choose the route. Decide between a machine you administer and an authorized hosting provider. For self-hosting, select Windows or Linux based on your operational skills and network conditions.
- Install a current server artifact. Cfx.re’s setup pages provide the artifact and installation path for txAdmin and vanilla Windows or Linux deployments. Avoid building a public service on an obsolete artifact.
- Create a Cfx license key. A public server requires a free Cfx license key. Keep the key private and place it only in the server configuration or management interface intended for it.
- Configure networking. Use the documented server port (the vanilla example uses 30120), allow it through the host firewall, and forward it on your router if the server is behind NAT. Confirm that your provider or ISP permits inbound traffic.
- Set OneSync and the slot cap. Configure
onesyncandsv_maxClientsconsistently with the documented thresholds and your Portal entitlement. A subscription change alone does not edit the configuration. - Add resources gradually. Start with the framework and essential resources, then add scripts one group at a time. Record startup time, server time, memory use, and errors after each change.
- Secure and back up the service. Use unique administrator credentials, least-privilege access, firewall rules, automatic updates where appropriate, and backups stored away from the live server. Test restoring a backup before you need it.
- Load-test with your real stack. Invite representative testers and exercise the busiest jobs, interiors, vehicles, database actions, and UI flows. A synthetic slot number is not a substitute for observing your own resources.
How to size a server without a false formula
Begin with a target peak, not an advertised maximum. Write down expected concurrent players, framework, resource list, database arrangement, custom assets, voice integrations, restart schedule, and geographic location. Then choose a plan with enough CPU and memory headroom for the operating system and bursts.
| Situation | Practical starting approach | What to validate |
|---|---|---|
| Local development or private testing | Existing Windows or Linux hardware with txAdmin or vanilla setup | Resource errors, startup time, port reachability, and memory growth |
| Small public community | Managed or self-hosted machine sized for the actual peak, with backups | CPU time during busy scripts, network stability, database latency, and restart recovery |
| Large roleplay project | Fast, low-contention CPU, substantial RAM headroom, fast storage, and an operational backup plan | Long-duration load, synchronized entities, database contention, resource leaks, and scaling options |
Increase capacity only after measurements show which resource is constrained. If CPU is saturated while RAM is comfortable, a faster CPU or better host allocation is the relevant upgrade. If memory is exhausted, remove leaks or add RAM. If players report disconnections while CPU and RAM look normal, investigate routing, packet loss, firewalling, and provider limits.

Common mistakes and fixes
Using client specifications as server specifications
Symptom: You buy or rent a machine because it matches the FiveM client’s 4 GB or 8 GB figure. Fix: Treat those numbers as player-PC requirements and size the server from its workload and measurements.
Assuming RAM determines slots
Symptom: A server has free memory but still suffers delayed events or high server time. Fix: Profile CPU-bound resources, database queries, and synchronization behavior; slot capacity is not a RAM-only property.
Changing a Portal plan but not the configuration
Symptom: Billing shows a higher entitlement, but the server still advertises the old cap. Fix: Edit sv_maxClients, verify the correct OneSync mode, and restart or reload according to the current documentation.
Adding every resource at once
Symptom: Startup becomes slow and it is impossible to identify the source of errors. Fix: Add resources in small groups, measure after each change, and remove scripts that produce persistent warnings or excessive server time.
Ignoring the home network
Symptom: A powerful home machine is unreachable from outside or disconnects during normal household use. Fix: Check public addressing, carrier-grade NAT, router forwarding, upload capacity, wired connectivity, and a stable always-on power and network arrangement.
Can you host a FiveM server at home?
Yes, provided your connection accepts inbound traffic and your hardware can remain online. Home hosting is most suitable for development, testing, or a small community whose players are near your location. It gives you control and avoids a monthly host bill, but you also carry responsibility for security, patching, backups, power failures, changing IP addresses, and support.
For a public service where uptime and predictable latency matter, a managed host is often operationally simpler. The decision is not “home versus hosting” based on a universal performance threshold; it is a trade-off between control, administration, network reliability, support, and the workload you have measured.

What to verify before publishing a player count
- The configured
sv_maxClientsvalue is within the documented 1–2048 range. - OneSync mode matches the slot threshold.
- Your Cfx Portal tier covers more than 48 slots when applicable.
- The advertised number reflects a tested peak, not just available RAM.
- CPU, memory, storage, database, and network usage remain healthy during the busiest scenario.
- Backups restore successfully and an administrator can recover the service after a crash.
- Players in the intended region can connect reliably through the chosen host or home ISP.
