For a new Minecraft server, choose Forge if you need mods, not Cauldron. Cauldron is effectively retired, limited to Minecraft 1.6.4 and 1.7.10, and has not been actively developed since the 1.7.10 era. Forge remains maintained and is the mainstream modding platform, but Forge by itself does not load Bukkit or Spigot plugins. If your server genuinely needs Forge mods and Bukkit/Spigot plugins together, use a maintained Forge hybrid such as Mohist—after checking the exact fork and Minecraft version you intend to run.

The choice is therefore less a contest between two equally current products and more a selection among three architectures: Forge for mods, a conventional plugin server for plugins alone, or a Forge hybrid when both ecosystems are unavoidable. Cauldron belongs primarily in the legacy category.

What Forge is—and what it is not
Forge is the mod loader and server platform
Forge is the most widely used Minecraft modding platform identified in the available material. A Forge server loads mods built for the same Minecraft and Forge version combination. That makes it the natural base for a modpack that adds blocks, items, dimensions, machines, world generation, entities, or other mod-defined content.
“Supported by Forge” does not mean that every mod works with every Forge release. Your server, client, Forge build, and each mod must target compatible versions. Treat the modpack’s declared Minecraft version as the starting point, then select the Forge build and server package that the pack expects. If a modpack publisher supplies a server bundle, use that bundle rather than assembling files from unrelated versions.
Forge does not provide Bukkit or Spigot plugin support
Installing Forge does not create a Bukkit or Spigot plugin environment. A plugin written for those APIs expects the event model, commands, permissions, and lifecycle exposed by a Bukkit-family server. Forge exposes a different modding API. Dropping a plugin JAR into a Forge server’s directory will not turn it into a plugin server, and it can produce errors or simply be ignored.
This distinction answers the common question “Can Forge run plugins?”: Forge alone cannot run Bukkit/Spigot plugins. If a feature is available both as a Forge mod and as a plugin, use the implementation intended for your server type. If the only available implementation is a Bukkit/Spigot plugin, plain Forge is the wrong platform for that feature.
When Forge is the straightforward choice
- Your pack is built entirely from Forge mods.
- You need the same modded content on the server and on players’ clients.
- You want a current Minecraft version rather than a 1.6.4 or 1.7.10 legacy environment.
- You can replace plugin-only features with Forge-compatible mods or do without them.
For this use case, adding a hybrid layer increases complexity without solving a real problem. Start with the official Forge server package required by the modpack and keep the installation as close to the pack’s documented layout as possible.

Why Cauldron is not a current option
Its development line ended in the 1.7.10 era
Cauldron is described as no longer actively developed after Minecraft 1.7.10. Hosting guidance commonly lists it as limited to Minecraft 1.6.4 and 1.7.10. Those limits are not merely a missing download choice: they also constrain the mods, client versions, security fixes, performance work, and compatibility improvements available to the server.
An old server can continue to run because its files still exist, but “it starts” is not the same as “it is supported.” A public server built on retired software has no current maintenance path when a mod, operating-system update, Java change, or hosting environment exposes a new problem.
Where Cauldron can still make sense
There are narrow preservation cases. You may need to reopen a private 1.6.4 or 1.7.10 world exactly as it was, or reproduce a historic modpack whose dependencies were written for that period. In that situation, keep the server private or tightly controlled, preserve the original files, and work from a copy. Do not treat Cauldron as a sensible base for a new community, a new modpack, or a migration to a modern Minecraft release.
Why replacing Cauldron is difficult
Cauldron worlds can contain blocks, entities, tile data, and plugin-managed state that another server type does not understand. Moving the files may leave missing blocks, broken entities, or a corrupted world. Even when the world opens, behavior can change because a different server implements events and chunk processing differently.
Keep the original Cauldron installation untouched. The safe approach is to duplicate the world and configuration, test the target server on the duplicate, inspect several important areas, and retain a rollback copy until players have used the migrated world successfully.

When a Forge hybrid is the right answer
Use a hybrid only for a real two-ecosystem requirement
If your design requires Forge mods and Bukkit/Spigot plugins, the sources most often identify Mohist as the relevant hybrid. Mohist describes itself as a Minecraft Forge hybrid server that implements the Spigot/Bukkit API. Its project history identifies it as a successor or continuation associated with Thermos, Cauldron, and MCPC+.
A hybrid is a compromise, not “Forge with plugins switched on.” It has to translate between two server models. That can introduce compatibility differences, timing issues, duplicate event handling, or conflicts between a mod and a plugin that both alter the same game system. Test every critical mechanic—permissions, economy, protection, teleportation, custom mobs, world generation, and scheduled tasks—on a staging copy before opening the server to players.
Check the exact Mohist fork and Minecraft version
Mohist version information differs between forks, and the available pages do not establish a single current official release list. Examples shown on fork pages include:

Before downloading anything, verify the project’s own release list, documentation, and issue activity for the precise Minecraft version your mods and plugins require. Do not select a version merely because a search result mentions it. A label such as “Active,” “WIP,” or “End Of Life” belongs to that fork and release line.
Understand the hybrid trade-off
- Benefit: one server can expose Forge mod content while accepting plugins written for the Bukkit/Spigot API.
- Cost: more moving parts, narrower version choices, and a larger compatibility-testing burden than plain Forge.
- Risk: a plugin may appear to load but fail under a modded event sequence, or a mod may assume behavior that a Bukkit-compatible layer changes.
- Operational rule: freeze the tested Minecraft, hybrid, mod, and plugin versions together; update one component at a time.
A practical decision process
Step 1: Inventory what the server must load
- Write down every required mod and the Minecraft version each one targets.
- List every required plugin and identify whether it requires the Bukkit or Spigot API.
- Separate “must have” features from conveniences that could be replaced by a mod, removed, or postponed.
- Record whether the existing world contains modded blocks, entities, dimensions, or plugin-created data.
This inventory prevents a common mistake: choosing a server type based on one desired feature while overlooking a dependency that dictates the entire version.

Step 2: Choose the smallest platform that satisfies the list
- Choose Forge when all required functionality is provided by Forge mods.
- Choose a Forge hybrid such as Mohist only when at least one required feature is a Bukkit/Spigot plugin and cannot reasonably be replaced.
- Choose Cauldron only for controlled legacy preservation of an existing 1.6.4 or 1.7.10 environment.
The smallest platform is usually easier to update, diagnose, and restore. Do not add hybrid compatibility “just in case.”
Step 3: Pin the version matrix
Create one written matrix containing Minecraft version, Forge or hybrid build, mod versions, plugin versions, Java requirement, and the world’s current software. A blank or contradictory entry is a stop sign. Resolve it before migration rather than discovering the mismatch after the server has saved new chunks.
For Mohist, check the selected fork’s release page immediately before installation. Fork-level labels differ, and none of the example pages establishes a definitive official list for every Minecraft release.
Step 4: Build a disposable test server
- Install the target software in a new directory, separate from the live server.
- Install only the pinned mods and plugins first.
- Start with a fresh test world to confirm that the server itself launches and that clients can connect.
- Copy a backup of the real world into the test environment only after the clean start succeeds.
- Exercise critical areas: spawn, homes and teleports, protected builds, inventories, redstone or machines, custom entities, dimensions, and scheduled plugin tasks.
- Read the complete startup log and test with more than one player account if permissions or economy are involved.
A clean-world test separates platform problems from corrupted-world problems. If the clean world fails, changing the save will not fix the underlying incompatibility.

Announce a maintenance window, stop the live server cleanly, and preserve the original installation. Copy the tested world and configuration into the target installation, start it with player access disabled, and verify the checks from the staging test. Keep the old server and its untouched backup until the new server has passed a normal play session.

Backups are mandatory before switching from Cauldron to Forge, from Forge to a hybrid, or between different Minecraft versions. A useful backup set contains:
- The complete world directory, including every dimension and region file.
- Server configuration files and permission or economy data.
- The exact mod and plugin files used by the old server.
- Startup scripts, launch arguments, and the recorded software versions.
- A copy stored outside the live server directory so an upgrade cannot overwrite it.
Stop the server before copying files. A running server may still be writing chunks, player data, or region metadata; copying during those writes can produce an incomplete restore point. Label the backup with the Minecraft version and server software, then test that it can be opened in an isolated directory.
After migration, inspect more than the spawn area. Fly or walk through frequently used bases, visit each custom dimension, open containers, check machines and entities, and confirm that plugin-managed claims or inventories remain intact. Missing blocks or invisible entities are evidence to stop and restore the backup, not reasons to keep saving the damaged world.

“The plugin is in the folder, but nothing happens”
On plain Forge, this is expected: Forge does not implement the Bukkit/Spigot plugin API. Remove the unsupported plugin, find a Forge mod that provides the same feature, or move to a tested hybrid if the plugin is essential.
“The hybrid starts, but a plugin or mod behaves strangely”
Confirm that the plugin, mod, Minecraft version, and hybrid build are all in the tested matrix. Disable optional components one at a time and reproduce the problem on the staging copy. If the conflict involves a core mechanic, prefer a single-ecosystem replacement instead of layering more compatibility software.
“The world opens with missing blocks or broken entities”
Stop the target server and restore the pre-migration backup. The symptoms indicate that the destination does not understand some saved data or that the conversion changed behavior. Re-test with the original server, then investigate a version-compatible migration path before attempting another conversion.
“A download claims support for my version, but the project status is unclear”
Check the release page for the exact fork, not just a repository name or search snippet. Distinguish Active, WIP, archived, and End Of Life labels, and confirm that both your mods and plugins document compatibility with that build. If no trustworthy release information exists, do not make it the foundation of a public server.

Final verdict
For almost every new modded server, Forge is the defensible choice. It is maintained, reaches current Minecraft versions, and is designed for mods. Do not expect it to load Bukkit or Spigot plugins. If both ecosystems are non-negotiable, evaluate Mohist or another actively maintained hybrid for the exact version you need, and accept the additional testing and maintenance work. Cauldron should be retained only to preserve an old 1.6.4 or 1.7.10 installation—not selected as the foundation for a new server.
