Yes, you can host a Minecraft modpack for free, but only within a tight memory and performance budget. Aternos is the most practical free option for Forge, Fabric and selected CurseForge packs. It is suitable for small groups testing a lightweight pack; it is not a dependable way to run a large Better Minecraft or All The Mods instance. Free tiers are generally designed for small vanilla servers, while modpacks commonly need several times more RAM.
Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks, a built-in mod installer and up to three free backups a day.
This guide explains which free services support mods, what their published or reported limits mean, how to set up a pack, why servers crash, and when paying for hosting becomes the only realistic fix.

A modpack server runs the Minecraft server, the loader (usually Forge or Fabric), every required mod, world data, and player activity in the host’s memory allocation. Vanilla Minecraft has a comparatively small footprint. Large packs add hundreds of content, world-generation and automation mods, so startup memory and long-session memory use rise quickly.
One hosting review puts many free plans at roughly 1–2 GB of RAM, while describing 6–12 GB or more as a typical requirement for large modpacks. Those are review estimates rather than universal specifications, and a host can change its allocation without notice. Treat the gap as the important fact: a pack that starts on a free plan can still run out of memory as chunks, machines and entities accumulate.

| Workload | Practical expectation on a free plan | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Vanilla survival | Usually the safest use | Few background systems and lower memory growth |
| Small, curated Forge or Fabric pack | Possible for a few players if the host supports the loader | Less content and world generation to keep in memory |
| Large exploration, quest or automation pack | Often unreliable or unable to start | Higher startup requirement and continuing memory growth |
| All The Mods or a large Better Minecraft edition | Do not assume it will work for free | Staff reports on free services indicate that some packs need at least 4 GB, above many free allocations |
“Better Minecraft” is not one fixed workload: its Forge and Fabric editions, Minecraft versions and mod lists differ. Check the exact pack release and manifest rather than relying on the name alone.
Which free hosts support modpacks?
Limits below come from review reports, promotional claims or community replies, not a single current official specification page. Confirm the values in the host’s panel immediately before creating a world.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Service | Mod support | Free-tier information reported | Operational trade-offs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aternos | Java and Bedrock options; Forge, Fabric, Paper, Spigot and dozens of CurseForge packs are listed | A 2021 community recollection put allocations near 2,400 MB for Fabric and 2,500 MB for Forge; this is unofficial and version-dependent | Ad-supported panel, a start queue at busy times, and automatic stopping when nobody is online are commonly reported |
| Minehut | Plugins, not Forge or Fabric modpacks | Reviews report a 1 GB RAM limit and a 10-player cap | Useful for plugin servers, not a modpack solution |
| FreeGameHost | Advertises free Minecraft hosting | Promotional material claims 4 GB RAM, no queue and 24/7 uptime | Those are marketing claims; verify that the allocation and uptime rules apply to your region and software |
| OMGSERV | Free servers are reported as vanilla-only | No modpack allocation established | Not suitable when Forge or Fabric is a requirement |
| Oracle Cloud free tier | Self-managed virtual machine; no Minecraft-specific modpack support | No simple Minecraft plan or guaranteed game-server resources | Requires technical setup and a credit card; you install, secure and maintain everything yourself |
| ScalaCube | Its free-plan wording can be read as modpack support | A dependable free RAM or loader limit was not established | Do not infer Forge or Fabric compatibility from a general “modpack” label; confirm the exact software selector |
Aternos is the clearest starting point because its panel exposes supported server software and a catalogue of packs. Its free status does not mean unlimited resources: Aternos staff have said that a completely free service cannot simply provide more RAM, and that some heavy packs will fail to start or crash after running for a while.

Can I run All The Mods or Better Minecraft for free?
Only if the exact release fits the host’s tested memory envelope, and you should expect compromises. Aternos staff have described testing packs to confirm that they start and that basic play is possible, while warning that testing does not guarantee performance. In another support reply, staff said a pack requiring less than 4 GB could not be offered on the free service and was removed from the available list.
Use this decision check before inviting friends:
- Identify the Minecraft version and whether the pack is Forge or Fabric.
- Read the pack’s server instructions and stated minimum memory, if supplied.
- Count the number of mods and note whether the pack adds heavy world generation, dimensions, automation or large quest systems.
- Check the host’s current RAM display, not an old review or a forum recollection.
- Plan a test world first. A successful launch is not proof that a long-running shared world will remain stable.
If the host cannot provide the pack’s stated minimum memory, choose a smaller pack instead of repeatedly restarting the same server. Removing random mods can break dependencies and make the client and server disagree; use a lighter pack release or a deliberately curated list.
How to set up a free Forge or Fabric server on Aternos
Labels can change as the control panel is redesigned, but the workflow is consistent.

- CREATE YOUR WORLD — Build whatever you imagine in an infinite world that is unique in every playthrough.
- EXPLORE AND CRAFT — Discover biomes, resources, and mobs, then craft your way through a sandbox world full of surprises.
- SURVIVAL ADVENTURES — Face mysterious foes, travel across varied landscapes, and venture into perilous dimensions.
- PLAY TOGETHER — Play solo or join friends in local split-screen and cross-platform play across console, mobile, and PC. Online multiplayer supports up to 8 players.
- COMMUNITY PLAY — Connect with players on community servers, or subscribe to Realms Plus (sold separately) to play with up to 10 friends on a private server.
- Create and verify an account. Sign in to the Aternos panel and create a server. Keep the account credentials private; anyone with control-panel access can alter or delete the world.
- Select the edition and software. Choose Java Edition or Bedrock as appropriate, then open the software selector. Pick the exact Forge or Fabric build required by the pack. Do not select vanilla, Paper or Spigot for a client that expects Forge or Fabric.
- Install the pack from the catalogue when available. Use the modpack or CurseForge listing in the panel and choose the precise release number. Catalogue availability is narrower than the full universe of community packs.
- Match every client. Each player must install the same Minecraft version, loader version and modpack release. A client with one extra mod or a different dependency can be rejected during connection.
- Set conservative server properties. Start with a modest view distance, a small group of players and no unnecessary command-block or automation load. Save changes before starting.
- Start and wait through the queue. Free servers may wait for an available slot and display advertising. Keep the panel open long enough to see whether the process reaches “online” rather than assuming a delayed start is a crash.
- Test with one player first. Join, travel a short distance, open machines or quests included by the pack, and watch for disconnects. Add friends only after the server survives this basic test.
- Make backups before experimentation. Download or otherwise export the world when the panel permits it. A mod removal, version change or failed update can make a world unusable, and free hosting should not be your only copy.
When a catalogue pack is unavailable, manual installation is more fragile: you must obtain the server files, place the correct mods and dependencies in the expected folders, and keep client and server versions synchronized. If the panel does not expose the required loader or file controls, that pack is not a practical choice on that host.
Why a free modpack server crashes
It never reaches the online state
The most likely causes are an allocation below the pack’s startup requirement, a wrong loader version, or a missing dependency. Read the startup log for the first “out of memory,” mod-loading or version-mismatch message. If the pack needs more memory than the free tier can supply, switching between Forge and Fabric will not solve the limit; use a lighter release or another host.
It starts, then stops after playing
Community support threads warn that memory use can grow over time even when a pack initially works. New chunks, loaded machines, entities and dimensions increase the server’s workload. Reduce exploration and automation while testing, lower view distance, remove malfunctioning content only when the pack author documents that removal as safe, and restore a backup if the world becomes unstable. A repeated late-session crash is evidence that the free allocation is insufficient for the way the world is being used.

Players receive a mod-list or handshake error
Compare the server’s loader, Minecraft version, pack release and dependency list with every player’s installation. Do not fix a client mismatch by copying a random mod from a download site; use the pack’s documented files and versions. Server-only and client-only mods must be placed where the pack expects them.

Free services commonly stop an empty server to conserve resources. Reviews of Aternos cite a five-minute empty-server shutdown, but that figure is not confirmed by a current official terms page. Plan to restart the server before a session and never treat an empty-server stop as evidence that the world was deleted.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Queues, ads and player limits are part of the free price
Aternos is ad-supported and may place a server in a start queue. Review reports disagree about the wait: one gives roughly two to ten minutes at peak, while another reports waits of up to 30 minutes. Because those figures vary by demand and date, check the live queue indicator when your group is ready to play. A host claiming “no queue” should still be checked for an idle rule, daily runtime limit or automatic suspension.

- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Player caps are equally important. A review-based report puts Minehut’s free tier at 10 players, but Minehut does not provide the Forge or Fabric support required for a conventional modpack. For any candidate host, find the current cap in the control panel and test whether simultaneous players cause lag before planning a larger event.
When paid hosting is the sensible fallback
If the pack’s documented minimum is above the free allocation, if the server crashes as the world grows, or if your group cannot tolerate queues and automatic shutdowns, free hosting is the wrong tool. Aternos staff have directed users with heavy packs toward a different pack or a paid host. One reviewer’s broad estimate places suitable paid modpack hosting around $5–$12 per month, but that is an opinion rather than a current quote; treat it only as a budgeting reference and check the provider’s present price, RAM, backups and renewal terms.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Paying does not automatically fix a bad pack. Confirm that the plan supplies dedicated or clearly stated memory, permits the required Forge or Fabric version, includes backups, and lets you download the world. A smaller paid plan with transparent limits is safer than a “modpack” label with unspecified resources.
Checklist before committing your world
- What exact Minecraft version and loader does the pack require?
- How much RAM is assigned to the free tier today, and is that number guaranteed or promotional?
- Does the host support the pack directly, or only plugins?
- What are the current player cap, queue behavior and empty-server shutdown rule?
- Are ads, VPN restrictions, identity checks or a payment card required?
- Can you download an independent world backup?
- Does the service provide logs and a way to change software versions?
- What is your recovery plan if the pack starts but later runs out of memory?
For a small group experimenting with a lightweight pack, those answers can make a free server worthwhile. For a long-running Better Minecraft or All The Mods world, the RAM ceiling and reliability limits usually matter more than the zero-dollar price.
