How many players can a free TF2 server hold?
Plan around 8–12 simultaneous players for a typical free tier. The comparisons found for this topic show both a 4–12 range and an 8–12 range, while one provider advertises a maximum of 14. The disagreement is a warning that “free TF2 server” is not one standardized product. A host can also change its cap by region, demand, or plan revision.

That capacity is enough for a small group, a private practice session, or a low-population community. It is not enough to recreate a busy public server. Ask specifically whether the number refers to connected players only and whether spectators, SourceTV, or bots consume slots. If a panel offers a slider, the highest selectable value is not proof that the host will sustain that many players under every map and plugin combination.
Does a free server stay online?
Often, no. An idle policy is the most important difference between a free instance and a paid, continuously reserved server. A host may stop the process when nobody is connected, shut it down after a period of inactivity, or delete the instance after you leave. A stopped process can mean that the address disappears from the server browser and that players must wait for a manual or automatic restart.

Do not interpret a “24/7” label without reading its conditions. One free-tier advertisement claims continuous operation, while the broader pattern in hosting comparisons is automatic shutdown; the same advertised service also states that its free server stops and is deleted after you leave. Those claims conflict, so confirm the current terms, retention period, and restart behavior before moving a community onto the server. Uptime guarantees and DDoS protection are commonly reserved for paid tiers rather than free ones.
For an event, schedule a test session first. Leave the server empty for the period specified in the terms, then check whether the process, configuration, map, and plugins remain. A free server that sleeps between sessions may be perfectly adequate for occasional play, but it is unsuitable for a community that expects a permanent listing.
Are mods and SourceMod plugins allowed?
There is no universal answer. Some free offers include a selection of preinstalled mods and plugins; others prevent you from uploading custom binaries or editing the server filesystem. Even when file access exists, the control panel may not expose launch parameters or a compatible plugin loader.

- Whether files persist after an automatic stop, reset, or migration.
- Whether the provider will help diagnose crashes caused by third-party plugins.
If the answer to any of these is unclear, assume that you are limited to the stock server. That assumption prevents a common failure: designing a server around a plugin, only to discover that the free plan blocks the required files or restarts without them.
Credit-based free hosting: what to calculate
A credit model replaces a monthly bill with an activity requirement. One advertised example gives 15 credits for each hour spent on the provider’s site, up to 30 more from its mobile applications, plus a daily spin. It also advertises unlimited slots with RAM as the practical limit. Those figures are marketing claims and may be revised, so check the current earning rate and the number of credits consumed per server hour.
Calculate the balance before inviting players:
- Record the credits required to start and run the instance for one hour.
- Multiply that cost by your planned weekly play time.
- Subtract credits you can realistically earn, rather than the maximum promotional amount.
- Check what happens when the balance reaches zero: pause, deletion, or loss of the server files.
An “unlimited slot” claim does not remove hardware limits. RAM, CPU time, map complexity, and plugins still determine whether the server performs well. A large theoretical slot count is therefore less useful than a clearly stated resource allocation and a retention policy.
Free hosting versus paid hosting
Paid plans generally exchange a recurring fee for reserved resources, persistent storage, and support. Marketing pages for paid game-server plans commonly advertise no player-slot limit and a 99.9% uptime guarantee, but those promises apply to specific plans and terms, not to free tiers. A paid plan can still have CPU, memory, fair-use, or network restrictions.

The genuinely free option: self-host the dedicated server
Self-hosting has no hosting subscription, but it is not costless. You supply the computer, electricity, storage, network connection, public address or forwarding arrangement, security updates, and technical labor. Performance and uptime depend entirely on that equipment and connection.
Team Fortress 2’s dedicated server is distributed as Steam application 232250, separate from the game client application 440. Guides for the dedicated server state that you do not need to own the game to install the server application.
Linux installation with SteamCMD
Install the 32-bit libraries required by SteamCMD for your distribution, then download and start SteamCMD. The following command pattern installs or updates the server into a directory you choose:

One installation guide gives a 15–25 GB disk-space example; treat that as a planning estimate, not a guaranteed final size. Leave additional room for maps, logs, plugins, and backups.

Windows preparation
The Official TF2 Wiki guidance recommends using a separate Windows user account for game servers. Download and unzip steamcmd.zip into a dedicated directory such as C:steamcmd, then use SteamCMD to install application 232250 into a separate server directory. Keeping the service account and files separate from your everyday profile reduces accidental permission and configuration problems.
Configure the server
After installation, edit tf/cfg/server.cfg. At minimum, set a recognizable hostname and an RCON password. Use a strong, unique RCON password; anyone who obtains it can administer the server.
A private server can be tested with a direct connection on your local network. For a public server, create a Game Server Login Token for game ID 440 and pass it at startup with the +sv_setsteamaccount parameter:

Keep the token out of public screenshots, repositories, and shared chat.
Open the network path
Self-hosting requires the server’s game port to be allowed through the operating-system firewall and, when applicable, forwarded by the router to the server machine. The exact port and protocol settings depend on your chosen configuration; follow the current TF2 server documentation for those values. If players outside your network cannot connect, test in this order:
- Confirm that the server process is running and listening on the expected interface.
- Allow the process through the host firewall.
- Forward the configured game port from the router to the correct local address.
- Check whether your internet provider uses carrier-grade NAT, which can prevent inbound connections.
- Test from a different network, such as a mobile connection, rather than from inside the same LAN.
Publishing a server also exposes a network service. Keep the operating system and server files updated, use the least privilege necessary, and back up server.cfg, maps, and plugin configuration before making changes.
Common problems and practical fixes
The server vanished after everyone left
This is normally an idle or deletion policy, not a TF2 error. Read the free plan’s retention terms and confirm whether an empty instance is stopped, restarted on demand, or permanently removed. If deletion is automatic, keep your configuration and map files locally so you can recreate the instance.
Players cannot join an apparently running server
Check the firewall, router forwarding, public address, and Game Server Login Token. On a self-hosted installation, also verify that the server has been updated with app_update 232250 validate. On a hosted instance, confirm that the provider has finished starting the process rather than merely creating a control-panel entry.
A plugin or custom map is missing
Confirm that the plan allows uploads and the relevant plugin framework. If the host resets files at restart, store a copy and reapply it only through the supported deployment method. A provider that does not permit custom content cannot be made to support it through server.cfg alone.
The server runs out of resources
Reduce demanding plugins and map features, inspect logs, and compare memory use with the plan’s allocation. In a credit-based service, “unlimited slots” still means the available RAM and CPU set the practical ceiling. On a home server, monitor memory, CPU, disk space, and upload bandwidth during a full session.
A decision checklist before you invite players
- Write down the confirmed slot cap and whether spectators or bots count.
- Test the idle timeout and find out whether files survive a stop.
- Confirm SourceMod, map, sound, and extension permissions.
- Record the backup and restore process.
- For credit plans, calculate the hourly balance and what happens at zero credits.
- For self-hosting, verify storage, 32-bit libraries on Linux, firewall access, router forwarding, and a public Game Server Login Token for game ID 440.
- Run a private test with the exact plugins and maps you intend to use.
If your group can accept a small player cap and occasional startup delays, a free hosted tier can be a useful way to play. If you need a permanent public server, predictable capacity, or full control over plugins, either operate the dedicated server yourself or budget for a plan that explicitly provides those guarantees.
