You can call several useful REST APIs without creating an account or sending a key, but a trustworthy 30-plus directory cannot be confirmed from the available provider evidence. The practical approach is to start with a small set of documented candidates, then verify anonymous access, quotas, CORS, licensing and data freshness for the exact endpoint you plan to use. Open-Meteo, JSONPlaceholder, PokéAPI, selected GitHub operations and supported CoinGecko public requests illustrate the important differences between genuinely keyless APIs, free key-based plans and mock services.
What “zero-auth” means for a REST API
“Free” and “without an API key” describe different things. A zero-auth request reaches the specific endpoint without an API key, bearer token, account or checkout step. A provider can still require authentication for writes, private records, higher quotas or other parts of the same service.

Use these labels when evaluating a service:
| Label | What you send | What it does not promise |
|---|---|---|
| Keyless / zero-auth | No key or account for the documented endpoint | Universal anonymous access, unlimited traffic, commercial rights or an uptime guarantee |
| Free key-based tier | An account and generated key, even when no payment is required | That the service is zero-auth |
| Mock or sample API | Usually a public request with no credential | Live, accurate or production-grade records |
Authentication is therefore endpoint-specific. A public API landing page or a successful request to one route does not prove that every route is anonymous. Check the operation you will actually call and record the date of that check.
Which free APIs need no API key?
The following services are useful starting points, but they do not all carry the same status. The table states exactly what the current documentation supports rather than treating every public endpoint as universally keyless.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Service | Best fit | Current access picture | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Open-Meteo | Forecasts, historical weather and related weather data | The project documents no-key public access and browser CORS support. | Free public access is for non-commercial use. Data is CC BY 4.0 and requires attribution. The provider lists a separate commercial service, a 10,000-call-per-day public limit and no uptime guarantee for that free tier. |
| JSONPlaceholder | Learning HTTP methods, frontend state and request flows | The official site calls it a “free fake REST API,” intended for practice without a production data account. | Its records are mock data. Read the current guide before relying on a particular method or response behavior. |
| PokéAPI | Educational demos and themed data projects | Version 2 documentation describes Pokémon-related resources that are commonly used for public learning requests. | Confirm the current anonymous behavior, limits and endpoint names in the provider documentation before shipping an application. |
| GitHub REST API | Public repository and developer data | The live API root exposes endpoint templates, but anonymous availability varies by operation. | Authentication and rate limits can differ between routes. Treat a public root as a starting point, not proof that every endpoint is keyless. |
| CoinGecko public API | Crypto-data experiments on supported public requests | The provider advertises a keyless public path for supported requests. | The separate Demo plan generates a key, so it is not zero-auth. The provider also distinguishes free access from commercial data-use rights. |
These examples answer “Which free APIs need no API key?” only when the particular operation is documented as anonymous. A service may change limits, require a key for a new route or reserve commercial rights for a paid product.
How to verify an API before you build on it
Use this repeatable check for every candidate. It takes less time than replacing an API after launch.
- Start at the provider’s current documentation. Find the authentication section and the exact resource you need. Look for wording such as “no API key,” “public access” or an explicit credential requirement.
- Inspect the operation, not just the domain. Read the page for the specific GET, search or lookup route. Assume POST, PATCH, DELETE, private records and administrative operations need authentication unless the documentation says otherwise.
- Check whether an account is hidden in the setup. A “free” dashboard that asks you to register and generate a key is a free key-based tier, not zero-auth.
- Record quotas and rate-limit rules. Note calls per day or minute, burst limits, pagination rules, response-size limits and what happens after exhaustion. Open-Meteo’s public documentation, for example, describes 10,000 calls per day and no uptime guarantee for its free public tier.
- Confirm browser support. For a frontend application, check the endpoint’s CORS policy in the provider documentation and in a browser request. A service can work from a server while refusing cross-origin browser calls.
- Read licensing and attribution terms. Verify whether the data can be used commercially, whether redistribution is allowed and how credit must appear. Open-Meteo identifies non-commercial public access and CC BY 4.0 attribution requirements; those terms matter even though requests are free.
- Check data status and freshness. Determine whether responses are live, periodically updated, historical or deliberately fake. JSONPlaceholder is suitable for request-flow practice, not for reporting real-world facts.
- Save the date and version. API policies and quotas are volatile. Put the documentation date, endpoint version and any required credit in your project notes so a future maintainer can repeat the check.
Browser calls: CORS, caching and exposure
A keyless API is attractive for a small browser app because there is no secret to hide. It is not automatically safe or reliable. The browser still sends your traffic from every user’s device, so a public endpoint can be exhausted quickly when a page is popular.

- Confirm that the exact route returns an appropriate
Access-Control-Allow-Originresponse. Directory labels are discovery hints; the provider’s endpoint behavior is authoritative. - Cache responses that do not change frequently. Weather forecasts, for example, do not need a new request on every component render.
- Debounce search boxes and avoid firing a request for every keystroke.
- Handle HTTP errors, timeouts, empty records and malformed JSON in the client. A free endpoint can still be temporarily unavailable.
- Never move a private credential into frontend code. If a route requires a key, call it through a server-side component or choose a documented anonymous route instead.
When CORS is absent, a server-side proxy can solve the browser restriction, but it does not remove quota, licensing or commercial-use obligations. It also makes your server responsible for caching, abuse controls and monitoring.
Commercial use, attribution and uptime are separate decisions
“No credit card” describes billing friction, not permission to use the data in a paid product. Open-Meteo’s provider materials separate free public, non-commercial access from a commercial service and require credit for CC BY 4.0 data. CoinGecko likewise distinguishes keyless or free access from commercial data-use rights. Read those terms before embedding either source in advertising, a paid dashboard, a customer deliverable or a redistributed dataset.
Uptime is another independent question. Open-Meteo’s public pricing information states that its free tier has no uptime guarantee. A hobby project may tolerate an occasional outage; a customer-facing system may need a paid plan, a second data source, local caching or an explicit degraded mode.

Weather prototypes
Open-Meteo is the strongest documented fit in this set for forecast and historical-weather experiments. Its project documentation describes forecasts up to 16 days, an 80-year Historical Weather API and several related weather APIs. Use the documented no-key route for a non-commercial prototype, display the required attribution and design around the stated public quota.
Frontend and HTTP practice
JSONPlaceholder is intentionally fake. It lets you practice GET, POST, PUT, PATCH and DELETE-style flows, loading states and optimistic updates without claiming that the returned records represent real people or events. Keep it in tests, tutorials and demos rather than analytics or reporting.

Themed educational applications
PokéAPI’s version 2 documentation provides a focused resource model that is easy to explore in a classroom or hobby project. Its narrow subject makes it useful for pagination, detail pages, image handling and client-side routing. Confirm current limits and anonymous behavior before treating a demo as a public service.
Public developer information
GitHub’s REST API can expose public repository and developer data, but the authentication model is operation-specific. Verify the exact endpoint’s current documentation and rate-limit response. Do not infer anonymous access to private, write or higher-volume operations from the public API root.

Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| 401 or 403 response | The route requires authentication even though another route was public. | Read that endpoint’s authentication section; add the required credential on a server or select a documented anonymous operation. |
| Works in a script but fails in the browser | CORS is not enabled for the endpoint. | Use a server-side request, a permitted proxy or a provider route that documents browser access. |
| 429 or throttled responses | You exceeded a per-minute, daily or burst limit. | Cache, debounce, paginate carefully, implement backoff and inspect the provider’s quota rules. |
| Data looks realistic but is unsuitable for reporting | The service is mock or sample data. | Use JSONPlaceholder only for development and replace it with a licensed live source for real facts. |
| Legal or attribution concern | Free requests were mistaken for unrestricted data rights. | Read the current license, commercial-use policy and credit instructions; add attribution where required. |
| Unexpected outage | The free tier has no service-level commitment. | Cache the last successful response, show a stale-data notice and define a fallback or paid-service decision. |
Directories can broaden discovery, not prove eligibility
The free-public-apis directory classifies entries by authentication, HTTPS and CORS, but it is community-maintained. The cors.dev index reported that 70 services answered without a key or signup in an October 2026 check and listed Open-Meteo, PokéAPI, Rick and Morty API, JSONPlaceholder, DummyJSON, Frankfurter and Hacker News API among popular choices. That count is a useful shortlist, not a provider guarantee: an index check cannot establish commercial rights, long-term uptime, endpoint-specific authentication or current quotas.
Use a directory to discover names, then repeat the eight-point provider check above. If you publish a list of 30 or more services, verify every item individually and label the date of verification. Without that audit, a smaller, clearly qualified selection is more useful than a long list that quietly mixes anonymous routes, key-based plans and mock data.
A production-readiness checklist
- The exact endpoint is documented as anonymous, or its required key is securely handled.
- You know the quota, burst behavior, pagination and response-size limits.
- Browser CORS has been confirmed when calls originate in a web page.
- You have identified whether records are live, historical, periodically updated or mock.
- Commercial-use, redistribution and attribution terms are recorded.
- Timeout, retry, backoff, caching and stale-data behavior are implemented.
- You have a fallback plan for outages or quota exhaustion.
- The documentation date and API version are captured for future rechecks.
That checklist is the difference between “the request worked once” and a dependable integration. Zero-auth removes one setup step; it does not remove engineering, licensing or operational work.
