Free IT Asset Management Software for Enterprises in 2026: 4 Verified Options

A ten-product ranking is not supported by verified free-plan terms. Compare four documented options and their limits, deployment models, and enterprise trade-offs.

Four IT asset management products have documented free options in 2026: Snipe-IT and GLPI offer free software you can self-host, ManageEngine AssetExplorer has capped free editions, and Lansweeper offers a free tier capped at 100 assets. The available evidence does not support a reliable ten-product ranking, so this guide compares those four rather than padding the list with trials or unverified plans.

For a large enterprise, treat these offers as candidates for a limited inventory, lab, evaluation, or subsidiary—not as proof that the free tier can support your whole estate. Check the asset limit, deployment model, discovery needs, operational work, and controls your organization requires before choosing.

What counts as free IT asset management software?

“Free” can mean software with no license fee that your team runs, a perpetual edition limited by asset or node count, or an ongoing service tier with a hard cap. Those models are not interchangeable: self-hosting means your organization handles infrastructure, upgrades, backups, availability, and security; capped plans may stop fitting as inventory grows.

A time-limited trial is different from a free edition. ManageEngine’s cloud trial lasts 30 days and allows up to 250 IT assets; absent a paid license, it downgrades to the free edition. The 250-asset trial allowance is not the permanent free limit.

Counting units also vary. ManageEngine describes its caps in “nodes,” while Lansweeper uses “assets.” Confirm with each vendor what counts toward the limit for your environment rather than assuming the terms mean the same thing.

Four free IT asset management options to compare

Product Documented free option Key qualification Best fit to investigate
Snipe-IT Free, open-source self-hosted software. Hosting and support are separate offerings; the vendor page does not establish the total operating cost of self-hosting. Teams focused on asset custody and lifecycle records that can operate their own installation.
GLPI Free software package. Managed cloud, support, plugins, and GLPI Network offerings are separate from the free software. The pricing page lists GLPI Network Cloud at €19 per user per month, excluding tax; that is a paid hosted offer, not the free license. Organizations seeking self-managed flexibility and willing to distinguish community software from paid hosting and services.
ManageEngine AssetExplorer Never-expiring free edition: 25 nodes on-premises and 50 nodes in the cloud. The download page states 25 nodes; the product page lists 25 on-premises and 50 cloud. Cloud trial: 30 days and up to 250 IT assets before downgrade to the free edition. Paid plans are asset-based. Teams comparing cloud and on-premises deployment, lifecycle features, and the implications of a node cap.
Lansweeper Free continuation tier for up to 100 assets, with unlimited user seats and community support. The Enterprise plan is custom priced and starts at 10,000 assets, according to the plans page. Teams that prioritize discovery and inventory and can work within the free tier’s asset cap.

How to assess enterprise fit

Start with the inventory you need to manage

Estimate the devices and other configuration items you need to track, then confirm how the product counts them. A cap of 25, 50, or 100 may be useful for an evaluation or bounded environment, but it can rule out a full-estate deployment. Do not infer capacity from unlimited user seats: Lansweeper’s unlimited-seat claim does not remove its 100-asset free limit.

Match the tool to your inventory workflow

Manual asset custody and lifecycle records are different requirements from automated network discovery. Determine whether you need discovery, barcode or QR scanning, software-license compliance, contracts, procurement, a CMDB, or service-desk workflows. A product that stores asset records should not automatically be treated as equivalent to a platform covering all of those functions.

If physical assets are identified with barcode or QR workflows, labels may be needed. Check label material, adhesive, dimensions, and printer compatibility before buying supplies.

Account for deployment and operational responsibilities

Free self-hosted software avoids a software-license charge, not the work of operating the service. Plan for hosting, upgrades, backups, availability, and security. Compare that responsibility with a paid managed-hosting option where available; the cited vendor pages do not quantify the total cost of running a self-hosted installation.

Verify controls and support before rollout

Enterprise suitability depends on more than a free label or an enterprise product name. Validate role-based access, audit and security requirements, integrations, discovery depth, data location, support response commitments, and the upgrade and backup model against your own requirements. The listed free-plan information alone does not establish that any product meets a particular organization’s controls.

Which option should you evaluate first?

  • Choose Snipe-IT for evaluation if your priority is asset custody and lifecycle tracking and you can maintain a self-hosted system.
  • Evaluate GLPI if you want free software with a self-managed path, while separately assessing whether paid hosting, plugins, or support are needed.
  • Test AssetExplorer if its cloud/on-premises choice and lifecycle capabilities suit your workflow, and your inventory fits its free node cap.
  • Consider Lansweeper if discovery and inventory are central and the documented 100-asset tier is sufficient for the intended scope.

These are comparison starting points, not a universal ranking. Choose based on the actual inventory, deployment model, controls, and support your organization needs.

Why this is a four-product shortlist, not a ten-product ranking

The documented offers here establish four options, not ten. Adding products without verified current free terms would risk presenting a trial as permanent, an incidental asset feature as full ITAM, or an outdated plan as available. Freshservice documentation, for example, describes ITAM availability for new signups beginning March 31, 2026 and compares paid Growth, Pro, and Enterprise capabilities; it does not establish a free ITAM offer, so it is not listed as a free option.
