Yes—Microsoft supports using a PowerPoint file both as an agent’s knowledge source and as input for creating presentation content. The distinction is the workflow: adding a deck to an agent provides reusable grounding, while asking PowerPoint Copilot to reference a file helps draft or expand a presentation. These are documented Microsoft capabilities, not a universal rule for every AI tool.
How can the same presentation serve both purposes?
A slide deck can contain information an AI agent draws on when answering questions, and it can also be a source file that PowerPoint Copilot uses while drafting slides. The file may be the same, but the two workflows do different jobs.

An agent knowledge source is set up for the agent to use as grounding; it is not the same as attaching a file in a single chat. Copilot Studio describes knowledge as content made available to the agent at design time and shared as grounding for its users. A one-conversation attachment, by contrast, is provided for that interaction.

For a reusable source, add the deck to the agent’s knowledge or connect the relevant SharePoint or OneDrive location. Check that it appears in the agent’s Knowledge section and is ready before testing the agent. Newly added SharePoint or OneDrive content can take several minutes to become available; a source still preparing is not yet used in responses. Draft a slide from a file
Copilot in PowerPoint can draft a slide from a referenced file. Choose the file-reference option in Copilot, select the source, and tell Copilot which section or topic should inform the slide. Add topics to an existing presentation
Copilot can also reference files when adding topics to an existing presentation. The support page describes a workflow that can use up to five files for specified formats, but some file types or capabilities are marked preview, and Microsoft says support for certain types is rolling out. Limits are specific to the product and workflow; do not assume that a format accepted in one Copilot feature is accepted in another.

Knowledge sources can expose information through agent responses. Microsoft warns that people with access to an agent may receive answers grounded in embedded-file content. Review who can use the agent and whether the deck is appropriate for that audience.

- Confirm the file’s permissions and sensitivity settings.
- Check whether sensitivity labels, encryption, password protection, or extract-right rules affect source usability or user access.
- After the source is ready, test with a question whose answer is in the deck and verify that the response is grounded as expected.
