If Meet links keep creating extra windows—especially when you use more than one Google account—Google’s built-in Meet app flow and Dock offer different approaches. Google documents how to install and open the Meet progressive web app (PWA), but does not promise that every link from another app will reuse one existing window. Dock’s Chrome Web Store listing says it can route supported links to an existing PWA window and the matching account; those are the extension’s claims, not independently tested results.
Why Meet links may open another window
Installing the Meet PWA gives you an app-like way to use Meet in Chrome. It does not, by itself, guarantee that a link clicked in email, chat, or another app will open in the Meet window you already have. Google’s instructions cover installing and opening the PWA, not universal routing of external links.

On macOS, there is also a version-specific Chromium issue report about external links opening a new normal browser window when the profile’s last-active window is an app-type window, even though a regular tabbed window is open. The report discusses Chrome versions 150 and 151 and a behavior change associated with M146. It is a report about a particular case, not proof that this explains every extra Meet window or that a fix has shipped for all users. See the Chromium issue tracker.

Install the Meet PWA
- Open meet.google.com in Chrome. Chrome must be open during installation.
- Use the install control in Chrome’s address bar.
- Find Meet in your app dock and open it from there.
Google’s help page lists Chrome 73 or later as a requirement and supports the Meet PWA on macOS. These steps establish the app, but do not ensure that future external links will target one existing window. Google’s instructions for installing and using the Meet PWA.

Open a meeting from its browser green room
If a meeting is already open in Chrome, Google documents selecting the Open app control from the meeting’s green room. This is a manual way to move into the app; it is not a setting for automatically routing every later link from another application.
Use Dock for automatic matching-link routing
Dock is a Chrome extension intended for people who use work apps through PWAs and have multiple accounts or windows. Its Chrome Web Store listing says it routes supported links to an existing PWA window, or opens the installed PWA if no matching window is open. The listing also says account information in a link or a saved mapping can help choose the right account window. Check Dock’s Chrome Web Store listing for its current supported links, permissions, and availability before installing.

These capabilities are described by the extension’s listing; they have not been independently tested here. The listing says Dock makes no network requests and stores rules, account colors, and open-window information in Chrome storage. That is the listing’s privacy description, not an independent code or traffic audit.

Check which browser handles links on macOS
If clicking a Meet link launches an unexpected browser, check macOS’s default-browser choice in Settings. Apple documents how to select a default browser, but that choice only helps determine which browser receives external links; it does not promise that Chrome will route them into a particular existing Meet window. When a script is worth considering
A community Gist describes an advanced AppleScript and shell-command approach that launches Chrome with a Meet app ID and profile argument. It may appeal if you are comfortable reviewing and maintaining scripts, but it is not official, and the cited guidance does not establish broad compatibility or a guaranteed fix. For a routine setup, start with Google’s PWA flow; if you specifically need automatic routing among accounts and existing app windows, Dock’s listing describes that use case.
