Free Bootstrap Progress Bars: Markup, Styles, and Accessibility

Use Bootstrap v5.3’s wrapper-based ARIA markup to build a progress bar, style its fill, add segments, and communicate updates accessibly.

For a Bootstrap progress bar, use the v5.3 structure: put the progressbar role, accessible name, and ARIA values on the outer .progress element, then set the visual fill on its inner .progress-bar. The title’s “V11” is not verified by the official documentation cited here; the examples below are for Bootstrap v5.3.

How to make a Bootstrap progress bar

Start with a named wrapper and a value within its stated range. The wrapper carries the accessibility information; the child controls the visible fill.

<div class="progress" role="progressbar" aria-label="Upload progress"
     aria-valuenow="25" aria-valuemin="0" aria-valuemax="100">
  <div class="progress-bar" style="width: 25%"></div>
</div>

This example displays a quarter-width fill and reports a current value of 25 on a 0–100 scale. Bootstrap’s documentation requires a progressbar role, an accessible name—such as aria-label or aria-labelledby—and the relevant ARIA value attributes on the wrapper. See Bootstrap’s v5.3 progress component documentation.

Keep the reported value and visual width in sync

When the value changes, update both aria-valuenow and the child’s width so the information conveyed to assistive technology agrees with the visual bar. You can set the width with an inline style, a Bootstrap width utility, or custom CSS.

Why the v5.3 markup places ARIA on the wrapper

In Bootstrap v5.3, the role="progressbar" and ARIA attributes belong on the outer .progress element. The inner .progress-bar is for visual presentation and an optional label. Bootstrap’s migration guide says the earlier placement continues to work as before, but recommends the updated structure for improved screen-reader compatibility. The change followed reports that some screen readers did not announce zero-value bars with the old arrangement; it is not a guarantee of identical behavior across every browser and assistive-technology combination. Read Bootstrap’s v5.3 migration notes.

Choose a bar style and label placement

Bootstrap’s examples support different heights, widths, labels, contextual background colors, stripes, animated stripes, and multiple segments. Choose the treatment that communicates the task clearly, not just the one that looks most decorative.

  • Solid or contextual color: Use a straightforward fill for a single value, or a contextual background to distinguish a state. Do not rely on color alone to convey meaning; include text or another accessible cue and maintain sufficient contrast.
  • Stripes or animation: These change the visual treatment, not the meaning of the value. Keep the accessible name and value information accurate.
  • Label inside the bar: Put a percentage or short label inside .progress-bar only if it remains legible at the current fill width.
  • Label outside the bar: Place the text outside when it could be clipped, overlap the fill, or cross a background with inadequate contrast.

Bootstrap’s component examples show these visual options and label patterns in its progress documentation.

Build a segmented or stacked progress bar

Use .progress-stacked when one bar needs to show multiple adjacent segments. Set widths on the individual .progress elements inside the stacked container; each segment’s child .progress-bar supplies its visible fill.

<div class="progress-stacked">
  <div class="progress" role="progressbar" aria-label="Completed" aria-valuenow="30" aria-valuemin="0" aria-valuemax="100" style="width: 30%">
    <div class="progress-bar"></div>
  </div>
  <div class="progress" role="progressbar" aria-label="In progress" aria-valuenow="20" aria-valuemin="0" aria-valuemax="100" style="width: 20%">
    <div class="progress-bar bg-info"></div>
  </div>
</div>

In this illustrative example, the segments occupy 30% and 20% of the stacked bar. Give each segment a useful accessible name and ensure its value attributes describe the value that segment represents. For Bootstrap’s stacked-bar pattern, see the official examples.

Handle indeterminate progress and updates accessibly

When the value is unknown

If progress is indeterminate or the current value is not known, omit aria-valuenow rather than reporting a made-up percentage. The W3C guidance on range widget values and limits explains how to represent value information.

When a task is progressing over time

Changing aria-valuenow does not, by itself, guarantee that assistive technology will announce each update: a progressbar is not a live region. If users need to hear task-status changes, provide a separate status announcement and update its text as the task progresses. The W3C’s ARIA25 technique demonstrates updating text in a visually hidden live region as the bar changes.
