The best free AI coding option depends on how you want to work: OpenRouter gives you a changing menu of hosted free-model routes, Ollama can run models on your own computer, and GitHub Copilot Free puts an assistant inside supported coding tools with a published monthly allowance. None is simply “unlimited free AI”: each has different trade-offs in model choice, usage limits, and where code is processed.
How the free options differ
| Option | Where it runs | What the free offer means | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenRouter | Hosted model providers accessed through a common gateway | A changing collection of models with zero prompt pricing listed for displayed free models | Model availability and rate limits can vary; popularity is not a quality measure. |
| Ollama local | Your own computer | Ollama says local use is unlimited in service charges | Your computer’s resources and the model you choose determine what runs well. |
| Ollama cloud | Ollama’s hosted service | The free plan includes starter usage for a smaller set of cloud models | The pricing page lists a monthly reset from signup and one concurrent request. |
| GitHub Copilot Free | Hosted, within supported coding tools | GitHub lists a $0 plan with 2,000 completions per month and selected features | Free users get model selection automatically rather than choosing a model directly. |
These options represent three distinct workflows: sending requests through a model gateway, running a model locally, or using an integrated coding assistant. There is no controlled comparison here of their coding quality, speed, privacy outcomes, or task completion, so a universal “best” would be misleading.

OpenRouter: choose among hosted free-model routes
OpenRouter is a gateway to hosted model providers, not a local model runner or a full coding assistant by itself. Its free-model collection lists models with zero prompt pricing and describes openrouter/free as routing each request to a free model that fits.
What to expect from its free catalog
The collection changes over time, so treat the displayed choices and their limits as current listings rather than a permanent menu. OpenRouter’s October 2026 ranking is based on total tokens processed on the service during the preceding seven days. That indicates usage on OpenRouter, not coding ability or a recommendation of which model will perform best for your project.

Limits to plan around
OpenRouter Support warns that many free models have low rate limits and may not suit production use. A free route can be useful for trying models or occasional tasks, but do not assume it will be consistently available or support sustained, time-sensitive coding work. Check the current collection and terms when choosing a route.
Ollama: run a model locally or use its hosted cloud plan
Ollama offers two materially different ways to use models. Its quickstart covers local and cloud choices, including use with desktop apps and coding agents. Local execution keeps inference on your computer; Ollama cloud sends work to a hosted service.
Local Ollama
Ollama’s pricing page lists local use on your own hardware as unlimited. This means Ollama does not meter local runs as a service charge; it does not mean unlimited memory, speed, or computing capacity. The computer and selected model affect whether a particular coding workflow is practical. The cited sources do not establish a minimum specification or recommend a specific computer.

Ollama cloud
The same pricing page lists its Free plan at $0, with starter credits for a smaller set of cloud models. It lists one concurrent request and says free cloud usage resets monthly from signup. Those are hosted-plan limits, distinct from local use; check the current terms for changes.
Paid-plan context
Ollama’s August 31, 2026 pricing announcement describes transparent per-token pricing for its Pro, Max, and Team plans and names Claude Code and Codex among coding-agent integrations. That announcement is context for paid plans, not evidence that those plans are free or that Ollama outperforms another coding option.

GitHub’s plans page lists Copilot Free at $0, with 2,000 completions per month, Copilot CLI, community support, and access to selected models. The 2,000 figure is a vendor-published plan allowance, not a measure of how many tasks the assistant will complete or how productive a user will be.

Unlike choosing a route through OpenRouter, Copilot is an assistant integrated into supported coding tools. GitHub’s supported-model documentation says Copilot Free and Student users access models through automatic model selection only. If directly selecting a particular model is central to your workflow, that distinction matters.
Which option fits your coding workflow?
- Choose OpenRouter if you want to explore a changing selection of hosted free models through one gateway and can work within variable availability and rate limits.
- Choose Ollama local if you want to run models on hardware you control and are prepared to match model choice to that computer’s capabilities.
- Consider Ollama cloud if you prefer hosted inference through Ollama and its starter usage, monthly reset, and concurrency limit fit your needs.
- Choose Copilot Free if you want an integrated assistant workflow and the published monthly completions allowance and automatic model selection suit you.
For any option, check the current vendor page before relying on a specific free allowance or model: catalogs, plan terms, and limits can change.
