The only reliably permanent way to run a free 7 Days to Die server is to self-host the official Dedicated Server tool on a PC or spare machine you control. The software costs nothing; you provide the electricity, internet connection, storage, maintenance and network access. “Free” third-party hosts are usually promotional: AxentHost uses an in-site credit system, Squadnox advertises ad-funded private servers, and other offers are time-limited trials. If you need hands-off 24/7 availability, a low-cost rented server is more predictable than a free tier.

- Self-hosting: You run the official Steam dedicated-server tool on your own Windows or Linux machine. There is no hosting invoice, but electricity, broadband and hardware are your responsibility.
- Promotional hosting: A provider supplies a server at no cash price under conditions such as earning credits, viewing advertisements or accepting resource limits. These programs can change or disappear.
- Trials: A provider gives temporary access, sometimes for 30 days with a credit card or account verification. A trial is not permanent free hosting.
The dedicated-server application is a separate Steam tool (App ID 294420), with Windows and Linux depots, associated with the game app (App ID 251570). SteamDB recorded a peak of 1,068 concurrent users for the tool on 4 February 2024; that figure describes the tool, not the total player population or a guarantee for any individual server.

Prices and free-tier rules are volatile. The $1.99-per-GB and $10–$15 figures come from vendor or hosting-guide pages, not an independent market survey, so verify the current plan, renewal price, storage policy and slot definition before paying.

Self-host the free dedicated server
Self-hosting is the best choice when “free forever” matters more than convenience. Use a machine that can remain powered on, has adequate memory and CPU headroom, and is connected by a stable broadband line. A spare desktop is often better than the computer you use for playing, because the dedicated process competes with the game for resources.
Prepare the machine and network
- Choose Windows or Linux. The Steam tool provides depots for both.
- Use wired Ethernet where possible. Wi-Fi interruptions can look like server crashes to players.
- Give the machine a reserved local IP address in your router so port-forwarding rules do not break after a reboot.
- Allow the server executable through the operating system firewall, and keep the operating system and runtime libraries patched.
- Decide whether the server will run continuously. A sleeping or powered-off host is indistinguishable from an unavailable server.
Install with SteamCMD
Community setup guides use SteamCMD, Valve’s command-line Steam client. The following sequence installs the latest stable build into a directory you choose:

- Install SteamCMD for your operating system and create an empty server folder.
- Open a terminal in the SteamCMD directory.
- Log in anonymously with
login anonymous. - Select the server folder with
force_install_dir <path-to-your-server-folder>. Replace the angle-bracket text with a real path; do not include the brackets. - Download or update the dedicated server with
app_update 294420. - Exit SteamCMD with
quit, or leave it open while you test the installation.
Use a separate data directory for worlds and backups if your layout permits it. That makes reinstalling the executable less likely to overwrite your saves.
Configure the world
Open the installed serverconfig.xml in a plain-text editor. Set the server name, world or game name, password, player limit, difficulty, blood-moon settings, map-generation options and any other values exposed by the current file. Keep a clean copy of the original file so you can compare new options after an update.

Do not paste configuration values from an old version blindly. The game can add, rename or remove settings, and an invalid XML edit can prevent startup. Change one group of settings at a time, save the file as UTF-8, then read the console output after launching.
Start and test the server
On Windows, community guides commonly launch the service with startdedicated.bat. Run it once locally before opening the server to the internet. Wait for the console to report that the world is loaded, then connect using the local address from a second device on the same network. This isolates configuration problems from router and firewall problems.
Linux launch commands vary with the distribution and the wrapper you use, so keep the terminal output and service logs. A system service or scheduled task can restart the process after a reboot, but configure restart limits so a broken configuration does not create an endless crash loop.
Ports and remote administration
Port numbers have changed between guides and builds, so treat forwarding as a starting point rather than an immutable specification. One guide lists TCP 26900 and UDP 26900–26902 for external access; another host guide lists 26900–26903 and notes the Microsoft Visual C++ 2022 redistributable on Windows. Check the current server configuration and release notes, then forward only the ports the running build actually binds.

Never expose an administration interface with a default password. Prefer a VPN or a firewall allow-list over publishing an admin port to the entire internet. Test from a phone hotspot or another external connection; a local test can succeed even when your router is not forwarding correctly.
Keeping builds and players in sync
All players must use a game version compatible with the server. SteamCMD normally retrieves the latest stable release with app_update 294420. Some community guides describe a -beta flag for selecting a particular branch, but the exact branch name and behavior are version-dependent. A forum report also describes SteamCMD continuing to fetch an older build until an experimental branch was selected. Treat both reports as troubleshooting leads, not permanent commands: confirm the branch name in Steam and check the build identifier in the server log.
The V3.0 “Dead Hot Summer” update was reported by a review site as reaching stable status on 29 June 2026. That date is not an official confirmation, so verify the current stable or experimental channel in Steam before updating a live world. Back up the world before every branch change, and do not let the server update automatically while players are online.
Performance, capacity and practical limits
7 Days to Die is demanding on the server because the world state is held in memory and blood-moon hordes are CPU-bound. More players, larger view distances, dense bases, vehicles, entities and simultaneous block changes increase load. A free host that gives you a tiny CPU share or memory cap can lag even when its advertised slot count looks adequate.

- Monitor memory use, CPU time and tick or frame delay in the server console.
- Start with a conservative player limit and raise it only after a blood moon test.
- Schedule restarts during quiet periods if long uptimes cause memory growth.
- Keep world-generation and backup work off the busiest play window.
- Use a separate backup disk or remote copy; a single local save is not a backup.
Self-hosting does not automatically mean low latency. Upload bandwidth, bufferbloat, carrier-grade NAT and a changing public IP can matter more than download speed. If your internet provider blocks inbound connections or places you behind carrier-grade NAT, ordinary port forwarding may not work; a hosted server or a VPN-based network can be easier.

Credit-based access
AxentHost advertises a free server earned through in-site credits. The cash price can be zero while your practical cost is time spent earning credits and complying with the program. Confirm how many credits are consumed per hour, whether credits expire, what happens when the balance reaches zero, and whether you can download your world before termination. One review site cited only 34 reviews, so that figure should not be treated as proof of reliability or uptime.

Ad-funded access
Squadnox advertises ad-funded free private servers. Ask whether advertisements affect the control panel, player experience or server start time, and whether the free plan includes persistent storage, scheduled backups, mods and a public IP. Promotional availability can change without notice.
Trials and “free for 30 days” offers
A trial that includes a credit or lasts 30 days is useful for testing a mod pack or playing a short event, but plan the end date. Export the world, configuration and permission files before the trial expires. Check whether cancellation is automatic, whether the card is charged at renewal and whether the provider deletes data immediately.
When a cheap paid server is the better answer
Paying is rational when the server must stay online while your home PC is off, when you cannot forward ports, or when you need predictable backups and support. Hosting pages cite approximately $10–$15 per month for 8–10 slots, while some vendor pages advertise about $1.99 per GB with unmetered NVMe storage. These are illustrative vendor figures, not a universal price list. Compare CPU allocation, memory, backup frequency, DDoS protection, mod support, location, renewal pricing and data-export rules—not just the headline slot count.
Troubleshooting common failures
Players cannot see or join the server
- Confirm the server reached a fully loaded state rather than stopping at an XML or asset error.
- Check that the firewall allows the executable on the selected network profile.
- Verify the router forwards the correct protocols and ports to the reserved local IP.
- Test whether your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT; if it does, ordinary forwarding may be impossible.
- Have an external player test the public address, not the private 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x address.
The server and client report different versions
Stop the server, back up the world, run the stable app_update 294420 command again, and compare the installed build with the player’s Steam branch. If you intentionally use an experimental branch, every player must select the matching branch. Remove an obsolete -beta argument rather than guessing a new branch name.
The server crashes during a blood moon
Inspect CPU and memory usage, reduce the player cap or entity-heavy settings, and test with a fresh copy of the world. If the fresh world is stable, restore the backup and identify the mod, structure or entity load that triggers the failure. A free host may simply be enforcing a resource limit; ask for the exact CPU and memory allocation before migrating the world.
Which option should you choose?
- Choose self-hosting if you have a spare always-on machine, can forward ports, and want complete control with no recurring provider bill.
- Choose a promotional free host only if you accept changing terms, possible advertisements or credit requirements, and you maintain your own downloadable backups.
- Choose a trial for a temporary event or evaluation, with a calendar reminder and a migration plan.
- Choose paid hosting when uptime, external accessibility, support and predictable resources matter more than eliminating a monthly charge.
Before inviting a group, perform a complete test: connect from outside your home network, run a backup and restore, restart the machine, update the server on a copy of the world, and confirm that every player can join the selected branch. That test reveals whether “free” is genuinely usable for your group rather than merely free to create.
