You do not need to buy server software, install BeamNG.drive on the host, or use a graphics card. The trade-off is that your computer, network connection and electricity become the infrastructure.
Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted BeamNG.drive servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
Self-hosting works well for a few friends and occasional sessions. A server that must be available around the clock, support a larger public community or stay isolated from your gaming PC is usually worth moving to a paid virtual private server (VPS) or managed host. The right choice depends more on uptime and player count than on the software fee.

What “free BeamNG server hosting” actually is
BeamNG.drive does not provide an official dedicated multiplayer server in the material available for this guide. Multiplayer servers are run through BeamMP, a third-party multiplayer modification and its standalone BeamMP Server. The server program is separate from the game client: the host machine can run the server without BeamNG.drive installed and without a GPU.
That distinction matters when comparing hosting offers. A “free BeamNG server” generally means one of two things:

This article focuses on self-hosting because it is the dependable no-subscription option documented for BeamMP. You still pay indirectly through power consumption, your internet service, hardware wear and the time required to configure and maintain the server.
For current installation notes and supported builds, use the BeamMP documentation and check the project’s release information before downloading. The latest stable version identified for this article is v3.9.3, released May 23, 2026; v3.9.4 was identified as a pre-release in a 2026 setup guide, so treat version status as changeable.

Is free self-hosting worth it?
| Option | Cost position | Uptime | Player and hardware considerations | Network work |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Home PC | No server-software fee; electricity and internet are yours | Only while the computer and server are running | Shares CPU, RAM and upload capacity with your game or other workloads | Router port forwarding and firewall rules are required |
| Dedicated home machine | No server-software fee; additional hardware and power may be needed | Can run continuously if the machine and connection stay online | Separates server load from the gaming PC; single-thread CPU speed still matters | Same home-router and firewall configuration |
| VPS | Paid recurring service; exact prices depend on provider and region | Designed for 24/7 operation | Dedicated allocation avoids competing with your game client, but plan limits apply | Configure the VPS firewall and BeamMP port; no home-router forwarding |
| Managed server | Paid recurring service; prices and features vary | Usually intended for continuous availability | Provider handles some maintenance; capacity depends on the plan | Provider exposes the service port, while you manage server settings |
Choose home hosting when the group is small, sessions are scheduled and everyone can tolerate occasional downtime. Choose a VPS or managed plan when people expect to join at any hour, when the host’s gaming computer cannot remain on, or when public traffic makes home-network exposure undesirable. “Free” is therefore a good fit for a private gathering, not automatically the cheapest way to operate a permanent public server.

BeamMP server requirements
Officially stated baseline
BeamMP’s FAQ lists approximately 50+ MiB of usable RAM beyond operating-system overhead, a CPU faster than 1 GHz (multicore is preferred), Windows or Linux, roughly 10 MiB of disk space before mods and plugins, and about 5–10 Mb/s of upload bandwidth. The server does not need a GPU. The BeamMP project README gives a broader 30–100 MiB usable-RAM estimate and notes that these figures are guesses that can change between releases.
Those are launch-level requirements, not a guarantee of smooth public play. The physics state is synchronized among players, and the server’s CPU work is sensitive to single-thread performance. A modern, fast core can be more valuable than a large number of slower cores. RAM and upload demand also rise with player count, vehicles, maps, mods and plugins.
Practical estimates for small groups
A third-party setup guide gives these non-official working estimates:

| Concurrent players | Free RAM estimate | Upload guidance |
|---|---|---|
| 4 | About 2 GB | At least 5 Mbps per group of four players |
| 8 | About 4 GB | At least 10 Mbps using the same per-four-player rule |
| 16 | About 8 GB | At least 20 Mbps using the same per-four-player rule |
These values are planning estimates, not BeamMP guarantees. Leave headroom for Windows or Linux, other services, map and vehicle files, and temporary spikes. A server that technically starts with minimal memory can still stutter when the host is also running BeamNG.drive.
Player-count expectations
Another third-party guide places practical stability around 30 or more players as a point where physics synchronization can become unstable. That is not a hard limit: map complexity, mod behavior, CPU speed and network conditions all matter. Treat 30 players as a warning to benchmark carefully rather than a promised capacity.
How to host a BeamMP server at home
- Pick a supported host operating system. Use a Windows x86_64 build or one of the supported Debian/Ubuntu builds. A separate machine is preferable for an always-on server, but a gaming PC can host short sessions.
- Download the BeamMP Server package. Use the current stable release listed by BeamMP. For this article, v3.9.3 is the identified stable release from May 23, 2026. Keep the downloaded files in a dedicated folder so logs, mods and configuration remain together.
- Start the server once. Launch the server executable according to the package instructions. The first run creates or reveals the configuration and data locations you must edit. Stop it cleanly before changing settings.
- Set the listening port. BeamMP’s default is 30814. The port must be reachable over both TCP and UDP. If you choose another port, use that same value consistently in the server configuration, firewall and router.
- Configure privacy and listing. A private server can be kept out of public listings. For a public listing, set
Private = false(using the exact capitalization and syntax shown in your configuration) and provide a valid BeamMP AuthKey. The listing backend must be reachable; a setup guide warns that the server may refuse to start without a valid key. - Allow the server through the host firewall. Create inbound rules for the selected port on both TCP and UDP. Apply the rule only to the server executable or required port, rather than disabling the firewall entirely.
- Forward the port on your router. In the router’s port-forwarding or NAT section, send TCP 30814 and UDP 30814 to the host computer’s local IP address. Give that computer a DHCP reservation or static local address so the rule does not break after a reboot.
- Launch and test locally. Start the server and watch its console or log for startup errors. Join from the same network first if possible, then ask a friend outside your home network to connect. A local test can prove the process works but cannot confirm that internet traffic reaches your router.
- Keep the machine available. Disable sleep and hibernation for an always-on server, keep the server process running, and apply operating-system updates during a planned maintenance window. A home server is unavailable whenever the computer, router or internet connection is offline.
Networking details that decide whether friends can connect
TCP and UDP must both work
Forwarding only one protocol is a common failure. BeamMP expects the default port 30814 on TCP and UDP. Configure both protocols in the router and the host firewall, and check that the router forwards to the correct local address.

Public listing versus direct connection
Public discovery requires more than an open port. The server needs a valid AuthKey, Private = false and successful communication with BeamMP’s backend. If any of those conditions fails, the server may not appear in listings even though the process is running. A private server avoids public listing but still requires players to use the connection method configured for your group.

If port forwarding is correct but outside players cannot connect, your ISP may place the home connection behind carrier-grade NAT, or the router may have a double-NAT arrangement. In that situation, an inbound rule on your own router is not sufficient. Ask the ISP whether you have a publicly reachable address, obtain a routable connection where available, or move the server to a VPS.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Performance: what actually limits a BeamMP server?
CPU single-thread speed
BeamMP synchronizes vehicle physics across connected players. That makes fast single-thread execution important, especially as the session grows. More cores can help the operating system and other services, but adding cores does not automatically solve a slow physics thread.
Best Value
Memory and mod load
The official baseline is tiny because it describes the server process in isolation. Maps, vehicles, plugins, logs and the operating system consume the rest. Use the practical estimates as a starting point, monitor memory during a full session and leave unused capacity so the host does not begin swapping.
Upload bandwidth and latency
Upload is the home host’s constraint because state must travel to every player. The official guidance is roughly 5–10 Mb/s, while the third-party rule of at least 5 Mbps per four players is a more conservative planning figure. Measure sustained upload under load, not only the headline speed in your internet plan. Latency spikes and packet loss can feel like physics problems even when CPU usage is low.

Sharing the machine with BeamNG.drive
Running the game and server on one PC is convenient but creates contention for CPU time, RAM, disk access and upstream bandwidth. Cap unnecessary background uploads, close heavy applications and reduce the player count if the server becomes unstable. A second low-power computer can provide better isolation than upgrading the gaming PC solely for hosting.
Troubleshooting checklist
- The server will not start: confirm the downloaded build matches Windows x86_64 or a supported Debian/Ubuntu system; check the log for a malformed setting; and verify that the AuthKey is valid if the configuration is public.
- The server starts but is not listed: check that
Private = false, the AuthKey is present, outbound backend communication is allowed and the process is listening on the expected port. - Friends cannot join from outside: verify both TCP and UDP forwarding, the host firewall, the destination computer’s local IP and whether the ISP uses carrier-grade NAT or double NAT.
- Players report desync or rubber-banding: watch the host’s single-core CPU load, upload utilization, latency and packet loss; remove demanding mods; lower the player count; and test again with a simple map.
- The host freezes or disconnects: check available RAM, prevent sleep, inspect overheating or power-management settings and avoid running large downloads or cloud-sync jobs during play.
- Capacity is uncertain: add players gradually and record CPU, memory and upload usage. Do not treat the 30-player practical warning or any RAM estimate as a guarantee for every map and mod set.
When paying for hosting becomes sensible
A paid VPS or managed service earns its cost when availability matters more than eliminating the monthly bill. It keeps the server online while your personal computer is off, separates server load from the game client and avoids exposing your home router as the public endpoint. You still need to configure the BeamMP port and firewall on a VPS, but router forwarding is no longer part of the setup.
Self-hosting remains the better value for a private group that plays at agreed times, has a suitable upload connection and can accept that the host controls the schedule. Start free, monitor the real workload and migrate when downtime, maintenance or player growth becomes the problem—not simply because a hosting provider advertises a larger specification.
